1) The Promised Neverland: I totally forgot she was supposed to have lost her memories. Cute chapter, I'm glad they gave us some more on this character.

2) KGB: What happened to the other Mr Sushi's? I remember there being 7-8 of them. Regardless, he's got great supporters.

3) Kiyoshi: Oh no, they want to get paid for their work! How.. evil..? And they hide in their secret hide-out that has better waymarks than the average village. At this point, the thing that surprises me most is how clueless the teachers are.

4) Ichi: Maybe stabbing people in the face as an introduction wasn't the best move after all. I thought one of his arms was still real, but I guess he switched it out since. Fujimine scared? Yeah, right. So now we need three teams: one for the rescue, one to keep that thing busy and one for a treasure hunt...

5) Shinobi: You're fighting a psycho covered in vines, I don't think you need to worry about your appearance so much in these circumstances.

WW: I don't know who these people are, but they seem strong.

Cannon: Wow, this minister isn't beating around the bush, eh? No fear or judgement, just "Oh btw, aren't you also a living enemy weapon?" It's quite novel for a politician. Meanwhile the enemy is quite full of themselves, and the other fighters on the team are finally showing some hints of usefulness.
(Upon closer look, there are a lot of beast people in the crowd. I guess that explains why Ur doesn't really stand out usually.)

OP: I had not recognised Luffy in that colour page. Poor Gaban, he still thinks the laws of physics apply to these freaks.

Dr: Didn't he defeat you? You think an ordinary doctor could do that? Not a bad chapter, but I hope we'll be getting some action again after this.

Nue:
Dad: "Gakuro, is there a girl you like?"
Gakuro: "..." (Should I tell him about my ever-expanding harem, or..? Nah, let's just play dumb) "Huh?"

Drawn: This does not feel like it's ending. (Update: Well, that's a shame.)

Kinato: They tried to stuff way too much in this chapter. Having a grand finale + individual epilogues for all characters + closing narration in just 19 pages was quite ambitious, to say the least. Though I do appreciate them making an effort to wrap things up, it's a lot better than just quitting in the middle of an arc.

Roku: "A little embarrassing", really? Even Roku has been hit by the stupid. If someone tries to talk to you about the history of your curses, you listen. You want to know where they came from, after all. The cute ending saved it a little, but I really hope this doesn't become Agravity Boys 2.0 because that style of humour was never my thing.

Roboco: The skirt was a little on the nose, but as a parody it worked.

Akane: So the guy is a massive idiot then? Because I can understand this reaction the first or second time, but not after an entire career.

Sakamoto: Gee, what a surprise. I wonder if they will bother with an explanation.

Everything else didn't work for me.

The results of the ONE PIECE Character Popularity Poll "WORLD TOP 100 and more 2nd" final result are out

So Luffy is still coming out on top in total numbers (with a relatively small margin, I'd say), but Zoro is the most consistently popular in all regions.

I wonder what would happen if you left Japan out of it...

Final Rankings 101st to 1100th

I don't even know half of these people. (Why do some of them only have sketches?)

The lowest one I can place (aside from some nightmares) is the cat-thingy from Usopp's introduction story in spot 796.

4: Ultimate Exoricst Kiyoshi #105 – Once again, the Scarface homage for the colour page goes hard. Hahaha, The Devil Clash Boyz is so cheesy, I agree with Akari, but pretty expected for teenage delinquents lol. They even added a Z to the end for extra cheesiness. Kiyoshi is kinda in heels…kinda fits ngl. Anyway, blocking Kitano’s attack with a cool pose was funny. I have to say, they’ve only been around for one chapter but I quite like he DCB crew, they’re endearing, good intro for them tbh…hopefully we learn their names and they’re actual characters rather than just being there and that’s it lol. I quite liked this chapter, good fun all around.
I'm really surprised about the number of people who are only noticing just now that Kiyoshi is wearing heels. Like, they've been showing that off since the literal first page of the manga? And I'm not talking about some background detail, they have their own panel. There are 3 (three!) close-ups of his feet in the first chapter alone?

I guess some things just don't get noticed.

Some of the characters come from sbs or datebooks hence the scribbles

Tbh, i went back and looked and you're right and I have no real explanation as to why i just noticed it NOW lol. Tbf the first chapter was over 2 years ago at this point. My memory is horrible so it's entirely possible I already pointed this out when I first saw it and then forgot. Maybe his pose against the walls in the most recent chapter was just too cool for me to not notice. Anyway, good on him they look cool.

The Ura Files was cute, I wasn't expecting the boy to be a secret agent and it's a fun twist (makes it kind of like a blend between The Dangers Within My Heart and Shinobigoto I suppose?).

It definitely still has Numa Shun's general sense of humour but the characters seem a lot better here than Chojo where I hated basically all of male characters and especially Chojo himself. Hopefully it stays that way.

I liked the first chapter of The Ura Files, but not fully sold on it yet. Will have to see where it goes from here on out. Ura is definitely cute, but not sure how I feel about the secret agent angle. I suppose without that it really would just be The Dangers in My Heart + Oni. I also like how Kuroki is trying to emulate some of Numa's style with the reactions. With the rather on the nose naming scheme, there will definitely be characters based on Momotaro's companions from the folk tale, so I wonder if it will go harem and have them all be girls, or if one or more will be dudes. I at least assume they will all be agents from Momotaro's group.

On another note, this was probably my favorite chapter of Animal Signal so far. Probably the first time the humor landed for me, with it going pretty surreal, especially with that final gag. I wonder if wombat girl is going to join the main cast, or if her main billing in the color page really was just because she is the anima of the week in the chapter that happened to get a color page.

Issue 40:

Ura Files:

Was already a fan of the oneshot and wanted it to become a regular series, so here it is. There are some changes here and there to make it transition better as a long running story and I think it's all for the better. I do agree that this feels way more like Bokuyaba than the oneshot, with Momotaro being closer to Ichikawa.

It's similar on some levels, like the dynamic between a short boy and a big girl and how he thinks about violence, but the main theme is different in that instead of self care we got something with a societal angle. Ura is accepted in class, but in reality she still has fears and insecurities due to historical and cultural clashes. Momotaro iunderstands his own loneliness and through that he's able to empathize to the idea of someone feeling rejected or at least partially excluded from society.

Kuroki Yuushin is as amazing as you would expect. While he has his own style and can draw some amazing characters in that, he's also a talented chameleon that can adapt to any style and give it his own spin. Anyone who read David-kun knows that, but I'm glad already to see some cool style shift like in the action spread that leans more into that old school action.

Even better is that he's able to capture Numa's expressions perfectly. You can tell everytime he's going for something closer to Samon or Chojo. I feel like I'm getting all the Numa I need while still reading a manga by Jump's possible best artist. What more can I ask for? Loved it. And hey, if a ton of western fans don't like it, maybe it'll be a hit!

Drawn to the Fire:

More and more I think audiences aren't wrong for rejecting all these shonen spokon. Not that they're all bad, but what was new in this manga? What was unique to it? Did it do anything better than what I could find in all other dozen basketball manga already? Not at all. This is as basic as it can be. Why should the readers feel forced to keep something so derivative around?

Ditching all the romance was certainly a choice considering how much it was essential to the oneshot's popularity. The story sells a dual journey, but by excluding Tachibana, makes the premise basically irrelevant. She's the goal Keiki aims for, but we barely saw her to care, meanwhile our protagonist is mostly dull besides the few moments where he's being arrogant for some reason. Inconsistent characerization all around.

This story talks so much about the shared passion people have for something, but it feels like the author excluded the reader from feeling the same passion he has for basketball because he was unable to put that into a coherent story with interesting art. He just ran away and passed the ball to no one.

Votes:

1. Nue's Exorcist

This is the type of chapter your enjoyment may vary based on how much you learned to care about these characters and for me, of course, it's a lot. Not just because they're back but because of the last few arcs being basically the Gakuro solo show with him carrying all the weight of being the only one that can fight the Hyo. The catharsis of seeing everyone together protecting him finally shows all about how this arc is about these connections and how much the daily experiences they shared are the now the net that catches them when they fall.

2. Ura
Read above.

3. Hunter x Hunter

Tserriednich already had his fun testing his powers alone, but it's even more fun to test them on actual living targets now, it's like someone just having fun with the gameplay side of Metal Gear Solid. He's truly a genius murder psycho, but Togashi is also allowing the reader to bask in his glorious indecency. Really excited about the path he's taking and who he'll meet.

4. Animal Signal

I'm sure everyone involved with this chapter's creation had a ton of fun with the freedom they had and you could feel it while reading.

5. Someone Hertz

I recommend listening to the song when you read the chapter. The atmosphere while these two slept "together" is just the best that way.

Does anyone else think Cannon Master is basically over already? It's almost like I'm reading Alien Headbutt's final arc again. Meanwhile, Sakamoto Days keeps stalling as much as it can, but the Nagumo moments were appreciated.

Ura was fine I guess, but I didn't really care. I could see it being a hit though. DttF final chapter was pretty disappointing.

So Ura Files...is good. It's still mostly Shun Numa comedy which is always great. I still would have preferred Numa's art, but Kuroki definitely didn't detract from the series. It's still mostly funny. The main dynamic between Kibitsu and Ura is fine enough; I won't mind trying to invest in it. If I had to describe it in one sentence (without comparing it to a different romcom out there), I'd probably say: "This feels like Shun Numa flipped the roles for the male and the female this time." The female is probably going to be the fully fleshed out and developed character this time, and we slowly peel her down while the male is the one that changes a lot due to being around the female.

The main issue I had is that the male MC...feels off? I don't know how to phrase it because he's definitely meant to be in the same mold as Samon and Chojo, but it doesn't come off as that. Samon and Chojo were both annoying trolls to be around, but I never really felt that they crossed into pathetic asshole territory. Them having cool powers was humorous because it made you think "how did these bozos get so lucky to have cool powers" (and then you feel bad and sympathetic when you eventually learn that, it wasn't easy having cool powers for them). Kibitsu secretly being a badass agent feels whatever because he isn't flaunting it. Kibitsu isn't really a troll, he is just kind of pathetic. Maybe it's because the fact he's always been a loner bothers Kibitsu was revealed in chapter 1 this time instead of later makes me feel this way? I think this is why I said Kuroki's art doesn't detract from the series, instead of it improving the series. Numa's super troll faces helped really sell Samon's and Chojo's overconfidence. They genuinely believed in their own bullshit. Kibitsu doesn't and Kuroki's imitation of them don't reach the same level of infuriating when you seem them, which is the point, but at the same time Shun Numa's character writing doesn't really work if we already know it's just an act for the MC. The humor comes from the character genuinely thinking they have the right to act the way they do, so when they do an act of kindness, it also comes off as notable because it showed that they're capable of changing, they just willingly choose to be an annoying troll.

Other things, the female MC kinda felt just there the entire chapter. Teshi's dynamic with Samon stole the show in that chapter 1, Ippo was driving the plot along in the first chapter of Chojo which made her stand out and helped establish what her jokes would eventually be. Maybe because this time, it was told from Kibitsu's perspective instead of the female character's, but Ura just came off as the normal gyaru character from any high school manga. If Kibitsu wasn't constantly bringing up the fact she's an oni and that oni are allegedly dangerous, I don't think I could give you a defining trait for Ura. She's a glutton? That doesn't really feel as integral to her as Teshi's angel levels of kindness or Ippo's strength and conviction. I'm not asking Numa to make her one note, far from that, but in chapter 1 of Chojo and Samon, we got the thing that acts as the foundation for the female MCs character development and growth, but not really here. Unless it really is meant to be "she's an oni", which would then make her feel very shallow.

The series does feel trend chasy. In the past, I've praised Shun Numa for being really smart and genuinely studying his previous works to figure out what works and what doesn't, so that he can make the most refined version of what worked as a series. He still did that here, he correctly figured out that he should probably try a romcom for real instead of trying to force his series to become one later on when it was clearly not meant to be at first for example, but it also feels like he just took every basic trope that's currently trending in romcoms and meshed them together to make his writing work as a romcom. Later chapters will probably make it feel more distinct, but chapter 1 didn't feel like something only Shun Numa would write.

It'll still be good because Shun Numa is good, but it definitely feels like he traded a lot of his charm for a higher ceiling. Will it work? I don't know, this magazine is a fickle beast. Yuushin Kuroki is a really good artist and for the most part imitates Numa's art really well, he just can't reach the same absurd highs as the original, but that's nothing against him. There's a reason why it's hard to find perfect imitations for originals in general.

===

I brought up that not cliffhanging the fourth quarter for a penultimate chapter was weird for Drawn to the Fire, so it went with c) skip both quarters instead...

At this point, I think sports series need to commit to either dedicating the beginning to recruiting every main member of the team or just have the entire team right away and focus on developing towards the first game (and making it actually important, not just a practice or exhibition). Trying to do both just makes it half assed and infuriating when the axe comes because you get dumb thoughts like "if you introduced this teammate at the start, you might have saved the series" or "if you actually showed a real match and the fact you're good at drawing them, you might have saved the series" even though it's likely nothing could have saved the series. I don't think any of the newbies are really that interesting, but they certainly had more to work with than the literal NPCs the seniors ended up being. The series might as well have tried betting on one of these guys peaking the reader's interest because it certainly wasn't going to be because of Hana (I realized later that I was mixing her name up with Hina from Blue Box, kinda shows how little impact she had that I didn't notice that until the end). Satosho went out of his way to make sure it wasn't going to be her despite the fact she drives literally everything interesting about this series.

Aside from that, this just got more infuriating to read as the weeks went on. I think Satosho likes basketball, but it comes off that he's more a "highlights" kind of fan than a "full game" kind. He knows of the concepts of the game and that it's more complex than just "tall guy good, shooters good", but he doesn't really know how to actually show that and how to use the techniques of the game to make the game state more complex. An example, he knows screens and what you use them for, but he doesn't actually know how to use them to make the court move, which makes it harder to visualize the players' current positions since there's a lot of movement during set plays in basketball. It's really not as isolation focused as the series made it out to be and passing isn't really as simple as "get it to the open spot" or "find the person who's open"; the person receiving the pass essentially has their own movement tree to go through in order to actually get open.

After HAL Formula fails or succeeds (probably fails), I think I'm fine with sports series taking a hiatus in Jump. They clearly need to go back to the drawing board when it comes to them and I don't think the magazine always having an obligatory one is good enough justification to keep running subpar ones.

Really enjoyed Ura Files ch 1. I was expecting something akin to Lilim Holic, but it seems like it's gonna be a lot more versatile than something like that which is hella rad.
Never been a big fan of Numa's art-style, so honestly think him teaming up with Kuroki was a great idea.
I wish Kuroki was the writer tbh, but it's still great to see him back in Jump. David! is one of my all-time favorite Jump series, axed or otherwise, and the art-style works really well with Numa's writing.

The Ura Files it not for me but I can see that is well done. Numa is great. I am cheering for it because of Chojo.

PS: Numa seems to like strong women 😂

It might be best for Jump to leave the sports manga to Magazine.

Just realized both Harukaze and DttF had a character from the oneshot/on the cover that barely shows up in the actual series lol. That being said I think the sidelining of Aokaze was probably a bigger fumble because Hana was pretty clearly always going to be a goal point while in the oneshot Aokaze was clearly supposed to be one of the main characters.

While not a sports manga, I think we should call this The Mamayuyu as somehow nothing from the first cover was a recurrent thing in the manga: Mamama, the red jacket, the sword and Corleo's personality was completely different.
