You don't need unique concept in sports lol

Maybe in the past, but all big shonen magazines published dozens of classic spokon in the last 10 years and the only one to do well was Blue Lock. There's clearly something wrong with the formula for this public. Classic ones can still do well in seinen magazines.

You only need appealing char designs, good character writing and interesting dynamics, good art too, that's the things fujos care (the fewer male fans too),

That's all manga in all genres and demographics though. lol

Not to mention that football is well known for being the sport that works the best when it comes to being over the top like Captain Tsubasa and Inazuma Eleven.

That's all manga in all genres and demographics though. lol

Yeah but sport series are all about character writing and appealing designs (Knowing how to draw matches is the bare minimum)

Meanwhile all these spokon I mentioned are actually getting axed. Blue Lock is the only major success, but if you want to add minor ones you end up with Red Blue and Suruga Meteor that sell 2K of physical copies and you might add Mizu Polo that is more of a comedy manga, that's 4 manga in a decade. Champion's only hit spokon is 18 years old and Jump can't find a single hit since Hinomaru in 2014.

It's clearly a genre in a much worse state than battle manga, enough to consider that maybe the classic formula of school club might be derivative to shonen magazine readers.

Not saying they have to copy Blue Lock, but if the four big magazines could only find Red Blue and Suruga Meteor in 10 years after trying dozens and dozens of spokon manga, maybe they should try shaking things up more. Clearly just having pretty boys in a school club doesn't work.

I know that shonen sports series are having a hard time achieving success these days, but I find it interesting that seinen series and online magazines seem to still be managing to create successful sports series. I wonder what the differences are between them.

Same reason why there's been alot of successful soccer manga in seinen. You can take time to water the plant over there and go full technical on the sports but for shonen, if you don't hook the readers by the first 5 ch, it's game over.

Jump+ has a couple successful sports manga running as well, one even got an anime recently and the other won a major award so is guaranteed to get one at some point. Young Jump has a couple long running ones in recent years as well (they might not be huge hits, but nothing from Young Jump is very big these days) so it's not long they can't find successful sports manga in general.

Feels like the fujoshi thing has been a massive factor for success of a series nowadays. Blue lock is the most successful sports manga since haikyuu and probably the only one to reach those heights and it’s littered with it. Starting to spread to battle series now too. Hell, Im not even sure a sports manga can succeed nowadays without it. I get it to a degree since women like it and it brings them in as readers and voters. Still kind of sucks as it strays from Shonen when non Shonen demographic determines things.

Its not like it never existed (look at Prince of tennis and freaking Keigo Atobe LOL) just feels like it’s spreading to everything now

Anyway if you complain, go blame your own gender. It is a well known fact that women fans is very dedicated and buy a LOT of merch. Just go to any anime collabs businesses and pop up shops, and 90% of the customers are female. Females also buy multiples of the same items to decorate their lucky bags (e.g. 26 can badges of the SAME design), buy a lot of plushies and the accessories, buy prize figures, buy acrylic standees etc. Their fanworks are also free advertisement for the work.

In a lot of "dead fandoms" (e.g. fandom whose anime and manga has long finished), it is the shippers wjo still continue talking about the work (well, their ships manly) for decades and create work surrounding it while the anime forums/sub filled with the normies are dead. And if you noticed the anime merch created (e.g. khr merch) you will see that it is so obviously catered to the females because they are the ones who mainly spend money. And do NOT forget in jjk, how maki and nobara merch are the ones who are always unsellable despite their perceived "popularity" in fandom. This is simply because the male fans tend to not buy.

Okay, checked Ura no Report chapter, and it's basically the one shot but with great art and the 2nd half reworked to be much better and have a proper climax!

Kuroki art is great as expected, it fits 100% with the series and a romcom, in fact going from the chapter to the one shot just hits you on how much his art enhanced Numa original one shot but you still can see Numa art on it, specially comedy faces.

It's pretty much a romcom, and similar to Dangers in my Heart 1st chapter, including the playboy type of guy constantly hitting on Anna but just like there, here it doesn't seem like he's actually a douche, also 2/3 other gyaru friends of Ura, there was in the one shot too.

Pretty excited to see how this will turn out

Wasn’t meant to be offensive in any way. And I do in fact place most of the blame the male readers today actually and my previous post implied such. My frustration is that the majority of readers are not engaging with any battle manga especially fantasy and action-adventure as well as the sports. It’s just been gag manga and romance. Because of that we’re losing out on good classic WSJ style series. The fujoshi series have existed but it’s usually part of the diverse offerings WSJ had. Now it feels like it’s just that for battle series and outside of One Piece and HxH, it doesn’t feel like there’s any attempt at the adventure portion outside of Ichi on the rare occasion.

Issue 39 2026:

1. Nue's Exorcist: Going ALL THE WAY back to Moroyoki's explanation of Hollow Weapons clashing just shows us how good and CONSISTENT this power system is, and we get another, another, much more prominent example of it: Takuro's own explanation. Let's see Yamato Rido's words during his fight wirh Gakuro:

"I can see it. The path I didn't even have a clue about, noatter how I trained, or how I longed for it. Mizuki. As long as you're here, my strength has no limits."

No matter how much he trained, he could not unlock his Soul Armor and actually approach a true captain's level, not until, in a crucial moment of battle, he thinks of his love with all his heart, and finally pries open that heavy door. The same way Takuro did it before, and the same way Gakuro is doing it now. Absolutely fucking brilliant yet subtle writing. Gakuro HAS found the answer that Rido was searching for. He has what it takes to be a true captain because ALL of the bonds he has created since the beginning are what drives him forward. Nue, Zenno, Suo, Shiroha, Shitotsu, Natsuki, Ishu, Koga, Tsujita, Machida, Moroyoki, Kathy, Lil' Kyoko, all of his classmates, even Rido himself- they are all the meaning that he needs to become stronger in the face of beyond impossible odds.
Which is the opposite of Yagyo- or rather, Yoichi? We see a small glimpse of his past as a human, talking to a man resembling that bearded due talking to Seina in Gekka's flashback, being asked on if he is truly gonna abandon his humanity. There's no need to see Yoichi's response, as Yagyo's existence is the answer. Abandoning all human connections, he is about to lose his life as a spirit too. And now I am beyond sure that the parallels between him and Gakuro are all intentional, that shot of his holding head Hunter with the left arm still attached is far too similar to Gakuro's own stunt last chapter (which isn't regenerating as the chapter actively shows us!).
Gakuro's armor is very reminiscent of his Soul Gear and its awakening during the Mitori Village arc, with the baggy pants and the hair remaining spiky, and boy does it pook good with that extra hint of Samurai armor. Everyone pushing him through that door and cheering him on was such a beautiful moment, and it makes me so want to see Takuro unlocking his own armor, helped by his children, in the past proper. There is so much complexity to his character, especially a tragic one the more you think about his background.
The whole sequence after is just the hypest it could possibly be, a quickdraw battle between a swordsman who has trained for presumably hundreds of years, perhaps even over a thousand, and a boy that in just a day had to regain all of his power back again (and if my theory is proven correct, I do not blame the Fujino/Raisei for trying to stamp out the Yajima completely, Gakuro is an absolute monster of growth) and has to rely on insticts, tactics and pure fucking grit to prevail. Which is exactly what happens here. Even without an arm, Yagyo completely and utterly outmatches a newly healed Gakuro in skill and power, so there's but one thing that can be done- Take the hit, break the damn blade, and swiftly and brutally slash the enemy. Just as he promised, he cut down the one that blocked his way. Quick, masterfully illustrated, and absurdly intense, ending with what is possibly the most Bleach coded spread in the series. GOD I cannot wait for next week!! 13/10.

2. Kagurabachi: Very meaningful chapter for Kunishige, especially the eye panels showcasing his true love being an hope so large that it overshadows all the pain in his life.

10. Kinato's Magic: A series that started faily fun and quickly devolved into bog standard boring battle shonen stuff. The Majo arc was an ok highlight on an overall messy and unprofound series. 5/10.

11. Cannon Master: Super rushed chapter, it stopped the current fight, introduced a new setup which the main characters are already aware of, and already has humanoid enemies which is lame as hell.
