I'd like to see Hori take another shot at sci-fi with his next series.
Honestly wasn't a huge fan of his recent one-shot. It was fine as a one-shot but the serialization hook at the end did nothing for me, just feels like it would turn into exorcist MHA.

It is kind of annoying seeing every single new series is a replacement for x when 1) the series it's "replacing" isn't ending in the next batch and 2) they only have superficial similarities.

Ruri Dragon and Ura Files aren't similar just because they both have a school girl with horns (and Mayori Academy on Jump+ definitely isn't similar to Ruri). Every comedy series with a slightly supernatural theme isn't similar to Witch Watch just because they have powers to cause hijinks (and almost none of them will come close to replacing the 30k hole Witch Watch is going to leave behind either). The entire reason why Witch Watch stands out is because it's distinct in Jump. You won't find any other series capable of telling jokes the way Shinohara does and the vast range of topics the jokes belong in. Shinohara's character writing is also A+ quality and is capable of making any character at the very least memorable, if not likeable. The supernatural background isn't the main reason why people have stuck around this long for the series, comparing them solely on the grounds they're supernatural comedies is missing the entire point of Witch Watch's success.

That's also why no one suggests to find the "Sakamoto" replacement. Sales wise, it already got replaced by Kagurabachi and Ichi. What Sakamoto itself actually offers (great and unique chroegraphy) isn't something you can just find anywhere. Hoping or expecting every random battle manga to be able to replicate that sense of style is just setting them all up for failure.
That’s a bit reductive of the point. Witch watch is a supernatural comedy with odd ball characters with unique quirks of supernatural origin who live together and get into comedic hijinks with occasional battle. Shinohara’s style is one of a kind no doubt but Roku definitely is a replacement for it as it has the same elements of supernatural quirky characters living together get into comedic hijinks with occasional battle. Roku’s author has different humor but to be clear that’s not reducing the series itself as a mere substitute

. What that means and how I imagine Saito and the editors view it, is that when Witch Watch ends, its fans will be sad right, but through word of mouth, people will hear about a series similar to witch Watch, read it, and become fans. Roku has similar elements that it becomes a spiritual and more importantly audience successor for fans of the series.

Similarly, it wouldn’t surprise me if jump, Saito, and the editors feel the same. They look for series that are good first and foremost, but a series that is similar but different of a successful series will likely make an editor think its good (along with a host of other factors of course).

Similarly, urs report has elements and tropes similar to ruri dragon (granted not as resonant as Roku and WW have), but I think audiences such as myself who liked ruri dragon, see those elements and hope for a similar like for ura.

People like me who love action adventure fantasy look for series with similar elements that we love (i.e. I love one piece and Kiyoshi has similar humor to one piece so I love kiyoshi. Likewise I’m hyped for grey keys because it’s big wide world is exciting and hopefully similar but different with OP)!

Yea, I was gonna add Dragon Ball to my list too
Even the pre-Sayian arcs, and post Cell arcs still have lots of sci-fi stuff.
Also, Dr. Slump has lots of sci-fi elements.
Some other notable axes leaning on sci-fi are Baoh, basically Araki's Kamen Rider, and Samurai 8. Also God Sider is a supernatural manga, but the mix of demons, angels and human armies (with their own tech and science) is such a big prototype to Shin Megami Tensei I think it's also worth a nod.

I think horikoshi is interested in more horror stuff at the moment so I don't think that is likely to occur unfortunately.

Never really watched or seen dragon ball in all my life so I genuinely cannot even day a dang thing on it. In fact I cannot for the life of me know any of its cast compared to other works I grew up with like One Piece and Fairy Tail (Before the latter went a way I disliked).

But is even possible to have a success within this magazine that is fully on sci fi? Cause I fear it will suffer a similar fate to sport series.

In other news, happy to see Kuroki again. I recall joining the forum around the time he debuted so he holds some good memories of reading David kun.

Oh wyld, managed to see the draws for the one shots yet? I can send the link that directs it towards it if you have problems finding it.

I don't see why not. It's not like their last battle hits are similar in setting. Ichi is a magic world, Kagurabachi has that retro AU Japan aesthetic, Shinobi is modern urban, Nue is at a small/medium city, etc.

No problem, this tends to happen more often than I want to admit.

Speaking of Giga, although i did not post the special chapters for To love Ru and Yuuna-san(Mostly cause i do not want to get banned from the site) i did manage to post the one-shots raws from Jump Giga Summer 2026 are here; enjoy:

Short story one-shot compilations:

Overall a much better selection that spring to be very blunt. I know for a fact Shinuki is not gonna pop a vein like he did before with spring this time around. What I mean by that is the fact the prior one was effectively Jump Giga Exocist edition basically.

Perhaps the Nue anime will be announced when the manga is nearing its final arc. Kimetsu no Yaiba, Kill Blue, and Mashle were like that.

No sweat. Guarantee you will have favorites there, as well as some upcoming authors that are worth cheering for. I recommend Send Smile mostly cause I still think the the author could have been an assistant for the likes Kazuhiro Fujita So unless someone proves me wrong that will be my personal bet.

Unlikely as all heck. I am no big fan of nue, but you do realise that this series is not going to end in a simple three years, just no. There are still way too much stuff that in all likelihood is going to take more or less three to four years in my opinion.

Anime is likely to get announce after the double issue with One getting an official anime announcement cover.

Look, I don't know how Nue is doing, but most current manga aren't managing to surpass 300 chapters. The only current exceptions are Iruma from Shonen Champion and Black Clover, and we saw how much Yuuki Tabata struggled to finish his manga, and Horikoshi too with My Hero Academia.

Most stuff on Weekly Shonen Magazine are surpassing 300 chapters just easily, including the romcoms lol

While your point has merit, and while I do not follow religiously like others here I know that its far from over based on what currently is going on there and the big bad of the nowhere near being at this point in time. So Hue is likely to get a cover for its anime and its popularity poll soon enough once the double issue is over and done with. Cause most here are already betting that Kagurabachi is the most likely candidate for it by a long shot and track record.

And there's another thing, have you considered that maybe Ichi will get an anime instead of Nue? After all, Ichi is almost as popular as Kagurabachi. An Ichi anime is more likely to be successful than a Nue anime.

You have to wonder what's the difference with WSM that most of their big authors can keep going for ages without issue (some even starting new series immediately after their old one ends) while so many of WSJ's authors struggle to keep up.

Are they just lucky that who ends up successful are fast artists? Is it WSJ's more competitive nature adding a lot of mental and physical stress? Or does WSJ just require a lot more work somewow?

That's something i was going to comment weeks ago but ended up not doing, that picking a Weekly Shonen Magazine issue after checking Shonen Jump is just a whole experience, the difference in the art quality is no joke, feels like Shonen Jump is not a magazine made to be read in digital high quality because it gets so noticeable how at least half of the magazine authors are either dying or struggling to keep the art just consistent while on Weekly Shonen Magazine it's eye candy, every manga is fully finished, from the newbie to the veteran that is already in the 4th/5th weekly serialization, you don't see rushed art, rough drawing lines, no one seems to be struggling, and not only that, the overall drawing skill level of WSM artists are just higher than WSJ, how the hell is Oh! Great drawing weekly manga at 54yo with that level? It's insane!

And its honestly not only WSM, Weekly Shonen Sunday it's not much behind WSM, the level of art is inferior but it's a perfectly fully finished manga magazine where no one seems to be dying just to release a chapter, even Fujita & Rumiko at their 60's (Rumiko is 68!!!) are still drawing weekly manga with perfectly fine art, meanwhile newbies on Shonen Jump are already struggling with their 1st manga lol

But don't get me wrong, i'm not putting the blame in the authors, this is obviously Shonen Jump fault, i'm totally sure WSM schedule is waaay better than Jump, something that gives it away to me is how some new series on WSM has already the date of the first volume being promoted in like, the 3rd chapter, meanwhile on WSJ we only get to know the first volume of a manga after 10 chapters, this for me shows how more in advance WSM authors are with chapters release than WSJ authors which allow them way more time to properly finish the chapters, i think the competitive nature of Shonen Jump survey is unfortunately one of the reasons too, i think the editors wants to have the fastest way possible to react when they see something not working, like when some development is not being well received they want to be able to quickly do something about that, which they can only do when there's not much chapters already done or being planned, if you guys understand what i mean. Anyway, i really feel like WSJ should work to fix this, the problem it's not the weekly format, it's the magazine schedule and time given to the authors, WSM is the perfectly example of how authors can work perfectly fine in the weekly format without dying all the time or ruining their artstyle just to release stuff on time.

The authors of Weekly Shonen Magazine don't suffer as much as the authors of Weekly Shonen Jump.
Well, you're right on that.

This is something really clear to anyone who reads many titles of all these magazines. It's insane how far behind Jump is art-wise, it has to be a mix of the editors not caring much about art quality and awful schedules, but it just looks bad in general.

Jump won't do it, but they should have a few more series in the line-up and give more breaks like WSM and WSS.
