I noticed it immediately in the character design but wasn't expecting it to be even more on the nose when I read it. As someone who grew up on Black Jack as one of their first anime and very obviously likes Vash too this was kind of bait for me to be interested in anyway, but it is genuinely promising even outside of these. Just an all-round solid debut, I'm seated.
Didn't comment last week and it feels like there's a lot of takes in the complete opposite to mine from what's been thrown out recently so to make me feel less insane and represent my fellow truthers who share my worldview, here's my takes on everything worth note the past couple weeks:
Under Doctor's first chapter was good. Not stellar, but I think a confidently put together first chapter that works as a complete piece. Haiji is established well - both his design and his demeanour make him a memorable MC - and it being on a plane was a fun choice. It was all well drawn and I'm curious to see where it goes from here I do think the action suffers in the way that Kaedegami did in that its mainly just short bursts of something happening on the page rather than it flowing panel-to-panel in an effective way. I get that Sakamoto Days comparison but its action doesn't have that same sense of character that SD had from its first chapter, even if I would say Tanimoto's art is better than Suzuki's back then. I was also hoping this would go the Chainsaw Man route where we would get manifestations of different diseases and illnesses and leans into then surreal fantasy. This being hand-to-hand combat (and presumably weapons) is something I'll get used to, but doesn't feel like the most exciting battle system for the premise. Who knows. There's time to see it fleshed out, but at the same time there actually isn't that much time so I hope I get more confidence on that front soon.
Otr of the Flame and Harukaze Mound both had unfortunate speed-run final chapters, definitely not the best ways for them to be handled. I preferred Otr's more out of the two for the epilogue section which had a nice somber resolve in its tone, though that final battle extinguished as quick as it started, which was lame. Harukaze Mound on the other hand was a ""decent"" final chapter in terms of content but it lowkey made me more annoyed because it was a reminder of what this series could have been with the brothers being the primary focus and their rivalry and concurrent development actually taking centre stage. Maybe it would have if it did go the long-run, but I think both series messed up the order or priority of things at key stages in that way.
Otr never, ever felt to me like Kawaguchi's success story. The Hunters Guild: Red Hood remains better in my books even if the art was much more cluttered; to me it had better lead characters, a world that felt more exciting to potentially adventure through, and a memorable cancelled ending that still sticks out most of the flops from this decade; both had poor pacing in the early run and strange order of operations decisions. His craft as an artist improved for sure but I think he needs to be drawing for someone else.
As for why Harukaze Mound failed: I get that's its likely exclusionary to those who aren't as versed in baseball rules, and sometimes when it was focused on a match it was less exciting than when it was just about the characters themselves, but I almost think a big part is Kento Matsuura's artwork. He's a really, really good artist. Almost too good. Or at least too clean. There's a polish that makes it hard to break through the veneer and almost acts as a barrier to getting invested in the story it's trying to tell. There's a compliment in there, I guess? I think he needs to be messier, more visceral, less perfect in his presentation. But at this point I also think perhaps this particular duo just isn't destined for luck in the magazine. Shame.
Also, no offence to the 3-4 vocal resident Nue's Exorcist lovers here who are strong in their praise of their favourite and harsh in their critiques of what they hate each week, but I guess it goes to show how different people's tastes can be. Other than the flashback, what we've gotten since and in the couple chapters before has been... so bad, to me. It's not like I'm incapable of really enjoying a chapter that works well a couple times a year (if I'm lucky), but even when I can tell Kawae's presentation improves in a positive curve with each month that passes, I don't think I'll ever be able to get behind his sense (or lack of sense) of tone. The whiplash between the silly and the serious makes me unable to ever really feel content with one development for too long. The series is at its best when he doesn't feel the need to undercut the dramatic moments or eclipse the more lighthearted moments by shifting to the exact opposite thing happening. My kindest reading is that it feels amateurish at its foundation, and my harsher reading is that it feels like desperation to try and constantly show that there's something something - SOMETHING!! - that the reader doesn't have to think about for too much before we jump to the next thing faster than feels natural.
I like it when it presents something and stays the course in a way that doesn't feel conflicting tonally. For the more serious stuff: the final stretch of the Suzaku fight or the early development with Shiroha; or on the other side when Gakuro has to decide which of his increasingly large harem he wants as part of a stupid game. On a personal level I don't care for that latter kind of narrative so I'm never going to love it, but if it's well done I'll give it its flowers. I think the Natsuki stretch is the highlight of the series and managed to have everything sync together in a way that was super enjoyable to read.
It would help if I cared for any of the characters, believed there was anything insightful to Gakuro as a lead or the world and its power system or felt like the increased horniness in the series was something I wanted to read at all, or at least doesn't feel like it's done in the most obvious, in your face, tropey, unimaginative ways. Without sounding petty, there is a impulse that wants to scratch my head when I see people with Nue Exorcist avatars claim other series are poorly written or generally poor in what they're doing and then love their favourite series every weak for making what I feel are its own common mistakes that prevent the series from being anything more than a low-ranking niche battle shonen that isn't capable of adapting to make it feel exclusionary for a potentially larger audience who might otherwise find something to latch onto. Butttt then again... in saying all of this, as an enormous Bleach fan who loved every single chapter of the series and marched strong, unfazed, and joyous week-after-week through the dire stretches of late 00s and early 10s fandom wars, forum shitposting, and hearing the same critiques, memes, and lashings on the series that were often the very reasons why I loved it, I guess it really do be different strokes for different folks.
ANYWAY. That's me being the rare voice of critiquing Nue in what feels like one of the internet's kindest corners towards it. Happy to be the villain to speak my truth when other series I think are doing well get trashed for their own shortcomings. As for other series: Hima-Ten's development has been a good, necessary one. I like it, even if it doesn't spell the eventual end for my pairing. Me & Roboco's latest two chapters were a blast, think I laughed about 13 times between both of them, it's in the my top 5 for both issues. You'll always been the gag queen of the magazine, Roboco <3. Kagurabachi is ripping hard right now. Ichi the Witch is getting more violent and brutal than I gave it credit for. Sakamoto Days really levels up when Sakamoto is back on the page, doesn't it? The series all of a sudden feels fresh and good again. WITCH WATCH and Shinobi Undercover are off to good starts with their new arcs, and I think Modulo will end up considerably higher on my personal rankings than actual Jujutsu Kaisen was, if things keep up.
The new batch feels like they'll be goners in a couple months, so no point in getting too attached to them. But I will stand firm that The Mage Next Door is still the best out of the bunch. I'll admit that the first chapter remains my favourite - the funniest and the best drawn - and it's not been anything special throughout its run, but these occasionally fun chapters like this one or the one at the magic cafe are so charming to me. The mind boggles at the thought that Gonron Egg could be considered the better series of the two. That's just embarrassing to read, mannnn. Every development in the past four or five chapters feels like it was created by a 13-year old and is being published two decades later with no thought that perhaps we should re-think how this reads as a story. Everything about the world building of this new underground place feels so tacked on and there just because! Considering how scribbly the artwork has gotten recently too it feels like Tanizaki's want to actually draw at this point as as little as the audience who wants to read it.
All that to say: I am so very brave for critiquing Nue's Exorcist and claiming that The Mage Next Door is, in fact, quite good still.
Oh, and this was my lowest rated Akane-banashi chapter in 1.5 years (still second best of the week, mind you lol). Truely the end of times.

I'm going to be completely honest, I really don't have much to say about Under Doctor. It was competent, but that's really it. Nothing about it made me want to read more, I didn't find it all that funny (so I don't know where the Spy x Family comparisons are coming from considering what made that work was that the first chapter was goofy and funny as a contrast to the setting), the art didn't really connect with me, and the premise already feels superficial.
Artstyle, specially the old doctor and terrorist guy, the designs are very "Tatsuya Endo", and the whole vibe of the chapter resembles the spy/assassin stuff from Spy x Family, which is why i said the vibe it gave me was Spy x Family but without the "Family" lol

Honestly, kinda surprised with you being a mage next door enjoyer. I do like the premise with the series and all but i can also see some of its fails, i think for a series like this to really work it needs to establish a much more overarching story arc and have some truly memorable characters as antagonist, which unfortunatly we have yet to see and ikinda hate that it still did not make that occur.
Again no offense, Nabe improved massively when compared to his previous one shot and i do root for him at the end even if it seems telling that it will be axe sometime this year.
Also, i gonna give praise to you and tip my hat towards you am also about to be very blunt here about my personal look at nue's exorcist. I genuiely don't really get much of its appeal overall, i mean i know its sexy girls and cool looking battles and the whole it reminds us of older ligh novels from the early 200s, but alas it just might be because what it has shown to me thus far has not really moved me in the way i have really hoped it would. Also i am going to get blasted here but Nue herself is a character i admit to dislike quite a bit, cause the way i see it she just forces Gakuro into so many situations that would am baffled that he has not already yelled at her at times for her behavior and all that as well as deciding almost everything for herself at times.
Sorry for those that enjoy it, but i cannot in good conscience just stay back and say this is the greatest story i have ever read. Now feel free to enjoy it and all and who knows its anime adaptation makes me more of a fan right? But until then this is just personal opinion and all.
Also, i will not lie Ultimate Exorcist Kiyoshi is having an honestly good arc, am liking it so far.
For Under Doctor, again i kinda wanna see were the story itself goes from here but i have some ideas as to what those could be and it got me curious. I won't say them out loud as it could end up being true so i will wait for the second chapter to come out and say it. But did like the first chapter and thought it was original in its story.
No one is going to get blasted or something for making a criticism towards Nue and i also don't remember anyone really saying Nue is the best series ever or something, so i don't think is necessary to act like this place is full of Nue goons overly praising the series that will rip you if you make a criticism, other Jump mangas get much more praise weekly here, some of them i personally think is highly overrated

I know that, its just that at times i do end up coming more across as a dick when it comes to my critiques around certain series. God i know i was during the magus of destruction and high school family batch. Not proud at that period to be honest.
Oh yeah, what are your thoughts about the comment i made about Shinosuke Toujo? I just have a good feeling that he is being prepared to debut sometime this year.
You know, i think there's is an author that i think is more than ready for an official debut in this year and that he is called Shinosuke Toujo.
He is an author who has managed to launch around three one shots in the span of one year with his official debut with Zombie John in Weekly Shonen Jump.
Here is the first one shot he launched as a newcomer in ther form of Zombie John, that launched in Weekly Shonen Jump 2024 issue 40
His next one shot would be Naraku no Kyoshiro in Jump Giga 2025 Winter
Finally there is Tsuchi Ningyou ga Yume no ato in Jump Giga 2025 Autumn
The amount of improvement within the span of a year is pretty wild to see. So i say this dude is a high target to debut sometime in the year if he is that consistent. Also the fact that all his one shots are of a variety of different genres do help him out greatly.
Sorry, thought i would share this given that what i did share is trapped in the other thread so i might as well bring this here for those to enjoy and all that.
1. The Elusive Samurai: What a great character Tokiyuki is, he truly incarnates his moniker of "The Elusive Samurai", until the very end. This is the best way for him to go, and I can't wait for next chapter to know if everything really ends next week or if we will have some streching out, because this didn't feel like a penultimate chapter...but more like a fifth to last chapter. 2. Ichi the Witch: So that scene was real? Not a premonition? Because it was grim like it is typically depicted during premonitions... if this was true, then it was a sickening move and now I am worried and enraged like never before. 3. Kagurabachi: This chapter was strong, more than the last one. Here, the villain got what he wanted and all the other characters (maybe even his allies) are facing despair, but there is still a glimpse of hope for who wants to bet on the future. My only remark is that the chapter title was more suited for next week rather than today. 4. Akane-banashi: Oh God no, not him again. The most hateful villain of current Jump makes an unwanted comeback, and he is already irritating. He's so irritating that he cancels out all the other good things this chapter had, from the flashback to the epiphany of Akane to the new character (another villain?). Why the ranking so high then? Because the man is the ultimate heel, we love to hate him. 5. Under Doctor: I'm going blind, I don't know yet what are your opinions on this, and about mine...it was great. The chara design reminds me of Yasuhiro Nightow, and the protagonist himself is a sort of Vash the Stampede. It was nice that the old doctor turned out to be a genuine good person while the archetype of this kind of characters is usually annoying and superb. The "power" is something cool, at first I would have liked it more if he didn't have supernatural abilities but was just that good, but after the fight (and the backstory) I found it engaging. To conclude: I liked it a lot, and I hope it will succeed because it has that something that distinguishes it from the rest. 6. Sakamoto Days: The cinema guy exits stage for now and the chapter can focus on the coolest stuff. How Takamura was handled here was brilliant, and over the top as per the series premise so not complaining here. With Sakamoto in great shape, the battles are engaging again! 7. Ultimate Exorcist Kiyoshi: What a nice backstory, worthy of a proud warrior. I loved that when he was saying goodbye to everyone, he didn't forget to mention the mascot Cook. But now, what the new opponent can do against an enemy with copy powers? 8. RuriDragon: I fear that slowly but surely the series is going to drop its slice of life premise and enter deep into the fantastical aspects of the premise. The greatest strength of the manga has always been the balance of the two moods, and for now the danger is averted with the remote study session with all the girls. The idea of her meeting a dragon is intriguing though, I'll loor forward to read about it on...March 1st??? 9. Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo: The comeback was cool, but you know what? I think the series was going great even without him. I take it as just an added extra value and not something that can make or break the series. In other topics, I'm concerned about Dabura hallucinating, I hope his head is ok. 10. Shinobi Undercover: They are very determined, I like it. That didn't remove the chance to pull off some comedy at the end, and I like that as well. But what I liked the most was that panel with Squad 9 in full serious mode, ready to start the mission. 11. Hima-Ten!: Himari cut off the brakes, finally! And it is the first time in a while that I liked a chapter about her. She is going to be the protagonist of the next weeks not in name only, and I want to see how it unfolds. Fasten your seatbelts everyone! 12. Witch Watch: For the first time the old man gave me traitor vibes, but it may be just a wrong feeling. The other group is in a difficult situation but the enemy could be someone who can be defeated, and he probably morphed into that for a comedic reason. 13. Hero Girl and Demon Lord call it quits: First attempt at a semi-serious chapter, and it wasn't that bad. Sure, some parts had the Demon Lord emitting Yokai Buster Murakami vibes (and those aren't good vibes at all), but the transition to the other two narrating a backstory while the apocalypse was happening outside of the window was pretty good. Now the neighbours are likeable, so mission accomplished. 14. The Mage Next Door: A problem with this series is that it's strongly episodic in its nature, because of the premise. The various hunts for the next mage can be entertaining enough to work even if they resemble each other, and maybe from this new arc we may get the first true villain of the series, that would shake things up a little. Who knows. 15. Me and Roboco: As I was saying last week, the author is surely a great fan of Toriko, probably his favourite series given how much he loves to draw it into his parodies. Gorilla was the star of the chapter and Motsuo was a pretty good Shinpachi (can you guess what is the series that I keep finding a way to mention?). 16. Someone Hertz: They are very cute having matching thing and trying to scoff it off as if it's nothing important. Will they be like this for the entirety of the series? Will the author run out of ideas for our favorite shy couple? Was he a shy person as well as a teen, so he has plenty of experience to draw from? 17. Nue's Exorcist: Well, that was an interesting way to power up, Gakuro must be the luckiest of all shonen protagonists. The final part switches the mood again to serious, but it is hard to remain serious in such a situation. 18. Harukaze Mound: It was a very hasty conclusion, but the authors can't do anything about it. Sometimes Jump is cruel, the mangakas just want to tell a story at their pace but the business denies them the opportunity. Harukaze Mound concluded like this, with the same number of chapters as Phantom Seer, and an epilogue that screams "We only wanted to keep it on for longer". 19. Blue Box: As many other people like me, I don't think this whole Hina-Taiki situation has been handled well. It is clear that they need to put some distance for the sake of both, but they refuse to do it and that also ruins the theme of the chapter being about changes. I would like to close this chapter and move onto something else at this point, like the most rooted potential relationship between Kyo and Ayame. 20. Gonron Egg: I saw many of those "welcome to the resistance, our leader is going to test you" situations, and this surely wasn't the best of them. And they did casually mention that the stronger warriors have eaten hundreds of Drakharch hearts? Does it make them stronger than anything else before, or is it only 'cause they like the taste?
But honestly i'm so tired of this episodic manga, it's the same with both JK and The Mage Next Door. And while i find Jk Hero's episodic style way better than The Mage, i still feel tired because every manga now seems to be doing that and not risking making an arc right off the bat.
Even tho JK is really fun, but maybe being episodic is what will lead to it's downfall (apparently)

It does work on Someone Hertz and Hima-ten! because they are a romcom type of manga, so it's obvious it would follow a daily life type of route. But maybe i was expecting way more with JK... like they not being able to live a normal life because they have to fight against a great evil or something would be way more interesting than just a daily life type of manga (even though the beginning was pretty good, it's just getting tiresome), and the same goes for The Mage Next Door, i don't want to see the enemy of the week typo...

i find it crazy how the author simply did not care about the brothers relationship at all until the series was finally over... their relationship and rivalry should be top priority in this manga and could definitely save the series from the axe. I really don't know why the author just decided to completely ignore that lol
I don't even remember the last time I replied to any Nue criticism honestly. Criticism to any other battle manga is way more controversial here, even Osoegawa, a new manga that is pretty much likely dead already.
It's fine to not like something, this is why I don't mind anyone not liking Nue, but I don't get why it's treated as a weird thing for this place to not follow this "consensus" that was mostly born from Twitter accounts that actively dislike anything that doesn't fit the "cool battle manga" framework. Roboco gets hate for being a gag manga the same way.
Kinoko Nasu and Ryogo Narita have some of the best and more in depth talks about anime and manga and are constantly reading new stuff for decades and both like Nue, while not talking much about the other new battle manga currently running. Yukinobu Tatsu from Dandadan and Usazaki Shiro herself made Nue fanart instead of anything else in the magazine. Do we consider them weak authors or not worth listening to because they specifically like this manga? It's not about "oh, these famous guys like it, so I must like it as well", but it about not being weird to like Nue at all.
The fact I like it doesn't mean I have to enjoy everything else in the magazine or have no standards. Tastes will just vary a lot over different genres and works over the years. I think there's more depth in Fate/stay night than FMA, I take Hero Academia over Vinland Saga, Chihayafuru is a story about competition more engaging and emotionally impactful than Haikyuu, etc. Opinions are just like that.
Kinda depends on what one expected from it. If you expect a medical manga, this will become the next Hakutaku. If you expect a normal Jump battle manga, it's decent
Trying to do better and actually read the new series that Jump has to offer so I took a gander at Under Doctor:
Pros:
- As many have said, the backdrop of the airplane hijacking was quite unique and lent itself well to both the doctor and assassin sides of MC
- The art was decent. Not as good as everyone else made it seem like it would be but for a newbie its nicely polished
- The characters we do get are actually rather decent and believable...outside of MC. I won't count him as a criticism but wasn't sold on him yet. The older doc is the true savior of the story but the little we got of the flight attendant was nice too
Cons:
- Wasn't impressed by the action at all. Its serviceable but nothing that screamed to me that I NEED to see this animated
- There was a rather significant lack of additional cast. I know, I know that someone was on the other line and we'll get more soon but unless the doc or flight attendant come back, if you don't like the MC from this chapter, there's no character you want to come back for
- I don't have a good grasp of what MC's motivations are. He wants to save people, not kill people cause of his dad. Okay, pretty bare bones but okay start. But in Kagura, we have Chihiro's dad dying ch. 1. In Nue, we know that HIS dad went missing from a spirit in ch. 1. Here, there's nothing more than just the rather basic moral backbone that killing is bad. I have no understanding of WHY he wants to be a doctor versus just...not killing people. And I know it will come but in Jump, you have about 5 chapters to hook your audience.
- It feels rather rushed. How did the passenger get food poisoning from water without any of the flight attendants realizing? How did they sneak guns on board? How did the gunman not check MC was hurt from the gun shot and how did MC just sneak himself and the doc to the cargo hold? He goes to first class, we see him fight none of the terrorists and he takes down the hijacker with no wounds with one double spread. I feel like, while I enjoyed the medical portions, it actually took away from the action bits
- Outside of the action being pretty barebones, I'm cautiously hesitant about what we're going to get. He pretty much defeated every bad guy with pressure point attacks. This, coupled with the fact he doesn't want to kill anybody, feels like you're writing yourself into a corner with the action. I want to be wrong, hope I am, but seeing two finger jabs over and over for 100s of chapters would get stale VERY fast
Overall: 4.5/10; It isn't bad by any metrics and I'm definitely being harsher because I expected more from the better reactions. Its good, it probably does better than most newbies do but if this was a vet or returning authors next work, it'd feel pretty lackluster. A lot of my criticisms, tho, can easily be resolved if Chs 2-5 expand and do more so I'm hoping for more
Holy Hertz-tastic week. It’s basically on the heels of Bachi some days. (granted this could be a surge due to restocking making up for missed numbers from previous days, so I still expect the total to be closer to Akane than to Bachi, but it’s still looking very real that it’ll overtake Akane.

1-2: This is actually terrible, how did this get published; Bad
3-4: Its alright, not great but good points; Good
5-6: A fun read, felt something when engaging; Great
7-8: Few issues, fun/emotional and generally a decent piece of writing; Excellent
9-10: Thought provoking, a chapter that will be remembered for the series as a whole and/or in manga in general; Phenomenal/Perfect
So yeah, 4.5 to me is like, its good but if the series disappeared forever it would leave me with no feelings whatsoever

Second, if I'm being honest. Good = "Bad" I guess by your definition. Cause truthfully, if you're just, good, in Jump, you're pretty much lackluster. I didn't want to go as far as to call it bad but if that's how you interpret a 4.5, then that's that
Edit: I guess average is more the better term. Good to me is adequate. It has a lot of problems but it isn't unredeemable. And also, I have it almost at a 5 which would be almost enjoyable but like I said, I had higher expectations so I lowered it a little
