I'll probably re-do some of my picks if people remind me of better choices. Hard to remember it all from a year.
yeah i felt the same for mine too, but even then felt so hard to justify over a ton of the kagurabachi picks i had just because they were so memorable for me. i'd love to post another one excluding that and witch watch since it was mostly those two in my list

Yeah, it would be fun to have a list removing our favourite manga. I'd need a list without Akane-related items, Shinuki without Nue, etc 😂

Can I be honest about something since it's a break week:
I genuinely hate how Jump's first 2 double issues of the year are scheduled now where it's issue > break > issue > break. It feels like it's the worst possible way that they could've scheduled this in my opinion, as they could've scheduled it as a break one week, an issue for two weeks & then another break or issue, two-week break & then resume weekly serialization as normal instead.
If anyone disagrees with this statement, please feel free to respectfully dispute that in this thread.

Personally i dont have a exact problem with the breaks itself but that the leak that happens in the final week of December always ruin the flow and make you feel like the breaks are even longer than what they are kkkk

Hello folks, I just came back from a local comic convention where I bought a 2023 Issue of Jump (the one with the Yozakura 5-year timeskip with surprise), ready to drop the next episode of...

Jump Retro Review

It works like this: I think of a chapter of any series in Jump history that is important for historical or personal reasons, or a particular issue historical on itself, then I wonder: "what was the magazine doing when this chapter/issue was published?". So I search for every available translated chapter from that particular ToC, and I review all those I can find in order to have a snapshot of which series were ongoing and at what part of the story they were at a certain point in time. It's like reading an issue of Jump of the past!

Issue #17, 1999: the one where Luffy and the gang walked to Arlong Park, JoJo classic concluded and Yabuki was debuting with a later axed manga.
Issue #12, 2005: the one where the battle between L and Light had a winner, Matsui debuted with Neuro and many other series delivered their own historical chapter.
Issue #22, 1985: the one where I tried reviewing an issue of the '80s and it was so difficult that I swore to never do that again. Now updated!
Issue #45, 2011: the one where I wanted to cover a pivotal chapter of HunterXHunter, but I read the wrong issue and got a pivotal chapter of Naruto instead.
Issue #15, 1991: the one where a certain Saiyan turned his hair blonde for the first time, and the history of manga changed forever.
Issue #48, 2008: the one where Jump didn't care to celebrate its 2000th issue, but there are a number of historical chapters anyway, most notably Bleach is about vice-captain Omaeda.
Issue #33, 1997: the one where it was the last time we lived in a world without One Piece, and I thought it would be an easy issue to cover but there are too many unfound chapters.
Issue #43, 2011: the one where I corrected the mistakes of the past and covered the issue with that pivotal chapter of HxH, where we mourned the loss of a King.
Issue #41, 2001: the one with the weak motivation of being the last issue of Jump before 9/11, but at least it contained some gems like the 5th chapter of Bleach.
Issue #29, 2017: the one where a beloved Pillar says goodbye at the end of the Mugen Train Arc, and six consecutive series just debuted, all of them notable in different ways.
Issue #41, 1993: the one where YuYu Hakusho gets cruel with kids and nothing else was particularly impressive, sign of a transitional era for the magazine.
Issue #6/7, 2015: the one where Gintama lost an important member of the cast, and Tamura delivered a one-shot between Beelzebub and Hungry Marie.
Issue #29, 1990: the one where I finally had the chance to write about one of my favourite all-time series, Saint Seiya, and also Goku uses his mind-reading technique for the first and only time.
Issue #46, 1981: the one where I was tempted to go through the first Jump with 10 reviewable chapters, finding the first episode of Black Angel and some good classics like Cat's Eye or Dr. Slump.
Issue #36, 2003: The one where Death Note debuted as a special one-shot, tons of battle shonen are thriving at the same time, and Jaguar won the contest for the panel of the week.
Issue #1, 2010: The one that kickstarted the decade of the '10s, with One Piece Strong World heavily promoted any many future succesful authors trying their shot with a not very succesful series.

I had my last retro review only two weeks ago...did I come up with an interesting idea in such a short time?

Issue #7 of 1987, so close to the epic event that was Wrestlemania III. I swore before to never cover the '80s again, but since I broke the oath last year I don't feel obliged to comply now. In this period, the classics of the '80s were still rampant, but some were close to the end so the decade was starting to lose some steam: but unknowingly to everyone at the time, a new legacy had just begun, as we will learn soon.

Before going through, here are the series that I couldn't find:
  • Akaten Kyōshi Nashimoto Kotetsu Chapter 6
  • Star Bakuhatsu Chapter 4
  • Kochikame Chapter 518
  • Sora no Canvas Chapter 25
  • Sekiryūō Chapter 45
  • High School! Kimengumi Chapter 240
  • Tsuide ni Tonchinkan Chapter 94
  • Kirara Chapter 11
As typical when I try to review the '80s, this will be a short review because of so many untraslated works. Even more sad because I couldn't find any hidden gem available, so we will list only classics this time. Notably, Kimagure Orange Road was in a sort of hiatus at the time and therefore absent. As usual, if anyone knows where I can find any of these series, you can PM and I will gladly update my ranking.

Well, with what we have available this time, what was the chapter that made me choose this issue in particular?

1. JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure 5: The chapter that inspired me this week traces way back to the beginning of the bizarre adventures of the Joestar Family, when in Phantom Blood we see the past of Dio Brando and Jonathan Joestar, and the start of their rivalry. Dio plays the worst possible joke by burning alive Danny, Jonathan’s beloved dog. Probably one of the most cruel and ragefueling scene in the history of Jump, surely one that unsettled me a lot when I read it first (and I was adult already). It’s impossible to not hate Dio after this, and 5 chapters were all he needed!
2. Saint Seiya 55: Cover for the first anniversary! The chapter is about the battle between Shiryu the Dragon and the Silver Saint Perseus, one of the strongest of his rank. I didn’t remember how tenacious he was: Shiryu tries every card in his hands to avoid being turned into stone, but Perseus has a counterattack to everything until the Dragon blinds himself for the first of many times and obtains a deserved victory. One of the best bouts before the advent of the Gold Saints (who, by the way, debut exactly one chapter later).
3. Ginga: Nagareboshi Gin 158: A few chapters away from the end, and in fact it is set during what is the evident final battle. A pack of dogs against the main villain Gaia, who emanates a huge aura and appears unbeatable: one of those enemies whose simple presence blocks you out of fear, and makes you helpless in front of such brute force. Truly magnificent, and very brutal. There is a scene, probably from the following chapter, where Gaia decapitates two dogs with his byte…ouch.
4. Dragon Ball 107: Kid Goku is against a mysterious masked fighter, that is strong enough to keep it up with him. He also knows his weakness, the tail. How does he know it? Muten Roshi realizes that the masked fighter is none other than Goku’s deceased grandfather, Son Gohan. I always liked this fight because the atmosphere is peaceful even if they exchange blows, and it’s even better knowing the emotional payoff that will come in the following chapters.
5. Hokuto no Ken 167: We are in the second half of the series, much less appreciated than the historical first, but with some good moments in my opinion. Here we are introduced to Ork, the demon who practices Hokuto even if only Kenshiro is expected to know it, and a man with great ambition who challenges the governor of the land. He softens up during the story, but his introduction is of great impact.
6. Captain Tsubasa 291: Japan has just won against Argentina 5-4, and it’s time for everyone to reflect on what happened during the game. Argentina genius Ramon Diaz (clearly inspired by Diego Armando Maradona) is humbled but recognizes that Tsubasa is stronger than him. The protagonist himself mourns because he did 5 assists and 0 goals in this game, so he can’t be satisfied…typical Tsubasa. I never read this part of the series in manga form, so it’s been a pleasure to discover this chapter.
7. Kinnikuman 375: I can’t not love this. Very close to the series (regular) ending, we get Kinnikuman and friend Neptuneman fighting Omegaman, who can apparently morph his extra arms into whatever he touches. So they become spring which then morph into high voltage poles which electrocute the heroes. But Neptuneman recurs to the power of friendship, and after a moving speech wrestlers from all over the world start running to the arena to assist them. ‘80s are weird but this is too much even for the standards.
8. Sakigake!! Otokojuku 86: I never know what to expect from a random chapter of this series. This time the chapter comes straight from Hokuto no Ken, as two fighters battle in an extremely serious martial arts match, with an extremely serious attendance. One of the spectator is the boss of the losing fighter, who instigates him to commit the ultimate sacrifice: imbuing his fists with poison that will be fatal both for the enemy and for himself. I should really pick this series up someday.
9.City Hunter 95: Saeko has the duo investigating on a case of trafficked women, in honour of Ryo’s former partner Maki (who is rarely mentioned after his death, but I keep encountering chapters related to him). It should be a serious development, but Ryo is horny as hell and transforms the chapter in a festival of perverted comedy…I wouldn’t mind that if the arc was meant to be light, but in this situation it clashes with the mood.

And that was the review. All the chapters would likely end in the upper half if the magazine was ranked in full, but I can't have such luxury. I hope you enjoyed it anyway!

See you on spring break for the next episode of Jump Retro Review!!

Yeah I think the leaks dropping like the week of the Issue 4-5 break happening made it feel super brutal because assuming the leaks hit this Wednesday night (US East here) that's almost 3 weeks which feels awful since we've barely had anything noteworthy to discuss besides Ruri anime and the chapters drop themselves and not everyone does reviews.

Talking about High School! Kimengumi, i watched the first episode of the 2026 anime yesterday, and man, that is a gag series, is soooo crazy and over the top it makes stuff like Roboco looks like just a normal comedy manga, it's pretty funny if you get in the mood but it will be a pretty niche anime that most in the anime community will totally ignore, too bad, but i would advise the members of the thread to at least give it a chance and watch the first episode to see if y'all enjoy it! 🙏

The thing that i got confused about it, is that it's like marketed as a "remake" of the original 80's anime but the thing is that the original anime it's barely a loyal adaptation to the original manga, at least the firs episode i checked, also, both anime are called "High School! Kimengumi" but the 1st episode of both don't actually adapt the manga with the title at all but the prequel series called "3-nen Kimengumi" that run from 1980 to 1982, the big hit one started a month after in 1982, but like said, both anime versions are really not a loyal adaptation of the manga content besides the same "mini bicycle" segment, so i would definitely say this isn't a anime remake but a new anime adaptation of the original manga.

That's not wsj fault but it is just the way the public holiday lined up in January

You need to remember that printing and logistic companies will be on holiday too. Even if they shift it, that doesn't mean printing and logistic companies are ready.

Honestly I am enjoying the peaceful weeks with no chapters.

People will be on holidays spending time with their families anyway not glued to forums 😭

End of Week 1!

Obs:

-JJK Modulo spent the whole week in 1st place, that's impressive.
-Someone Hertz is definitely suffering from stock shortage, we're very likely to get a reprint notice very soon
-Damn, Harukaze didn't survived for a whole week, only 6 days, that really pales in comparison to the 14+ consecutive days run of vol 1, feels bad for the authors...
