I never liked anime. In fact, I made fun of it pretty regularly. I guess it's only fitting that I was forced to live with an anime fan in college. He was a 6ft tall Kenyan with a big afro. He smoked a ton of weed. I remember seeing him watching Naruto and him being obessed with it. Specifically, the Orochimaru/Sound Ninja invading Konoha during the Chuunin Exams.
We made a bet, which I lost. I had to watch the first 15 episodes of Naruto. I think that ends up being about the first 30 or so chapters. And here I am, almost 10 years later and I am impatiently waiting chapter 643. I have become everything I used to mock, and for that clarity, I am forever grateful. My eyes are open to not just anime/manga, but to the notion that you can't knock it til you try it.
(All that being said, Naruto, Bleach and Basilisk are the only manga that I ever got into. If you have any suggestions I'm open to hear'em! I've tried One Piece but its just to wacky, and I feel the same about Fairy Tale. Then again, Naruto and Bleach were wacky as hell at the beginning. I guess I just haven't gotten over the wacky expositional hump yet. Y'know, where all of it pays off in badass form?)
Giving and receiving high fives.
