Kakashi was trying to achieve a more potent CHIDORI :O
to be honest, I'd rather if they left Asuma dead, but it's an anime/manga.. so it's not unheard of that he'd somehow NOT be dead.

My prediction is...
ASUMA IS STILL ALIVE!!! :O..
he burned his own RIGHT hand when he fought that voodoo dude
and "Kakashi" is wearing a bandage on his right hand for no apparent reason! :O
And then after all is said and revealed, they will do a flash back to that...
