Lemme post the images for the sake of yall's convenience:

Bit torn on this: on one hand some of this is just basic basketball poses. Like the rising up three pointer right in front of the guy? Pretty sure the 6th man in kuroko had a similar pose. The backwards dunk and behind the board layup though are unique enough that it feels a little obvious (maybe he saw it then forgot and rediscovered it in his mind without the intention to plagiarize?)

Am guessing kagurabachi gets the cover with grey keys, shinobigoto and a one shot getting the color pages.

I don't want to sound like a hater, but I feel that if this manga were a battle shonen, the criticism would be harsher. I see comments on series like Roku, for example, where any possibility of a fight starting between the characters is treated as if it were the worst thing in the world.
I agree; ultimately, it falls on the JP audience being weird with battle series right now. It’s frustrating that the only action hits we’ve had was in 2024 with Shinobi and Ichi (not counting a short sequel series in Modulo). Change needs to happen; whether that’s removing Saito and putting someone like Honda in or doing something extreme like the famous 6 series serialization. They need to figure it out at Shuseia. What do you all think they should do?

I’m totally with what Saito is doing for series now as they are a league up. It’s better than last year with serializations however if I am going to be completely honest, I’m fine with the battle series we have. The real thing I want to see focused on is variety. So far, the comedy and romance series (while the latter was strong and we had departures it has slowly come back), the one I want is sports. Which I hope that Hal Formula will climb back.

I hope Saito can succeed. If there needs to be a shakeup, I really don’t need a batch of 6 right now. It’s important to temper expectations, but if we are getting nothing but failure series along with other series concluding at the same time, then I think it is worth it for a batch of 5 or 6.

I get the vibe that outside of a few exceptions like Kagurabachi, Japan isn't that interested in new battle shonen. It's tough for Japanese causal fans to be looking hard for the next big action series when the old guys on the block are still breaking records and sucking up all the attention. Maybe when Demon Slayer and Jujutsu Kaisen anime are truly over, we can see an explosion of new battle series break out as people look for the next 'big thing'

Maybe Saito has to poach some talent from manga series that are finished outside the magazine, the only big name who hasn’t returned with a series is probably Iseyama, but I’m concerned that AoT was all he had as a writer. I doubt kishi comes back even though j think that’d be awesome and we know the bleach sequel will sell but that seems like a cheap accomplishment for the mag like Modulo (not a NEW hit series)

I guess Saito’s “break glass in case of emergency” would be to have furudate come back with a new sports series (or even a act-adv series) or have Goutouge come back with an act-adv (hopefully more focus on adventure this time). Likely both are helping the anime side out for their movies before they return though so we probably won’t see them return in the 20’s. I prefer having new or axed vet authors strike it big though. I do think Red Hood/Otrs author will strike it big in his third series whether it’s that one shot or hopefully something more fantasy adventure based similar to his mentor Horikoshi (who also seems to be itching to come back).

You guys can't be serious about an anti battle shonen bias, it's literally the most supported genre by both the manga and anime industries. Series like Someone Hertz are just more appealing to the public than every battle shonen Jump released in the last two years.

Agreed. Jump with an anti battle bias is just incredibly silly to think. Its like saying weekly shonen magazine is anti romcom. Its crazy.

Are you guys talking about battle shonen bias just because Ura is being treated as a hit?

No that’s disingenuous to say that we said there is anti battle bias by Jump. We’re saying there is definitely a problem with Jump getting new battle series consistenly off the ground right now and during the Saito era. There hasn’t been a successful new battle series in 2 years. Part of that falls on Jump editorial failing to get good material or advice (the fumbling of Otr, under Doctor, Kinato, and 2B has been amateurish and falls on editorial) and part of that is Jump’s audiences tastes changing as even the successful battle series are not consistently top of the ToC or going wild in sales.

It’s impressive the new non battle series Saito and co have gotten off the ground in Hertz, Roku, and now seemingly Ura (just one chapter but great signs); it’s actually something ironically Nakano (the comedy guy) struggled to do until Roboco. But the trade off is Saito has been struggling on the battle series. He really only has Shinobi, Kiyoshi, and Ichi under his belt (the latter really being a well established author).

Again, never said jump has an anti battle bias, but they’re struggling getting something new off the ground (🤞 for grey keys). Let’s try to have a more charitable read of other posts please 😊!

Almost every success from 2023/24 was a battle series, and every series from those years that is still currently running in the magazine is one. Just the battle series from those two years alone make up a fourth of the current the line up. What we're seeing right now is just things balancing out, and even then we still only have 2 series that are definitely sticking around from the last two years, Someone Hertz and Roku.

2023 is not relevant since Saito took over halfway through 2024. So the only new battle series’in close to 2.5 years that Saito oversaw are Kiyoshi, Shinobi, and Ichi. Ichi has been big and hopefully will grow bigger but Shinobi and Kiyoshi (which came out on Saito’s first day so it’s more of a Nakano success imo) have not exploded in popularity yet (hopefully they will though as I adore UEK).

This is not true at all.

And comparing any new battle shonen with outlier like that is unproductive.

Literally no other series will ever hit that number again for decades, because those 2 series got thr perfect storm of good anime relasing during covid. Objectivetly, the manga itself is very mediocre

It's also not fair to compare current sales numbers to series from prior decades, given a huge bulk of sales come from digital nowadays, and those numbers aren't really released publicly.
More people are likely consuming manga worldwide than ever before, it's just now people aren't restricted to buying paper versions of the magazine or volumes.

Kinato selling closeish 5k when getting cancelled and no color pages is actually really impressive. That’s more than most axed series’ first volume.

Under Doctors 10k would be great if it’s was a precipitous drop from volume 1
--- Double Post Merged, , Original Post Date: ---

Sakamoto Days will have the lead color pages on issue #42-43!

Does that mean it’s the penultimate chapter?
