It does seem to me that whenever he's used even a small amount of QB chakra that his eyes change to slitted pupils and his whiskers are more pronounced. So I think he was using at least a BIT of QB chakra against Kakuzu.

Yeah, I don't see Kishi doing that either. I was just trying to put up a thought line that might explain how he could tie it into the overall theme of the manga.

@Toad Sage But couldn't the jutsu build up also be a build up to his parentage? One thing that Kishi DOES focus on is that jutsus tend to run in families. The Uchiha are gifted fire users, only someone with the genetics of the first can control the mokuton, and don't even get me started on...
