Clare is a good character design, but not original: Clare is in fact a powered-up second coming of Yagi1s best character design from his previous manga, Ikuno from Angel Densetsu. Isley vaguely reminds me of male leads in other mangas, too. Miria, however, is another matter: a rare female...

I think this category is ill-defined. Does something covered in multiple story arcs rather than flashbacks and gaidens count as "past" and "background"? If yes, then Clare's past and background has no competition, but if no, then I nominate Cassandra. Unlike the other awakeneds and abyssal ones...

Chapter 113 Having killed off several characters and introduced more warriors and more awakeneds by the dozen, at one point I was wondering where all this is going and whether Yagi lost motivation. And then comes this chapter, a standalone that isn't a real standalone (where am I quoting from?)...

I like Teresa & Clare's interaction, but I have to nominate Riful & Dauf. Back before they died, I found myself looking forward to the weird husband-and-wife exchanges in which the monsters re-gained their lost humanity.

Rubel, hands down. A good character design with those Gestapo glasses, a complex plot element as double agent, an ambiguous baddie who both helps Clare & Miria and wants to get them killed, and I suspect we still don't know everything about him.

Riful. The mangaka merged innocent child, dominant wife and ruthless monster in one, and gave her the most versatile abyssal body (what about the zombie-abyssals woud she not be able to reproduce?)

Flora's is a close second, but I go with endorsing Isley's. For me it wasn't entirely unexpected, but incredibly sad yeah right, just when the ultimate monster regained a semblance of humanity he is hunted down and meets a horrible death.
