The trope only works if Rei isn't already aware of the ACTUAL timer/countdown, which... isn't he if he's the one that leaked it? Knowing the mechanics of it or that it is time-sensitive seems 101-level strategy if he's TRULY working behind the scenes while supposedly knowing about everything.

If AA can come and take his eye off the ball, that is still egg on his (Rei's) face.

From what I got, he knew about the escape plan and destination, not the exact timer. If Baam escaped in secret afterall he would have violated the agreement, so he had no reason to know the exact moment when Baam would have taken the portal to stop him. Baam only chance to become free was to make a new bet and win, but they lost.

Traum beat AA at chess match but AA win the game because the requirement for Traum to win the game is for Traum to win the chess match before the gate close instead of win the chess match before 5 minutes (AA trick him by delaying the start by almost 2 minutes using a live delay in his lighthouse).

However, AA cannot help Baam further because Traum had also tricked him by having him agree that any attempt to help the traitor will render the result of the game void.
