based on the jutsu pein/pain used for itachi and kisame during the rescue gaara arc, he may have a jutsu or a process enabling him to transfer his consciousness into other bodies. one of the akatsuki bodies seemed kinda fat, so they might not really be clones. and maybe madara didn't die, but...
