Graykeith was fine, not bad but also nothing special. The translator concept is interesting in theory but I don't get the feeling this series is going to delve too deep into it beyond just being how they summon and use demon familiars. I do like the main girl being part Lamia and I hope we get more on that, Lamia are really cool fantasy creatures.

There is some nice scenery panels here so I hope it does some exploring to show off more of the world. It needs some sort of WOW factor.

Random question I have, is Kiyoshi set in a fictional place in Japan with a separate history like Kagurabachi? Or is it a completely different world altogether that's just similar to Japan?

The series very much runs on vibes and never delves deep into the specifics of how anything really works, so I don't recall if we actually fully know where it's set.

I believe its just meant to be japan. The city it takes place in is fictional, as are a bunch of locations, but there isn't much lore about them besides what is said during each arc. The main city is naraku city.

I’m actually reading city hunter right now and I see now that under Doctor is kind of following the vision of that episodic action format (and other oldies like HnK, Keiji etc.) it still sells well but do you think the big drop in sales and low ToC mean it’s on the chopping block next batch?

Also if SD and WW were to end before the axes start and with the new batch just starting (plus WSJ being down one series already), would they do an emergency batch or just rock 2 one shots until the next batch starts?

Shinohara is a slice-of-life author; he never gave much importance to the fights in Witch Watch.

Issue 41:

Greykeith: Maybe because I read the original oneshot back when it was released, but the actual first chapter didn't wow me. Of course this impacts this story more considering how the twist is the emotional climax of the chapter and what makes us as readers visualize how important Greykeith's work is.

The idea of breaking barriers through translation, how cultures are mixed and change through generations, etc. All of it is still neat and an interesting concept for a manga. Yet I kept thinking how I liked the oneshot's designs, framing and tone more and it was hard to not be a bit disappointed. Not that I disliked it and I'm sure I'll get used to the changes and enjoy the manga more when it covers new stuff.

Not a bad debut, but also not a home run. It'll have to work to get the trust it needs, but as long as it finds the right structure it can escape Under Doctor's struggle with identity.

1. Hunter x Hunter
I don't think they're intentionally contrasted , Togashi just likes to tackle some concepts from different angles. I'm talking about Meruem and Tserriednich, both introduced as their arc's Divine villains, virtually untouchable and blessed by the world itself.

Meruem over time lost that divinity as he was humanized through his virtues, capable of empathy, understanding and love, like everyone else. Yet Tserriednich in this batch lost his godhood and revealed his true self when he gave up on the mask that is his face, the moment he started wearing the hoodie and shades we got to see Tserriednich-The-Man. Not above everything, his personal desires are selfish and maybe evil, but they're still human -- disliking his brother, being attracted to Theta, having fun and, finally, fearing Hisoka.

This chapter completes the showcase of his character. Blessed by birth to have power, money and all his twisted desires fulfilled, behind that is a somewhat childish edgylord that is learning how fun it is to be challenged. Not a sadist, a masochist.

2. Nue's Exorcist
Gakuro decided to become a knight to protect all he loves, Shiroha chose to fight her own fate, all other heroines are deeply involved with the Hyo. How does Suo-senpai fit in here? She's a just normal girl.

This chapter gives a glimpse to what Suo may be: a hero. Someone who fights out of a sense of justice and love for everything and will never be forced into binaries when faced what to protect, fight for it all. Just a passing Kamen Rider.

3. Ura
Surprisingly, she did take that as a confession and it's a good setup to already have that in the air in the second chapter so Ura's actions towards Momotaro always have that as a background. He may or may not be interested romantically in her, so everything he does will now be seen through these lens.

4. Ruri Dragon
Are cats closer to humans or dragons? That was something I kept wondering through the chapter trying to guess if Shindo was giving a specific meaning to their interactions with Ruri. Not sure if that was the case, but it seems like they liked Ruri just for who she is, not because she's a human or a dragon specifically. Was that the point or I'm just overthinking. The cats were cute.

5. Hero Destroyerz
When they showed the dad with amnesia I had to stop reading a bit to laugh.

Great issue, I considered almost everything for the top 5 this week. But can someone tell Cannon Master's author the manga isn't ending in 2 chapters?

(I'm probably going to end up calling it Greykeys for awhile, it's going to take a bit before I adjust to Greykeith, if ever)

I've been keeping tabs on Natsuki Hokami since Higuma got the Jump Giga mini series. His style wasn't changing the world, but it invoked enough early 2000s vibes to me that I wanted to see what he could do with a full series. It wasn't the most original or flashy, but I still really enjoyed Higuma. You could say this batch was bioengineered in a lab to appeal to me specifically since two of the three authors I wanted to see come back the most did.

So with all that said, where does the series with GK as initials fall for me? Pretty good. It's 90% the one shot, which I said back then was my personal favorite one shot of the Jump Future Project, so I wasn't expecting to actually say all that much about the series but I have a decent bit I want to let out.

Hokami learned how to invoke style into his art really well. It was an exorcist manga with a modern setting so part of it is expected, but Higuma felt like the most vanilla thing ever when it came to creating its own identity. Greykeys though, it does thing like change text bubbles into scrolls to make the text look like old inscribed writing. It gives each language its own font to really drive in the fact that language is distinct and its own culture. It plays with speech bubbles when it wants to invoke terrifying demonic curses vs warm greetings. It really plays up the angle that any story can be something recorded in a book that's waiting to be translated with those simple changes. Even doing something like showing the Greykeys castle with a usually light sky (clouds that make the night sky not so dark) while everywhere else was a distinct night sky, helps illustrate the idea that these are two worlds with unique vibes.

I can easily see this fail to capture the attention of the general public and it flops before it gets a chance to really explore anything in depth. Nothing in this chapter really makes you go, "I HAVE to see what's the story behind it" and while I like the characters, I don't think most people are going to latch on to them on the level of say, Mizuo from Someone Hertz or Kokone from Animal Signal. It's also got a bunch of small details that make it feel really fleshed out and deliberate, but they're easy to miss which isn't optimal for your first and possibly only chance to impress readers. But the first chapter really showed promise and personally intrigued me to want to find out more about the people of this world, which is what I care about way more. The train station spread filled me with glee and really got the gears turning in my head, which I normally don't feel for adventure series (I normally need to care about the actual characters before I can care about the potential world).

The chapter expressed this idea of translating, "to truly know a language, you gotta know the people that speak it" and that was the thing that really excited me the most. One, because that's correct, you miss so much context if you just look at the words and translate them into a new language. Understanding the why is just as important as understanding the what. But also, my favorite thing from Higuma was the epilogue because it was more of a personal story between Higuma and the person he was trying to aid at the festival. The Demon Slayer school AU (obviously) puts the spotlight on the characters themselves so he was forced to refine his character writing to capture the charm of beloved characters. So if that line is true, then that essentially means it's an entire series of personal stories between Greykeys and his client of the week, just like the festival epilogue from Higuma. I think for an adventure series to really succeed these days, you need to explore the people that make the world unique. Having elaborate history and landscapes is fine and all, but the only way you'll get readers to care about those is if the people who inhabit those landscapes and wrote that elaborate history are intriguing. So if that's the angle for Greykeys (and I think it will be), I can see it differeniating itself from the recent adventure manga that all failed to make the world feel personal to the characters.

Hokami has a lot of interesting concepts that if fully explored, would be really great plots and arcs. But his greatest strengths come out when he's not focused on what comes in the future and just writes for the moment. He's definitely much more suited for smaller arcs that build towards something than trying to do long epic battle arcs. He's a character writer, not a story writer, I guess I would say. And Greykeys definitely leans into that.

I'll say this batch is 2/2 for me for now.

• Alright, that second chapter is more of what I expect from a manga written by Shun Numa. Way more outlandish and over the top in the main plot. Not a ton of notes this time. Ura File's off to a great start, but how they introduce the next major character probably determines if the series survives the long haul or if it crashes and burns. That dog sure was jumbo.
• Now THIS feels like the desperate hail mary attempt (that doesn't save the series) for Cannon Master. Really trying to highlight the author's ability to draw good action shots, trying to make an emotional turnaround with Ur and the master being heroic. I wouldn't be shocked if the master dies here and the last arc is Ur being the solo main character, trying to shake up the status quo to get any attention from potential readers.
• Someone Hertz is as adorable as always.
• for Sakamoto, why do I have a bad feeling that this is a bait and switch, and that Nagumo is going to get killed by Uzuki so that the final final final fight can be fat Sakamoto vs Nagumo!Uzuki and it somehow has more than a volume left in it.
• I can see Witch Watch ending in the first issues of 2027 (publisher wise, not the actual first issues released in 2027. I think it probably ends November-December) after this chapter. I think this is the end of the long term story though, everything else is going to be wrap up and conclusions before saying goodbye. If it is, what a run. A masterful balance between serious high stake stories, gag moments to fit in brevity, and emotional relationship building (that I'll probably talk more about when it does end). There is no replacement for Witch Watch.
