If Togashi was in good health and everything, I would've expected HxH to be a 700ish chapters series. I know he can't do that, of course. That's just a guess on what he could have planned, just a maybe. Not a "Yeah of course he will do that!".

Tanimoto’s editor should’ve told him to separate the eye powers and give it to the female MC or Shuli. That would’ve been far more interesting to make them very dependent on each other.

Re HxH: no manga or story feels good or complete unless the author completes it by their own hand in its intended entirety (which in HxH’s case means getting answers on the DC, Don Freecs, Gyro, and everything else that was set up). Anything less is unacceptable and depressing. The only sub optimal but survivable solution is to finish a story with another author but it still will hurt (which is why I was very disappointed in togashis 3 endings response which I inferred as him saying he won’t leave notes or tell the story to some one to complete). A successful manga that people are invested in, like any story, must be completed no matter what. It’s why the biggest pain in WSJ (and hopefully stays that way so it doesn’t happen ever again) is Act-Age’s author doing what he did and getting the beautiful story canceled.

Has Togashi ever said that HunterxHunter's "intended entirety" was answering those questions?

He has said Gyro has a role to play both in the manga (saying him and Gon meeting will be monumental) and I believe people said he has said that he will play a role in something else.

Either way him introducing all those elements and intentionally not exploring them would be incredibly disappointing and poor storytelling imo. Originally I could understand not getting to deep in the DC and having the twist being everyone gets killed as humanity may not belong there but the inclusion of don freecs means someone like ging needs to survive and answer the questions togashi set up re Don. It’d be poor story telling otherwise.

The time that I was in a hurry to finish the ranking before going on vacation is the time with the most ever chapters to review...

1. Quit Laughing, Shijima: I didn't expect to have to put it at first place, expecially because I wasn't the biggest Horikoshi fan. It is clear though that he came back with a story he wanted to tell, and this genre shift was beneficial to him because some parts were true to the definition of horror genre. This was scary, adrenalinic, emotional and everything in between, with a side of political that I always like. If it is a tease for a future new series, they already got a curious reader here!*
2. Akane-banashi: The first page is already hype material. The rest is a celebration of one of the greatest villains that ever grazed the pages of Jump. Since last chapter, I suspect he plays a part in the breakup that triggered the whole story, and no redemption arc will save him for being a despicable creature in my eyes (the last famous words...).
3. Ichi the Witch: To chime in the recent discussion about the recent loss of quality, I also found it less interesting in the latest weeks and moved down the series accordingly, but I always thought that the strongest point of the series was not the (remarkable) world building, of the (remarkable) charisma of the cast, but rather Ichi and his hunter instinct in a world of magic, that has never been toned down after so many chapters. Case in point, this very chapter, that in fact is rising up the ranks.
4. Roku's House of Oddities: A funny chapter, with the classical setup of the normies finding out the quirkiness of the supernaturals house. They reacted quite well and helped setup various funny jokes, expecially the perfect octahedron that Altra accepts as a shy animal would do. All that's left now is to pray for the safety of that V-Tuber in Botswana.
5. Kagurabachi: After all these chapters, I've come to the conclusion that Shiba is one of the coolest sidekicks that I can find in any series. His power is perfect for surprises of any kind, and he can overturn every situation in the span of a single panel. It is better to have him as a friend rather than an enemy (actually, how cool it would have been if he started the series as a villain, eventually turned face and made an unexpected return helping the heroes in an impossible situation? Lots of Phoenix Ikki potential here).
6. Ultimate Exorcist Kiyoshi: I liked a lot the beginning, when they introduced Kiyoshi with all his accolades like if he was a superpowerful character who is making his debut... but he is actually the protagonist we know from chapter 1. As for the case, we have a prime suspect but in my opinion the cuprit was the friendly teacher.
7. One Piece: After 1190 chapters, Luffy is still being told that he is not yet "King of Pirates" material...is there any other manga protagonist who has to live with such an humiliation? He can find some consolation in the following pages, expecially the one with all the Roger crewmates who see a great potential in him.
8. Drawn to the Fire: Of course we can't not talk about the sudden flashback as a signal for the possible axe, but the story itself was quite good, and reminds me of those NBA stars who complain that their teammates don't want to train as much as them. Natsu has to face the tragedy of being a prodigy and feeling that his so-called friends are putting distance from him. Much like in Days of Diamond, except I had to quit that series because the psychological pressure was too much for me to handle.
9. Shinobi Undercover: It's a bad day for old fighting legends with both arms in Jump. The chapter was not exceptional but nice, although I don't think that Op has really the time to go through a lenghty digression about squads hierarchy while they have a crisis to solve.
10. Someone Hertz: A good chapter for the standards of this series, where a character that I don't remember at all returns, and is a nice character, so I'd better remember him next time. Makes sense for Mimei to be worried about his rival status as he better produce some results soon. "What's a clothing store that's way too cramped like?" "Customers can't distinguish you from your own clothes, and the only way to get out is to be bought off with your t-shirt".
11. Cannon Master: Still good, but I don't understand where the last guy comes from. Was he inside the enemy inside the Regilith? Is he a friendly rival or another foe? What does he want from the protagonists? Actually, now that I think better about it, his introduction gave me something to look forward to next chapter.
12. RuriDragon: The battle part is probably already over, which is a good thing. What happens this week is mostly exposition and setup for what comes next, so there isn't much to comment. Looks like we are heading towards a training arc.
13. Witch Watch: After the emotional flashback that took the series to incredbile heights, the (final?) battle is beginning but there isn't much to comment yet, as only one minute in-universe has passed. The most interesting part is the plan that Morihito and the others are hiding, but we don't have enough information about it yet.
14. Under Doctor: I thought last week was over for this story and it was the best point to stop it anyway. This week was just a reiteration of everything that last chapter already achieved, plus a nice family dinner. And I think that Samejima faked to put his trust on Haji for the operation, to avoid being the one in charge of such a risky surgery.
15. Animal Signal: Despite the usual mediocrity, this chapter was better than the norm because of the cute story and some occasional gag. It appears to me that now the animal knowledge of Tsubasa is well recognized and that Kokone's mind reading has lost its usefulness as a plot device.
16. Nue's Exorcist: Another chapter of blows being exchanged, with a big reveal at the beginning that wasn't actually that big, I mean this new information doesn't move the balance that much. The fight will probably end next chapter and maybe we'll get a flashback exploring what really happened.
17. HunterXHunter: Every time I think I am close to the end of my reading session when I stumble in a chapter of this and I reaize I amonly halfway through at best. Last week was better because it was more action, but even this time I was able to follow it more or less and I think that the prince's plan will eventually fail for some reason nobidy is thinking of at this moment.
18. Hal Formula: If the attack doesn't succeed at the very first turn, then it's almost game over? Just another proof that motor sports are among the most boring. Even later, when the choice between attack left or right is resolved by choosing to go middle, well...it's hard to get excited (to motor sports fans: no need to get heated, I am talking only for myself here).
19. Me and Roboco: I think that the grandpa can be a funny character if used well, but this chapter didn't do much in his favour. I'm sorry for Bondo not realizing that a statue made of solid gold is a way better present than anything else he was given in this chapter (and probably in life).
20. Sakamoto Days: Strange way of making us buy that attacking one at once is better than attacking as a team, after all those years of Jump mangas enforcing the opposite. In fact, the chapter resulted bland as nothing actually happened.
21. Class 2-B Hero Destroyerz: Still not a very effective miniarc, especially because they shouldn't fight between each other and nobody points it out. There isn't much to drive home except for the new cool looking gifted character, and the message that Sorachi wanted to deliver didn't strike as powerful as he was able to do with Gintama.
22. Kinato's Magic: We are clearly axing here, and aside from the fanservice scenes that are starting to look more like Sailor Moon transformations, I didn't find Kinato convincing enough to make her collpase after she got the upper hand for the latest chapter and a half. Ok for winning with a Talk no Jutsu, but to make it succeed it needs more effort.


*by the way, thanks Horikoshi also for making a Jump one-shot being published to Mangaplus thanks to your fame. I was trying to tackle all the translated one-shots of this year, but I already got stuck at the one from issue #3, that nobody apparently translated. Do you know if eventually every Jump one-shot gets its english version, and how much time does it take? N-not that I would like to do a one-shot ranking or anything...

Are you saying he's going to pull a Slam Dunk? In Shonen Jump #27 of '96, which featured the final chapter of Slam Dunk, there was a message at the end of the chapter; in chapter 276 it said on its pages: "End of Part 1". And then in volume 31 that information was removed, and so the series ended once and for all.

Are you suggesting Togashi do the same thing? Tell the readers and editors of Jump that it was the end of Part 1 of the manga and then never continue the story, only mentioning in the last volume that the manga is over.

I still haven't gone fully into the quality of the translations for Manga Million, so they may be shit based on the very loud conversation about the use of AI (despite their claims otherwise), but let's see. At the very least, the two major completely untranslated series that have a chapters available now are:

With more recent news, they've made it clear that they intend to complete every series currently up there as well on an ongoing basis, presumably by the end of 2027 when the website disappears or becomes a paid subscription, or something? That end part isn't clear. But the fact that I'll be able to actually read 201 volumes of Kochikame is bonkers. Now I just need to binge all the chapters from the 70s that are now available!

Speaking of old series - it's taken longer than I wanted but I've caught up to the end of 1984 in my WSJ journey. The Golden Age is officially underway! Or at least technically. I get the sense this was the first true year of transition and it wasn't felt as much in the moment. With the ending of pre-Golden Age series like Cobra, Cat's Eye and Dr. Slump, and the continuation of Fist of the North Star, the very start of Dragon Ball, and Kimagure Orange Road's debut, that's when it starts to feel like a shift from the Old to the New.

Overall thoughts based on their 1984 chapters:

1. Captain Tsubasa (+1) is so good, guys. Funnily enough, it gets the exact same average rating (80.48) in the 1984 chapters vs the 1983. Talk about consistency. Plenty of really entertaining games throughout this year's chapters and since it's the proper middle school showdown between Tsubasa and Kojiro coming up, I expect it to also be up near the top again - unless there ends up being some big improvements for other series and some surprises in 1985 (I hope).
2. Fist of the North Star (-1) is still very solid. The introduction and exploration of the brothers as an overarching plot line is the exact thing the series (and Ken) needs to keep it feeling fresh and relevant. It sometimes borders on repetitive in how the actions pans out, and the female character portrayal remains... of the time, let's say, but it's still a confident, easy read.
3. Silver Fang - The Shooting Star Gin - (+3) has really won me over. The shift occurred in this batch of chapters from the human characters being the main POV to the now talking dogs. I thought it would be jarring and silly but it's honestly so easy to buy into it and Yoshihiro Takahashi does a really solid job of giving distinct personalities to the cast. Even though they're all dogs, this feel like the most straightforward battle shonen in the sense that I can imagine the cast as humans all fighting each other, full passion and all. Genuinely surprised by how much I'm smitten by this.
4. Kimagure Orange Road (NEW) is one I've been looking forward to getting to, and I like it. I will say, it's extra messy that the love triangle is between two "delinquent" girls in the same friend group. Around 40 chapters in however, and the routine is becoming a bit stale so I'm hoping there's a good shake-up in the dynamics and it doesn't just repeat itself from here.
5. Cobra (-2) ends! The last two volumes are just fine. I was really hoping for a wrap-up that felt conclusive to Cobra's arc and everything that's come before in the series, but it felt like more of the same in terms of scale and importance which is fun to read, I guess? But ultimately it's not the ending I wanted from the series. Even so, it's still one of the legacy titles of the pre-Golden Age era, and I can see why, even if it wasn't always to my taste.
6. Dragon Ball (NEW) only has two chapters here, but something tells me it'll become a big deal. Even if these specific chapters to kick off are mediocre.
7. Cat's Eye (+1) wraps up and... it's kind of whatever. A less than special ending. Technically the one-shot that wraps up the entire story came out in 1985 but I've already read that too and it was legitimately awful with the trope it employed at the final hour and the way it does a total disservice to Toshio and Hitomi. Compared to how fun some of the earlier stretches of the series were this is a decent but overall disappointing conclusion.
8. Black Angels (-3) dropped the imitation Fist of the North Star set up and for the better. Though what's followed has still been a step down than everything before the big shift/timeskip. The new cast is also just fine, but it doesn't have the same energy, and some of these final arc villains lean more into the goofy more than I'd want. Hoping it ends in a satisfying way with the 1985 chapters.
9. Dr. Slump (+1) wraps up with a final chapter that actually had be believing that I enjoyed the series. There were parts in the last two years where it landed more gags than it missed, but on balance it wasn't a fun time up until the prospect of these characters being put in the shelf suddenly felt quite a sad prospect. Weird, but Toriyama really did not take a break before shifting to Dragon Ball, did he?
10. Man's Hill (NEW) is not a good Masami Kurumada manga. He mentions several times that this was his dream series all along, the one he most wanted to write. He did it because he wanted to, and it was rejected by audience because no one else cared, myself included. I don't know if I'll check out the revival modern continuation or not, but this feels like the most by-the-numbers series from him, and he's not exactly a writer with the most depth to him to begin with. It's the Build King of the 80s - it feels like a series dreamed up by a 13 year old, written by someone several years older than that age, and in the end it's still only as good as the series the younger self conceived it do be.
11. Baoh (NEW) is an improvement from Araki with his second serialisation, in that he's gone from the worst series of the 80s to the third worst. Artwork and paneling has gone up, though the premise of the series and how it plays out chapter-by-chapter doesn't feel like a proper serialisation. It's occasionally interesting at a distanct but still super amateurish and much less than you'd expect from what eventually comes from him.
12. Wing-Man (-1) remains throughly NOT FOR ME. This would be my Nue's Exorcist if I was reading the magazine in 42 years ago, for sure. Whenever it goes to the Podreams world it's really... really not good. Funnily enough, the last couple of chapters of the year after it wrapped up the latest arc there had some promise. Relative to the rest of the magazine though, even at its best it's still one of the worst for me.
13. Kinnikuman (-) remains unbearable for basically every chapter in the Dream Chojin Tag arc, possibly my least favourite major story arc in a WSJ series of notable length? An absolute chore to get through, and even after all these years the artwork remains pretty atrocious, flat, and the character designs rarely ascend beyond dumb. BUT (and there's a big BUT), as is pretty clear by my chapter ratings, Survivor Match for the Kinniku Throne arc is several degrees better and I was immediately taken back in. Will it all fall apart again? Most probably. But I'm willing to be won over, especially in the last arc for the main run. I want to find some enjoyment from the series before it's too late.

I'm expecting 1985 to be the first year that feels like the Golden Age from beginning to end, thanks as well to series like City Hunter and Charge!! Men's School upping the manly GARRRRR-ness which feels distinctive of the time. Unless those two series flop hard, I'm hopeful that it'll be my highest ranked year of the 80's, topping 82's admittedly not that amazing 67.08 average chapter rating.

I would definitely not feel satisfied with HxH ending in this arc, i can't imagine mysel being promised the Dark Continent and getting satisfied with the manga ending in a "war" between a bunch of whatever prince & princess and their bodyguards inside a boat.

That's the thing though, literally every single arc in Hunter x Hunter ends with an anti-climax. Togashi always builds to something only to yank it away or take us a different route to a similar result.

• Hunter Exam: The final phase of the exam wraps up while Gon is knocked out, everything is explained after to him and he ends up being a hunter (but it works because it sets up the next mini-arc and adds a sense of mystery to the resolution).
• Zoldyck Family: The gang arrive to rescue Killua from his family; Killua rescues himself with ease and they leave (but it works because it establishes Killua's relationship with his father and shows his strength even after not becoming a hunter).
• Heavens Arena: Gon and Killua leave the tower and don't continue climbing the floors, instead stopping when Gon loses to Hisoka (but it works because he got a punch out on him and it feels like a minor, personal victory).
• Yorknew City: There's no big final fight between Kurapika vs Chrollo, or extermination of the Spiders, or even in the fight between Hisoka vs Chrollo at the very end, and Gon/Killua are set free by them as well (but it works because Kurapika chooses not to fully embrace to revenge thanks to his friends, Chrollo/Spiders still feel at a loss but they continue to have a presence beyond Yorknew, and for Gon/Killua it helps transition smoothly into Greed Island while was being set up for the past few arcs).
• Greed Island: The climax comes in the form of a dodgeball game, and if anything the training of Gon/Killua is more important than the actual game itself (it mostlyyyyyy works because is helps with the tonal shift in the upcoming arc and preparing them for what's to come - though I do think Genthru is easily the weakest villain of the series who feels like an afterthought in the final portion).
• Chimera Ant: Netero vs Meruem instead of Gon being involved, the way Meruem is taken out afterwards plays out quite straightforward despite how big his presence and power was, and Gon loses his powers by succumbing to his grief regarding Kite (which subverts expectations of a big shonen war arc, allows Meruem and Komugi's to wrap up in a gentler way, fitting for their relationship, and plays into the theme of how the humans still have the potential to crush ants despite how outmatched they seemed).
• 13th Hunter Chairman Election: The various rounds of voting lead to Parriston winning, only to immediately quit and let Cheadle win instead, even though she wasn't in contention for 2nd place in the end, while Alluka's powers introduced in this arc act a solution to Gon being on the brink of death, and his whole reunion with his Ging being incredibly sudden (but it caps off Parriston's want to play one more game for the fun of it and in one panel reframes his entire character, it allows Killua and Alluka's journey to Gon to be were the tension lies, and the unplanned reunion for Gon and Ging makes it feel more authentic rather than some obvious written-in-the-stars moment).

My personal theory is that the Succession Contest arc will also have an ending that is equally as anti-climactic as the previous arcs, in terms of who the winner is or how it gets there and/or the expedition to the Dark Continent shortly after will prove to be a massive failure and is cut short because they are wholly unprepared and overpowered by what is actually there. Just like the entirety of Hunter x Hunter and its main theme: the journey is more important than the destination. The set-up for the dark continent is there for the succession contest to be the actual event of more narrative significance where so many character arcs will be resolved or put to an end for good (Kurapika's revenge, Hisoka vs Chrollo, the fate of the Spiders as a whole, the impact of the Kakin Empire's new ruler for the rest of the world, and how it will likely set up Gon getting his powers back and his fated meeting with Gyro), while the Dark Continent will remain just that: dark, unknown, too much to handle.

Or it could play out different, and Togashi could play out the anti climax in a whole other way - but trust that things aren't going to play out based on first instinct for the succession war and the Dark Continent afterwards.

ANYWAY, issue #37/38. I wish it was Bleach's re-debut, but it's not. Good issue though, those at the top were really strong this week.

It's so funny having Hunter x Hunter chapters this batch that are just straight forward advancement of the plot without the complicated balance being considered, thanks to Benjamin's duo timers of his demise making him want to take out everyone within the next 10 hours. Obviously, this is all going to backfire and there will be a rebound, and in the end I suspect only Benjamin, Tyson, and possibly Halkenburg (for real) will be the actual deaths here. Camilla will likely out-counter the curse on her, and I currently have Tubeppa as a high candidate to win the end (which also feels like a Togashi possibility), so I feel she'll make it out of her death sentence this chapter. Stuff is really happening.

Quite Laughing, Shijima was throughly excellent. Horikoshi's still got it. Excellently paced, great horror page turns, and all the revelations and hints come together in a tight, cohesive way, while the artwork is up there at the best he's ever produced. As I was reading it I kept thinking that it felt like a perfect story for a one-shot... and then those final few pages now make we want a second chapter immediately. I have a feeling this could do well in the surveys as well. If it did have that sort of future, I hope the series does what was more common in the past and have the one-shot be a prequel to a new series with a different name and not feel the need to re-tell this exact story as chapter 1, cause it already nails it perfectly.

Can't say I'm one of the Ichi the Witch skeptics right now - this new arc being set up is a lot of fun, and that invisibility majik feels like a little bonus destined to be captured by Ichi before the arc is over. One Piece and Sakamoto Days delivered on an energy that has been missing in both series lately, SD in particular needed this sort of high calibre showcase in this wrap-up stage. Ultimate Exorcist Kiyoshi is also nailing this new arc, kind of love the set-up and comedy this chapter. And I'm choosing to ignore the death sentence of Cannon Master being #10 in the table of content because this was another throughly good chapter and it deserves to live so bad. : - ))))

thanks Horikoshi also for making a Jump one-shot being published to Mangaplus thanks to your fame. I was trying to tackle all the translated one-shots of this year, but I already got stuck at the one from issue #3, that nobody apparently translated. Do you know if eventually every Jump one-shot gets its english version, and how much time does it take? N-not that I would like to do a one-shot ranking or anything...

They don't really translate one-shots unless it's a real big name doing them like with this week.
Most one-shot translations that are done are scanslations from manga fans such as myself. I kinda wish that the one-shots do get officially translated as it could be a fun way to help test the waters to see what new authors we would love to see join the line-up of Weekly Shōnen Jump in the West, especially since there are plenty of untranslated one-shots that I would love to see get translated, myself.

Black Angels (-3) dropped the imitation Fist of the North Star set up and for the better. Though what's followed has still been a step down than everything before the big shift/timeskip. The new cast is also just fine, but it doesn't have the same energy, and some of these final arc villains lean more into the goofy more than I'd want. Hoping it ends in a satisfying way with the 1985 chapters.

That transition predated Fist of the North Star.

Dr. Slump (+1) wraps up with a final chapter that actually had be believing that I enjoyed the series. There were parts in the last two years where it landed more gags than it missed, but on balance it wasn't a fun time up until the prospect of these characters being put in the shelf suddenly felt quite a sad prospect. Weird, but Toriyama really did not take a break before shifting to Dragon Ball, did he?

Because Ichi has way better toc performance than Kagurabachi, group covers have a tendency of being more about performance within the magazine than volume sales which is why Roku is already where it is for example, also Ichi is a way more reliable hit for the magazine than Kgb.

Issue 37/38:

1. Hunter x Hunter
The most interesting thing about Benjamin is how much he acts both as an inspiring hero ready to sacrifice himself and his family for the country and greater good, but also as this representative of everything wrong about the military -- angry, power hungry, self justifying and violent. He's not a monster because he's as human as the other princes, but he certainly represents an evil that disguises itself of justice and that is a constant threat to several countries across the world and across the ages.

2. Nue's Exorcist
Kawae sure loves this fight's theme of what means to be human. Yagyo keeps being the classy swordsman and Shitotsu is leaning more and more into being a dragon. The reveal about her origins isn't surprising, but it's coming at an interesting moment.

3. Ruri Dragon
In Ruri fashion, we go from the hot blooded battle to a super casual conversation with this crazy dragon that just tried to kill our heroine. The scolding was deserved! But more important than dragons, here are the cats. The story transitioned super well from the action back to the usual wonderful slice of life pacing Shindo mastered.

4. Animal Signal
Hey, the president is back. I hope we getting more chapters involving several anime, the story about the canary girl was pretty cute and I have to praise how they always find a way to dress Kokone in a huge variety of outfits.

5. Roku
I don't blame the friends for being jealous, Roku's family is great and this was a good showcase of their unique points.

I liked Shijima as an oneshot about that aspect in japanese culture about the pressure of ignoring obvious social issues, but I don't think I loved the story itself that much in universe. It's alright, but the pacing wasn't there and I think I would be more excited if this was a longer first chapter of a dark hero manga. Also, is Drawn to the Fire starting to wrap up? Didn't expect a full backstory for the co-lead like this here.

No. But he will finish succession war, and to me thats the biggest W ever. I'd like to atleast get a bit into dark continent too, but i don't honestly care or thinkg we will see even the last 100 chapters of what he planned for HxH's end
