The match between Ryoga and "Nanjiro" continues and Ryoga is able to defeat the Samurai Zone. As they continue rallying, Medanore tells everyone what Nanjiro once told him regarding his sons. In the past, before Ryoga started livng with them, Ryoma unconsciously stole his father's backhand slice and Nanjiro was never able to use it again, moreover in his professional matches Nanjiro could feel that his skills decreased the more he played with his son. So yeah, the big reveal Konomi promised was that the "consume" ability was also originally Ryoma's.
When Ryoga moves in, Nanjiro realizes that it is an ability that they possess due to their bloodline or something like that, and he explained it to Ryoga making him promise not to play seriously against Ryoma. Nanjiro even tried to suggest Ryoma to quit tennis and play other sports, but Ryoma liked tennis too much, so Ryoga broke his promise and played seriously against Ryoma, stealing his "consume" ability.
Some time later, after Ryoga was taken to Spain to live with his aunt, Nanjiro visited them and they played a little, then Nanjiro announced his decision to retire from professional tennis.
After the flashback, we get back to the match in the present. Ryoga is enjoying himself but that comes to a sudden end when "Nanjiro" collapses. Ryoga looks crushed and in despair because things always end like that for him. He remembers the time when Nanjiro told him he was retiring in order to pursue another dream, which was raising a tennis player who never gives up and can inspire others as a beacon of hope (Ryoma). Seeing that Ryoma is lying motionless on the court, Ryoga says that nothing matters anymore and gets ready to leave the stadium with tears in his eyes.
However, at that moment, Ryoma gets up and says "Are you giving up?"
