1) one (or both) jinchuurikis become villains
2) Madara manages to extract both halves and then has command of the full power of the kyuubi...

I think everyone is forgetting that Kushina was holding back the kyuubi and she was dying. Minato had to act quickly before the kyuubi was released again.
