Very curious about the ToC this week. Will animal signal place low again? If so, it’s probably due to the animal facts being the only source of interest; it doesn’t really provoke excitement with its story or characters (it kind of doesn’t really attempt it much). The draw for the series is the animal facts so I’m curious if that’ll be enough.

HAL’s first ranking is the week. Curious if it will be the success I was guessing it’d be. You can definitely feel Terasaka trying to show the excitement and passion that GGG was missing (good story and characters but it was missing that wonder element). The art is going to be the big drive for it.

Similarly, it’ll give us a better idea on 2B as it’ll be more into the plot after the twist. Frankly, I’m loving it like it’s gintama but I think it’s DOA. They’ll definitely keep it for a round; I’m just hoping due to the lower expectations comedy have and the decent sales I expect it to have that it may stay.

Kinato and DttF are both definitely donezo though.

Does anyone know how Kawaguchi’s one shot did on JP’s online communities? Did it trend or get a lot of buzz?

Animal Signal's draw are the characters and their dynamic, most situations are an excuse to have Kokone and Tsubasa interacting and having slightly romantic moments. The animal element adds theme and cuteness to it. The public may not be liking it, but that's what it's trying to do.

And my main issue with Hal Formula is that it tries to say it's this manga burning with passion, but it's mostly boring training instead of actual full races. Initial D had Takumi winning a cool race by chapter 3, setting up rivalries and future battles before going through the more technical stuff. I have a feeling Terasaka maybe should not be writing manga for shounen magazines.

You can't really compare street racing to F1, it's very different stuff and F1 is way more more complicated and full of rules and technical stuff that you have to explain for readers, also the races itself are just naturally not going to be as "exciting" as street racing, so far Terasaka is doing a good job in keeping the manga interesting for a audience that would naturally not be interested on it.

He's the writer, he can come up with solutions or skip stuff and go back to it later, he doesn't need to follow made-up rules to write the story. Fact is, this is a racing shounen manga with no actual races at all so far. It's not like everyone who watches F-1 loves training and qualifiers, I would guess most people only watch the races.

Hinomaru was about a sport where most bouts last a few seconds and where fighters can win tournaments while losing 3~4 fights. The manga had to come up with more unrealistic longer fights and create situations with tension because having the protagonist lose a bunch of times every tournament and just move on, like the real sport, would be anti-climatic. Bending things a bit make for a more interesting manga.

Reading comments on Twitter & Forum, is pretty positive actually, i feel like Kawaguchi only needs to fix his problem with the beginning of his mangas and he would finally get a hit because i see jp readers like him and his art.

Yeah because the first volume of the series is clearly not about the races but about Miharu struggling with his life, career and lil bro expectations, i feel like now on vol 2 (ch7 finished vol 1) that it will start being more about the races.

UD managed to chart on this Weekly Shoseki just with the reprint! That's pretty impressive:

Weekly Shoseki Top 500 (7/20/26 - 7/26/26)

490. Under Doctor #1 (1,075 / 22,657)

They did not even put any warnings with that Iori chapter in KGB back then.

I feel that Terasaka constantly tries to push slow paced character driven story in a sports manga, which has failed iver and over again. IDK, I feel that he just stubbornly tried to push the same things in a different skin

I do feel that Hal Formula has the same issues that probably is what caused Greens to fail. He may have switched out the 'slowest' sport for the 'fastest' as he joked about in the first author comment but I don't think golf was the issue, it was just so slow-paced, training-focused, and single character-driven for WSJ, at least as long as there's no romance involved. I like both of them, but they're not really Jump kind of series that way.

I think he could do well in WSM which does run some successful series like that.

Though as always, I'm not sure what it even would take for a sports series to do well in modern jump. The closest we've had in recent years is a primarily romance-centric series using sports as a connecting theme (Blue Box) and a series making an art form competitive like it's a sport (Akane-banashi). But no good old regular sports series.

After 9 years since U19, Yuuji Kimura is back with a new serialization on Comic Rex from Ichijinsha:

Not what I expected. Now the mystery has been solved of where the artists of the batch of 6 are now.

Out of those 6 this artist is a mystery after the failure of U19 and disappeared off the face of the earth.

I am no expert on the matter but I don’t know that Japan does “trigger warnings” the way we do in the West a lot nowadays. I suspect if the content was such that it would need a “content warning” by their measurement, that content would not make it to the magazine, and would instead be edited to portray something in a way that conforms to the content guidelines of the magazine. What they did here might show that bearing through, in that the chapter did very little to visibly show her having killed herself outside of all the context clues making it clear (to the point that I’m seeing a lot of people not actually catch on to the fact that she committed suicide on a first read).

The only time I recall seeing a warning at the start of a chapter was when authors were apologizing for not finishing the art for the chapter.

I've seen content warnings in anime before, Iron Wok Jan this season for example has a message in JP saying along the lines of "we have chosen to adapt this manga accurately, and as such some of the content is a product of its time and may be considered offensive".

I don't think I've seen one in manga, but it's possible we're just not getting them translated because it's just an info page before the chapter.

Anyway I feel that the KGB one do not exactly need a content warning. It was extremely subtle that I actually missed it the first read. I thought the mom simply left (totally missed her in the bathtub). The Iori one was way more explicit. Not to mention this is literally a manga with lots and lots of gore.

The overload of warnings are just... idk, too much pearlclutching in my opinion

And has anyone seen the witch watch chapter in the same week

As someone who loved Green Green Greens, yeah, it is better than Hal Formula, which feels like it's running red flags every chapter that we need that to pay off - unless what we're getting is actually going to remain the main storyline in the way its presented? Despite that comment on it being the fastest sport, I actually haven't been that impressed by any of the on-track scenes. That sort of insane speed and high energy hasn't came across in the artwork where it should, which is a shame because I still think his character work is very solid. It is missing that little extra something though. I thought that would be the series that I'd be rooting for to survive but if this being sacrificed for Cannon Master to have a whiff of a chance, I'll take it; another really good chapter this week - power levels feel balanced in a way that doesn't affect the coolness of the fight, Bharat has more fleshing him out to give him credit (and makes his perceived shortcomings feel much more a reflection of his internal inadequacy than his actual skill level) and Ur remains a good high spirited companion. There being an economic reasoning for the new mission is a cool little detail. I do genuinely think this is the best battle shonen in the magazine since Ichi the Witch.

I'm presuming the double issue this year then is #37/38 (and then we have another around #42/43 as an extra this year, right)? Still holding out hope that Bleach resumes on the double issue in keeping with its own tradition, fingers crossed Thursday brings Good News, because I don't think Sakamoto Days will end otherwise in a couple chapters - maybe by end of August instead. And like other, happy for Atsushi Nakamura and Roku’s House of Oddities on getting the cover. I was totally not sold on the series for the first several chapters but I've grown fond of it since then. I'm always happy and willing to be swayed by a series of (and to be equally turned off by it) and it's at a point where I would actually quite like it to be the next mainstay gag series in the magazine.

Animal Signal hasn't felt like a series with a long life in the magazine to me. Maybe it's because I haven't seen anything to indicate it's buzzy either. It's very competent, very cute, and very forgettable. Like was pointed out: if it did survive, it would be the first series in this decade to rank 9th for the first time and manage it and I just don't think it's that special to achieve that feat.

Top 5 of Issue #35:
1. Hunter x Hunter
2. Akane-banashi
3. Kagurabachi
4. Cannon Master
5. Ichi the Witch

Nearly finished catching up to the magazine again after being lazy for a bit and Sakamoto Days is killing me man."Sakamoto is gonna die oh but its actually Uzuki Sakamoto" nobody thinks he's going to die for even one second, and Nagumo and Gaku just spawned in to get their respective one hits in lol,Gaku was resurrected to hit Sakamoto one time smh.Besides that Roku and Ichi are still great and Kagurabachi is back yay. Still need to read all the newbies tho,I'm curious on how the magazine will look since quite a few series are petering
