And if I remember correctly, in the FoD arc Garam gave Baam some of Arlen's keepsakes which would include the pocket that contained Arlen's diary so how is it that Baam doesn't know anything about his past and about his parents

I don't see the fault in any of this logic. Rather think your'e being too near-sighted with your view especially with yama and yasratcha. From Yama's POV I see character development in the way he's offering himself as fodder to go find the book instead of the beastkin. If this was the same...

Since Gustang helped Arlen escape from the Tower, perhaps that might be one of his drawcards to get Baam to side with him in this war

Judging by the pace of the story any future marriage would probably feature as part of a story epilogue. We're going towards 600 chapters in the story and we've just covered roughly a third of the regular floors.
