Elephant in the room being ignored as usual for these comparisons, it's not the same at all.

Kinato’s Magic (Kento Amemiya)

I’m so honored to receive a bellyband recommendation from Suzuki Sensei for volume 1. Let me handle a spin-off series starring Granny Miya!
Amemiya being like "You know, just in case..." lol

Kinato outdoing every 2025 axe in its first week is honestly impressive considering I expected it to perform on par with those axes
UD outdoing Shinobi (though by one place) is even more impressive
I am honestly very surprised by how well Under Doctor is currently doing. It hasn't grown on me, and I really did not enjoy this week's chapter, but I will continue to read it and see if my feeling change as time goes on. The plot is meh, even with the introduction of the Cold Sleep and the Whisperers and the characters aren't written well enough to make me care much. The designs are pretty generic, they do not play well off one another, and they all seem pretty one note and flat.

I personally prefer Kinato better, it is more of a traditional shonen and isn't trying to be anything more than that.

To be honest, I worry about upcoming axes just because I feel like we have too many good (or at least good performing) series right now. UD seems to be surviving fine, Roku seems to be performing surprisingly well?m, and I hesitate to think 2B is getting swiftly cut unless Sorachi’s inability to adapt gets it canned or pushed to Jump+. This means the only series in a likely axeable position are Drawn to the Fire (maybe bias on my part of not feeling confident in it nearly as much as Roku) and Kinato, which will probably have to go the way of Otr due to there being nothing else to axe (and the story moving the way it is right now kind of lends itself to an Otr-esque timeline of ending, so it was probably that timeframe the author was told if I had to guess).

The only saving grace here is that, unless this final arc leading up to the trip and with Honoka goes in an unprecedented direction/longer, Blue Box and Himaten are probably both ending next round (which, isn’t so much a grace when you consider how that’s a double romance loss for the mag). I suspect one of those two will serve to empty the 21st slot and the other will take the blow for an axe, meaning that if they do yet another 3-batch, for some reason, it’ll probably be those two and then Kinato and Drawn to the Fire dying next batch.

With all this in mind I unfortunately don’t have high hopes for Hal Formula’s survival. As much as I enjoyed Terasaka’s character writing in GGG, I feel like Animal Signal has done a decent job of showing both appeal and educational value, and racing is a harder subject to sell in Jump; plus, to be honest, I have a feeling the younger guy in the preview art isn’t the most eye-catching character for a jump demographic.

In short, while 2025 felt like a year of little hope for new series, I feel like this year has too much hope, and we’re really gonna have to axe something that shouldn’t’ve had to suffer the axe.

Speaking of, with Hima seeming to be wrapping up, does this mean we’ll be on our third installment of “Saito cancels a series and then announces an anime on/after the final chapter”?

Sakamoto days should be on its final battle, so it' most likely finished when the next batch comes.

What is UD about?

I "like" the chapters, but at the same time, there is no direction. It's a bit like early Sakamoto but worse.

How many Jump series do you think slot in the consensus top 5 of the main genres (Adventure, battle, non battle battle/drama, gag, romance, sports, SoL)? What outside series do you think are ahead of Jump in those spots? Any hidden gems you think will take off?
That depends, since so many of them are sharing the same checkboxes and what not. However, one thing I can positively say is that what makes a good lineup for Jump is how varied it is. For me, the 4 main genres I want are Battle, Gag/Comedy, Sports, and Romance. If there is a chance for something that is miscellaneous, I will accept it. Now having said that, I will gladly share which series fill those and what I will expect with the magazine going forward. A top 5 is great, but a top 10-15 is essential. 10 is the magic number, but 13 to 15 is important too since let’s say if Jump will lose some established series, they would need those series to step up to overthrow the other or to fill in their positions when they do leave. I will now list the series I’m keeping my eyes on and will not include titles that are ending for sure. So no Roboco, Sakamoto, Witch Watch, Blue Box, and possibly Hima-Ten!.

Battle:

-One Piece: The very pillar of the magazine and the overall face and flagship of Jump, so until it concludes, Jump needs to prepare for that.

-Nue’s Exorcist: Yeah aside from it being a romcom harem as well (with a few ecchi elements, but not enough that reach Yuuna) it won’t reach as high in the ToC, it will have its fans and also fill a bit of the exorcist itch along with another title I will get to later. But at least it is better than where it was 2 years ago or more where everyone was trying to jump on the Demon Sayer or JJK bandwagon but still trying to be themselves.

-Kagurabachi: Another possible pillar, but it is sketchy due to the recent health problems with Hokazono. However another thing that is more interesting and should be pointed out is how it kind of crosses the line when it feels like a Senin story than a Shonen. I know that that debate has been brought up countless times with other series, but at least Hokazono has grown and learned as he went along, and that explosion from its leak on the internet has really helped give it recognition.

-Ultimate Exorcist Kiyoshi: Probably the most Shonen of Shonen series that wears its influence on its sleeve. With the end of 5 series coming soon, Jump will have to rely on this for a while, while also preparing for the final parts after concluding another major arc. I wouldn’t put this as high, but somewhere in the middle.

-Ichi the Witch: Probably, the third pillar of the magazine. Also, what I believe is helping out and from what I heard in a Mothers Basement video is that we have probably entered a new golden age for fantasy anime, which does help it getting that reception and a great chance for Jump to gather that audience. Not to say that Jump hasn’t, but would get bigger if Jump plays its cards right. Also with a veteran duo of Nishi and Usazaki, I’m positive this will be standing strong with One Piece.

-Shinobi Undercover: Just like Kiyoshi, it is another very Shoneny series in Jump and in a good way. Although it isn’t as high as Ichi but still stronger than Kiyoshi, I felt this was the second strongest from 2024 and still stand by that statement. Shinobi has a ways to go but I would put this in my top 10.

Romance:

-Someone Hertz: A very strong start and it hasn’t even been a year yet for the series. Also, it isn’t a comedy which helps widen its appeal. I know that once Blue Box and possibly Hima-Ten!, conclude this year, this title will be the pillar for the romance department. It’s in the top 10 for sure, unless another romance series wants to come in like Sezeki-san (that GFC winner), this is the standard.

Miscellaneous:

-Akane-banashi: I always can’t tell where to put this series as a whole. On one hand it can feel sports like due to the cups and tournaments that are present in the series, but on the other hand, it is more drama oriented because of its subject matter (with a bit of comedy). I’m so glad that this series exists because it is so unique in its own way that it has not other competition against it. This series is also in the 10 and deserves to be recognized. Although one thing that has been an interesting conversation regarding the series is gonna be the length. Now I’ve talked about it with some friends on discord, and I predict it will be a 350-400 chapter length series. I know that it is a stretch, but with what we are promised and what it’s building, that is my prediction and am sticking to my guns on this.

Those are my thoughts. With 8 out the 13 staying and new titles that are now gaining traction like Under Doctor, Roku’s House of Oddities, and the recent high reception for Animal Signal, there is a lot to anticipate. But that is just the surface level. The next thing to look at is the rest of the series we will see if they stay at go and if any of the other titles that I mentioned will conclude next year. The only ones I see that could conclude next year are Nue’s Exorcist and Ultimate Exorcist Kiyoshi, but that is depending on how much more is left with both and if Saito is willing to push them more. So titles like Kinato’s Magic, Drawn to the Fire, Hal Formila, and Canon Master have yet to be determined until we see their ToC placements and sales. But if I’m going to say anything, the 3 genres Saito should focus on are comedies, sports, and romances. But if I’m going to counter that, Roku is looking like a solid comedy and its ToC placement shows it. Sports needs to be a success this time around. However Romance is safe with Someone Hertz, but it needs a second so it won’t feel lonely. I honestly believe having just 2-3 for those 3 genres in particular to represent is important. I know that is asking a lot, but I believe a well balanced magazine would fill a reader with a well balanced diet of genres to feel satisfied throughout the day as both a fan and a consumer.

I feel the same way. This isn’t me shitting on it because I really want to love it but the plot seems aimless and the art (choreography, background, and proportions seem a little bare at times). My guess as to why it’s doing well is because the series really nails the patient drama and emotion of the doctor/patient relationship/saving.

That’s also why I think JP may like it. I have a theory that the new Jump series that beat the axe have two qualities; suitable “Jump” style art and they are good at making you feel something, an emotion, the ethos. It explains sooooooo much when you view it through that lens for when things survive or get axed

Yeah, I have read more of Under Doctor since my last post where I mentioned not really liking the first 3 chapters, and while it does get a tad better, it is still a pretty flawed series. Having said that, I do kind of enjoy it and see potential in it. I could see it hitting its stride later on, so far it is still trying to figure out what kind of series it is.

You’re not wrong, but I still feel like it has 2 more batches left in it, whereas both Blue Box and Himaten feel like they will genuinely end next batch. Plus I have a feeling Jump would not be keen to end Blue Box and Sakamoto in the same wave given how semi-pillarsome they have been in this transitory period between the MHA/JJK period and the newest gen.

So far Under Doctor is just exploring the setting to see what works best. It hasn't settled on a direction yet because nothing's been ranked especially well.

Some series take a while to find their feet, Yozakura took an entire year of screwing around with one-offs and different kinds of content before it finally figured out what readers really liked. The question of course is if Under Doctor will be allowed to continue until it can potentially find that route to higher ToC.

Issue 28 rankings:

Tier 1 (Great):

1 - Roku (that's a BIG dog! But seriously, this series is great. Very much enjoyed this chapter!)
2 - Ichi the Witch (so she is literally Tsukishima from Bleach but not as broken since it gets less potent the more times it's used on someone)
3 - Akanebanashi (Very good Kaisei focused chapter. Can't wait to see how he tells God of Death...seems like he might focus on the son more? Interesting.)
4 - Someone Hertz (very good continuation and conclusion from the previous chapter...this two parter shows that it has potential to be kind of a bit more "battle shounen esque" in the future without losing it's core, so that's nice)
5 - Shinobi Undercover (yesss hype lore chapter, all for it)

Tier 2 (Good):

- Witch Watch (the game got interrupted nooooo, but this gives a chance to reset and start a new game, hopefully Miharu gets a better partner than Ban lol, literally anyone else)
- Ultimate Exorcist Kiyoshi (nice wrap up and transition chapter. Kiyoshi becomes a Cross Paladin! Though it felt a bit anticlimactic to me...)
- Blue Box (go on Taiki....will be funny if next chapter it just reveals he lost lol)
- Kinato's Magic (TOURNAMENT ARCCCCCCC, looking forward to it)

Tier 3 (Ok):

- Under Doctor (felt a bit rushed, it was like 3 chapters worth of stuff in one and not the good kind. Oh well, we got some villains now)
- Drawn to the Fire (making progress, we can expand the team now)
- Nue's Exorcist (I don't really see the point of this, if I'm being honest...also after Kasha there's still Gashadokuro, who is said to be even stronger, so getting rid of the powers of one of your strongest so one of the other strongest can kill herself to take down Kasha seems silly.)
- Me and Roboco
- Himaten (a really big moment and it seems we're approaching the end...I just don't really care enough about this series for moments like these to hit, oh well lol)
- Sakamoto Days (thought the fight would go on for a bit more tbh)
- Animal Signal (Oh? A romance...idk why, but I wasn't expecting it, but I should have lmao. Anyway, yeah it's fine, didn't grasp me in anyway, but romance series are not usually my thing. The art is cute, as expected from Tsutsui. I'm down to learn more random facts about animals, that's its selling point to me right now...it's like reading a whole chapter of those random fact tangents Araki goes on during Jojo lol. Let's see where it goes!)
- Class 2-B (yeah it still manages to just be....ok. Apparently there's some Gintama references in here, but I don't get them since I haven't read it lol. I did enjoy the gag of the vine lowering the budget, but that's about it. Also maybe it's just because I'm not super into it but boy this series is....wordy.)

Overall a meh issue of the mag for me. Wasn't really engaged with a lot of it.

Really? I think it could end in July and in time for HxH to take its spot. Suzuki’s weakness is kind of big plot stuff and he’s not the type of writer I think will have a lengthy epilogue. Like once the fight ends I think we get one more chapter

It’s a great point; I just have a lot of trouble envisioning how he can make long arcs. That’s why I think he should’ve done a fantasy world like Toriko where haiji could hunt for materials and ingredients. It have been real cool used real life diseases allegorically for fantasy diseases.

Love the first chapter of Animal Signal. Very cute and fun read. Hopefully the next chapters are of the same quality.
