Well the villains in this series are about as well written as 13 year old edgelords first fanfic so them making stupid decisions is par course.

Hollow pretty much describes this arc as a whole.

Too be honest Nero is a selfish prick too considering how he handed control to shura. Nero is either to apathic to notice how unstable shura or simply doesn't care because it's not in the dice. It's safe to say he never bother actually raising him with moral.

Deku was tried from the non stop fighting and already hates AFO an anticlimax explosion that didn't kill anyone adds nothing. Also just AFO says he wants to make Deku's life miserable so again that explosion was pointless.
