God Valley movie is fascinating. A lot of people wanted it but I genuinely didn’t think they’d make a One Piece movie without Luffy and the Straw Hats. I think it has potential to do really well internationally but I think it actually has less commercial potential than Film Red did in Japan itself. It’ll be genuinely interesting to see how a canon One Piece movie does though. At this point, I think Demon Slayer might be one of the most influential anime ever made LOL

Kagurabachi’s covers really do make a great job at selling its characters and visuals. Honestly I dropped that manga at chapter 3 and never picked it up ever again years ago, also because I thought it was going to get axed, but I have to say those covers are making me wanna give it another try.

Surely the narrative must have gotten better. I remember it being very boring.

Issue 39:

1. Hunter x Hunter

Everyone knows Togashi is great at writing villains and chapters like this are absolutely exciting just on the premise. I didn't expect to get Tserriednich's perspective so soon for a full story and it's crazy how much it shows his charisma and human reactions to even the mundane stuff, like how much he dislikes Benjamin or how he sides with his crew.

Tserri is one of the most despicable monsters in the HxH universe, yet I was cheering for him there and just kept getting more excited with the idea of seeing future interactions with the characters in the lower decks. I guess it's fine to support evil every once in a while.

2. Nue's Exorcist

"Gakuro lost everything!", this chapter is about how his journey so far only gave him everything. Sure, he may not have Nue's powers anymore, but the strength he has comes from the experiences and friendships he made all the way. Zenno being at the center with Nue is the perfect representation of this as this powerless guy was who gave Gakuro the courage to take a step forward and open himself to others.

It's a cathartic chapter about how these family bonds weren't broken with Takuro's death and now they can end Yagyo, the monster that used to be a man who decided to give up his own humanity for power. Gakuro looks back and sees everyone, it makes so much sense that this is the kind of power that protects a soul. Shonen manga doing shonen manga right.

3. Animal Signal

Animal Signal needed a chapter like this to tie all the slice of life individual stories we had so far. Introducing the pyramid we now know the current cases are supposed to be simple and have the expectation to go on bigger adventures later.

But what it does well is show how much Kokone and Tsubasa are important to each other beyond a surface level. They both have their insecurities, but found in each other someone who is willing to understand them fully, both their weak and strong points. It's a chapter that makes Tsubasa feel more like a heroine and he's a damn good one at that.

4. Someone Hertz

It's usual Someone Hertz, which usually means it's cute and fun, but having Mimei and Kurage face each other in a radio room is the kind of scenario that good romcom authors can find to make a situation feel extra special. Details like Kurage's red ears just bring that charm that makes this so good.

5. Hero Destroyerz

Stats were funny and I'm happy to see them adventuring and out of the school for once.

As for others... Did Cannon Master jump the shark for anyone else? I just know now we'll only see humanoid enemies as main villains going forward, that Ur reveal feels way too soon and the pacing was absolutely terrible. Are the surveys bad enough this is already a desperate gamble to survive? And it seems like I was wrong about Drawn to the Fire surviving another batch, it's clearly over. If you slapped a The End in this week's Under Doctor, it wouldn't feel out of place as well. Maybe everyone got told to fight harder for their survival now.

Now for Kinato:

After how bland Shadow Eliminators was, I didn't have a lot of hope for Amemiya as an author before I read his Maou oneshot. There I saw a way more interesting side of him that felt authentic to his interests and while simple, did characters and themes well enough it was fun.

Kinato started well. Again with a basic premise that leaned a lot on narou novel tropes and concepts, but had a fun start by focusing on making the characters enjoyable and mixing comedy and action well. That's enough to be a fun manga, maybe it could even grow into something more interesting over time like Black Clover and Fairy Tail did.

Yet over time, Amemiya kept slipping into bad habits from Eliminators. I'm not sure if survey votes were bad, but the impression I got is that he kept trying to be more mainstream and follow too much what past hit works did. Kinato lost his support focus too fast and became a boring version of Deku fighting wise, the new characters introduced felt like walking archetypes that only existed because characters with similar functions existed in other series (did we need that terrible rival?), the comedy became more sparse and boring while the action didn't have interesting scenarios to back it up.

The Majo arc did bring back some qualities of the beginning. I don't believe for a second a current Jump editor would tell him to ramp up the fanservice to survive. I see it being more likely that votes were bad enough he knew this wouldn't last long and just started doing whatever he wanted again... and that's when he's more enjoyable. Not because I need fanservice in every manga, but because authors tend to be more interesting when they have their identity on screen.

Shadow Eliminators improved when it felt more free after the axe notice and this happened again with Kinato. It's easy to say now stuff like how he should have kept Linae in the story instead of introducing so many derivative side characters, but more than anything, no need to be a mainstream battle manga like Jujutsu Kaisen or Hero Academia. I hope to one day read an Amemiya manga that feels completely genuine.

And with today's chapter, Nue's Exorcist is officially one of the top 100 LONGEST seried in Shonen Jump!!

One of my favorite stories in Jump history. Cushion manga released in a batch of 4 with two hit veterans, intentionally went into a niche direction and he's still years later doing his own stuff. Congrats to Kawae!

I'll throw out that Drawn to the Fire could possibly not end next chapter. It's a Jump flop manga, so obviously if the ending is just incoherent, that's just the way it goes sometimes since the axe waits for no one, but for a basketball manga, it would just be the weirdest structured final chapter I could imagine.

The third quarter hasn't even ended yet and I just can't imagine a serious basketball game in a manga not even attempting to do a fourth quarter cliffhanger, it'd be like an axed battle manga not doing a cliffhanger for the MC's final move or comeback during the final battle. If next week is the last chapter, then the third and fourth quarter have to be done in 19 pages. When you're rushing, you're rushing, but if you're trying to build drama or make a game feel like a completed arc, then I think bare minimum the fourth quarter would need to be two chapters (preferably more, but this manga is obviously dead in under 10 chapters so it won't get that).

I guess this one isn't as big, she could just be shoved into one panel at the end watching from the stands, but I also don't think the series can end before Mizuhara and Hina at least acknowledge that their promise has been/can be fulfilled now. The entire premise of this series is that Mizuhara wants to go to nationals to meet Hina again and that has not been acknowledged once during this final game. Obviously we can't do a super big multi chapter thing about it, but I don't think you can end an axed manga ignoring the main goal of it completely. Even the "and the adventure goes on" endings acknowledge that the MC is still going towards their goal. Again, she could be shoved into a random panel near the end and nod silently in approval after Mizuhara wins this game or something, but it just doesn't feel like it's ending next chapter to me (more like, 3-5).

I also don't want this to be mistaken for cope, because this manga pisses me off lol. If it did end next chapter, I'd be more than willing to just accept that Satosho completely dropped the ball when planning out how this final stretch would go.

I don't think the survey results are dire yet, just bad, but I feel like feedback showed that the people who liked the series really liked the fight art when the combatants are similar size, so the author decided to switch to humanoid enemy designs so they could do human v human fights more often. More "the smaller adjustments right before the desperate hail mary attempt" that axed manga do.

Considering how early it is and how the pacing is like this rushed 3~4 chapters in one, I just went with really bad surveys as a theory because they're basically ditching the manga's main unique concept. Maybe readers liked Bharat's fight more, but I think they may be getting the wrong reason for that. At least I want to see more monster battles, but focused on strategy instead of Ur brute forcing beams to destroy them.

We'll see how it goes.

Hunter x Hunter in top form this chapter. Decent issue otherwise but don't have much to say about it.

[Discomusic]

1. Akane-banashi: So this is the Rakugo of Zensho Arakawa, and it is very fitting for him. If how the people react to him and how he perceives himself are so different, in his mind it's like he became a Shin'uchi by accident, while in fact he indeed has great talent. His backstory is now worth exploring.
2. Witch Watch: When Shikima went "only a 100% Ogre could be a threat to me" I knew where this was going. But now ,instead of a 100% Ogre, we have two Ogres at 30% and 70% more or less...will it work anyway?
3. Roku's House of Oddities: How nice it would be to hang out with this group for a barbecue, curses and science club members alike. A nice Slice of Life feeling permeated the chapter, showing a world where humans and curses can live together and learn from each other. Plus, the title page was gold.
4. Kagurabachi: Short but very intense chapter, I was feeling the intense heat with them (probably the fact that it is a hot summer played a part). I just want that damn sword to be forged at this point!
5. Me and Roboco: Briliant parody this time, I love when it works out. All characters were great in their interpretations, and shot-out to Motsuo who didn't have to attend after school but chose to stay with the boys anyway.
6. Someone Hertz: Japanese mangaka love to write about the explosion of youth that is the cultural festival. It has to be an experience that you treasure for the rest of your life for real. Liked the chapter, but most of all I loved the readers request title page.
7. HunterXHunter: I enjoyed it this time, we all knew he survived somehow but we all wanted to know the "somehow" part. If we look at this chapter alone he almost looks like someone we could root for, but in context we know he is a massive scumbag and we can't get behind him.
8. Ultimate Exorcist Kiyoshi: The protagonist continues to be a very cool Cross Paladin while it was obvious that the suspect wasn't the real culprit. He and his gang have been very well characterized though. My prime suspect is still the teacher from last chapter.
9. Ichi the Witch: The arc suddenly became a "find the McGuffin" quest, and I may or may not like it depending on how it goes. For sure it will make for a good chapter of the Ichi the Witch videogame.
10. Shinobi Undercover: Reminds me of Yumichika from Bleach when he reveals his true powers. So not 100% original, but well executed, I am rooting for him in this battle.
11. Hal Formula: This time the clash between the two philosophies has been exciting. The protagonist is a madman and I seriously worry about his health, both physical and mental; and the same goes for his opponent who may become mad at the end of this battle.
12. Nue's Exorcist: Not bad for a pure action chapter, that should also be resolutive for this fight. All the tropes for this kind of situation are in place, and I liked that Zenno is in the front row of the people important to protect, right next to Nue herself.
13. Class 2-B Hero Destroyerz: Some good gags and a good quest for an arc that I hope will be of some length. The legendary hero is clearly Vegeta, I don't expect anything different.
14. One Piece: I don't know how they can get out of this situation. I don't expect that the last hit actually worked, so everything we have to wait for is a Deus ex-machina that solves the stall for them. The bit with the owl is still the most interesting ongoing scene at the moment.
15. Sakamoto Days: The endless final battle continues, and the Order doesn't stand a chance after having been the group whose opponents couldn't stand a chance against for all the series. I have the feel that Suzuki is just stalling for time, waiting for the proper moment for finishing everything.
16. Under Doctor: A good, wholesome, heartwarming chapter that...wait, another one? Not even medical drama this time! Where are all the assassins that should come to make Haiji face his past? Glad they have been mentioned again at least.
17. Cannon Master: I am not sure about this turn of events. Sure, a revelation like was bound to happen eventually, but announced like this in Ur's face throws away all the dynamic of enthusiast scholar and insecure mentor after only 9 chapters. The exposition wasn't that good either, with that long "as you know" moment during the enemies dialogue. The series started great, but now it is showing where it has room for improvement.
18. Drawn to the Fire: Weird choice to have the rival think about the fact that they are starting to lose, flashback about it, find the motivation to overcome the protagonist and then get surpassed by him in the following action. His moment could have lasted more, or this is just main team propaganda.
19. Animal Signal: The chapter was not even that bad, but it seems to me that we are hitting the same button again and again. The series needs more missions and misteries, and less misunderstandings to enforce the relationship of the main couple; this has been done so many times already!
20. The Promised Neverland: Sorry but the special chapter didn't work for me. This girl is very confused about her feelings, and in the end the chapter is just her talking with Emma (ever the optimist) and changing her mind continuously. The seeds were planted for some good action and then nothing came out of it. Roboco did a better job of reminiscing what was the charm of this series and paying a proper homage.
21. Kinato's Magic: The villains surrendering just like that, and the enemy girl being converted in the span of an hug were the final nail in the coffin for me. It's a shame because the series started with potential and could have done a lot better had the quality stayed afloat, but too many errors were made during the run and there is a price to pay in the end. Amemiya can be happy with one thing though: this was already a large improvement over Shadow Eliminators.
