Circulation includes printed copies delivered to shops, digital, and these days usually overseas sales as well (though those will be minimal for Nue), everything.

The authors get money for printed copies and generally you don't see lots and lots of copies sitting around in shops so, when we get them, that's the best metric to follow over all the incomplete and unreliable estimations.

In fact from what i see many times japanese readers actually care more about circulation numbers than actual volume sales since always comes from the official publishers and most don't follow Oricon sales, let alone knowing Shoseki even exists lol

It just mean they printed over 100k per volumes

That's not how it works. I only see this distinction in the western manga community, if Capcom says they sold 25M copies of Monster Hunter World, they mean they shipped + sold digital copies and no one contests that. Circulation means it was sold to stores or directly to consumers through digital channels, that's all that matters to publishing companies.

Overprint barely exists in manga, at most you can say One Piece has a ton of stock at stores, but they know it will sell over time. Nue's circulation numbers also grew over time, so it's not like it was overprinted anyway.

I honestly don't understand it. Why western manga fans think the numbers from the actual publisher matter less than physical estimates by third party companies? lol Shoseki and Oricon don't get data from Shueisha. It's useful for discussion and seeing trends, but it's obvious they don't represent the whole picture, even more now with digital being a huge part of backlog sales.

I do see circulation being used quite a lot on Twitter in certain fandoms discussions but overall it's because it's not "raw sales", simple, it's supposed to be the copies printed, today mixed with digital sales, but overall it's not pure sales numbers, so it's not useful in the discussions, fan wars or when wanting to judge a newbie, not to mention unfortunately some series don't even get circulation revealed...

Seriously where is Kill Blue circulation??? There's no way it didn't hit 1 million a long time ago

Digital has changed the game all around. With backlog, it is possible it does that much per volume. Physical sales alone don't really tell much anymore. This is the case in most mediums now like video games. It's annoying to people who like tracking sales because in the past, you could easily see what manga or games were selling and how much each weekend and now we don't have access to that information but publishers will have information and those numbers make up a chunk of their total circulation numbers

Nue has enough circulation numbers to enable an anime and various colabs throughout the years. It is jaw-dropping how long it is taking to announce an anime.

Not every volume reaches that same number, volume 1 is probably much bigger than the others for example. But just on digital alone you can at least double the sales of a volume without considering how backlog sales perform all the time. This isn't a Nue specific thing with the backlog even, a ton of series like Sakamoto Days have much higher circulation numbers per volume because a ton of people buy digital older volumes, doesn't mean they'll migrate to physical or keep up with new volumes every few months.

They are. The printed copies are sold to stores or digitally to costumers, the company already profits from it. If the manga underperforms, the stores order less and the numbers go down, this is even how numbers for the physical magazines consistently go lower. This is how it works for every single industry (quick FF7 example), why companies report this and why the japanese public refers to these numbers instead of estimates. Only western manga fans have this made-up rule about it not counting.

Even in regards to physical sales, Oricon and Shoseki don't include every shop. I live in Hokkaido and only maybe half the stores in my area are part of Oricon.

Also it's not really 114k per volume, more realistically it'll be something like 200k for vol 1, 190k for vol 2, etc with the recent volumes being at 50-60k as people pick up and read through the series at different rates, others start collecting volumes but don't keep buying them, and so on.

We only need to do a quick math, the sales of a Nue's Exorcist volume through the year is, at the lowest estimation, over 30k copies, only physical, when we add digital that we know by Billboard rankings that is basically 50% or even more of Nue total sales, and Billboard track stores is from what i know smaller so far, that means a volume of Nue reaching 100k copies in the end of the year is pretty likely, how many times in this year alone all Nue volumes have gotten a sudden big boost on Amazon digital rankings? many, and that's just 1 store in Japan, so realistically it's not really hard.

From what is being shown, Hal Formula and Cannon Master are the next axes. Maybe they will end alongside Sakamoto or Witch Watch. Amd then we will see how good Ura, Graykeith and Animal Signal do on TOC, and volume 3 of Under Doctor will be really important for it.

We also have an open spot from HxH. At minimum it looks like we’re getting 4 new series with Hal, Cannon, open spot from HxH, and SD. Despite a decrease and poor ToC, I think UD stays due to still strong sales. 2B also likely stays out of vet respect and that it’s a comedy, but likely gets canned if it can’t maintain sales or increase ToC.

After the above axes I mentioned UD and 2B are the next two on the chopping block (along with WW in that it will likely end soonish) unless Ura (unlikely), greykeith (please don’t get axed), or any of the new series in the aforementioned batch of 4 do poorly.

Issue 41 Rankings:

Tier 1 (Great):

1: One Piece #1192 – I quite like the fight tbh, it’s been a while since we had a long prolonged fight (think the last one was vs Kaido?) and it’s fitting that the King of the World doesn’t go down easily, or not at all in this case. Usopp my GOAATTT!! Tell him again! Stop projecting everyone onto Luffy, Luffy is Luffy, that’s it. Usopp this arc has stood up to both Gaban and Imu, guy’s brave as hell lol. Also Gaban not noticing Usopp till he revealed himself is interesting…maybe Usopp has some kind of protection against Observation Haki? Somehow? Hmm. Maybe I’m just reading too much into it lol. It ends with the team up attack on Imu, and can I just say I like that we’ve got a group battle again. We had one last arc (Luffy, Dorry and Brogy vs The Elders), but before then it’d been like…years since we got one. SHs vs Oars type shit. Anyway, good chapter!

2: Hunter x Hunter #420 – Oh shitttttt, Hisoka IS still at the Casino! LOOOOL, this is hilarious Tserri thought he was THAT guy but now he’s come across a real killer. And of course Tserri is getting high off it. Crazy S.O.B. Tserri finally makes it to the ship (within a ship lol) and it’s locked off lol. Guy’s having his own whole side adventure here, I’m digging it. Unfortunately it’s that time of the year again where we go on break. Damn. But this was a good batch. Looking forward to the next one!

3: Roku #21 – Oh we’re still sticking with these guys, hah, thought we’d move on this chapter. Mikagami looks too cool to be a janitor smh. Kariya and Roku might actually grow to be friends lol. LMAO at Mikagami actually taking his janitor disguise seriously, hey I mean might as well, that IS the best way to blend in. Oh shittttt, I thought maybe these guys being serious would be more of a gag then anything else, but not Johan and Kabaneji, who I assume were watching over Roku because they senses something was up, actually showed up to protect him and they might actually fight for reals?? I’m kinda hype ngl, I know people don’t want this to go full battle shounen (and it most likely still won’t) but I am interested to see HOW it does action. It might end up being really fucking cool lol.

4: Akanebanashi #221 – Ok I know Zensho is a prick but the crowd heckling him, even if they think they’re “in” on the fun, made me feel kinda bad for him tbh, bro’s just getting bullied. Even Akane feels bad for him lol. The boat’s journey kinda mirroring the Arakawa School’s journey in a sense is nice. OG Arakawa says Zensho fits being a Rakugoka because of his lonely back and the chapter ends with us being show Issho’s back. I see where this is going. I got chills, Issho is such a good antagonist and the whole Arakawa School dynamic is super interesting, great chapter! Super looking forward to Issho’s performance next!

5: Shinobi Undercover #96 – Oh so Fukuro just abuses the rules to go super fast on her bike lmao. Bro her bike is remoted controlled?! I like Fukuro, she kinda reminds me of what Barbossa in Pirates of the Caribbean said about the pirate laws – “they’re more guidelines than rules” lol. Oh wow, I didn’t expect this character to come back of all people….i kinda take back what I said about Fukuro, she’s kinda fucked up, she’s like the Mayuri Kurotsuchi of the series lol. Kinda feel bad for Hojiro lmao. We even got a full on Pokémon reference lol. Lowkey using a person who gets stronger the more damage they take as an absolute tool is…unethical, BUT hella smart lol. Fukuro is a very confusing character lol, I can’t tell if he’s good or bad, really she’s just morally grey. I like her! And I liked this chapter!

Tier 2 (Good):

Kagurabachi #131 – Finally they admitted that the plan to hand over Chiaki was dumb. Like they said, there’s no guarantee the Mikaboshi would have held their end of the bargain and even if they did, it only delayed things by a year anyway. Oh hey, surprise Kyora appearance! Between trusting Kunishige or trusting the Mikaboshi, the choice is extremely obvious lol, or it should be. Ohhh lightning guy! I forgot his name, but his brother is a current character right, Natsuki I think his name is? Damn, it’s been so long. But this guy’s brother is trying to avenge him since he was killed by Hokuto after getting fat after the war iirc…I wonder what made him go that way, wouldn’t surprise me if he had PTSD or something and let himself go, which is gonna be depressing but hey…

Someone Hertz #48 – Even Mizuo’s sleep talk is her yapping nonsense hahaha. Them both being heavy sleep talkers give me a funny image of them sleeping next to each other and having a full blown conversation as if they were awake between each other lol.

Ultimate Exorcist Kiyoshi #107 – Hmm now I’m lowkey sus of Professor Yagi…what if he lied?! Akari already putting her new skills to use, nice! Jeez that demon phantom is pretty creepy looking lmao. So ghosts do actually exist in this universe?? Crazy, and you can’t even exorcise them lol. Interesting, so this Iefuda guy who supposedly got spirited away actually killed this ghost…well, he wasn’t a ghost, he’s now a ghost because Iefuda killed him, you get what I mean! The plot thickens! Prof Yagi definitely shooting up on my sus list, even if he didn’t do it directly, I feel like he’s involved somehow still.

Ichi the Witch #97 – LMAO Dess finally realises she hasn’t actually taught anything to Ichi, or at least not on purpose anyway. I have to say, Minakata’s introduction to Dess leading to Dess character development wasn’t on my bingo card, but I like it. Lol Ichi doesn’t want to learn stuff like taunts ffs Dess. And Dess definitely is the type to buy a plant and let it die lol. Wait, Ichi actually did successfully taunt Hakari, but by complete accident lol. Interesting that Hakari can “hear” the voices of captured Majiks, even ones that Dess keeps locked down faarrrr deep. And lol the last page, where the hell did all these dogs come from? Who’s spell/Majik even is this? Either way, it’s cute.

Under Doctor #31 – So he has hand tremors huh, and for such a specific time lol. Dr. De Beau seems to have his heart in the right place to help people, but it does seem a bit selfish imo to do surgery when you can fuck up at any time, even if you supposedly know when the tremors are coming. Who’s to say they won’t get worse, for example, mid surgery? Lol. SEE?! I knew it!!! How lucky is he that Haiji is here and Ashcroft. Irresponsible! But also kinda responsible because you did actually take the help offered hah. He should just go to some ancient monks and like get them to fix his hands with magic that he learns so that he can…become a strange doctor…or something hah.

Hal Formula #12 – Way too early to be getting emotional about a potential win man, way too premature! That double page spread is really really cool man, so sick. Miharu won, let’s goooo!!! I mean the race was over due to the Yellow Flag but even without that, he’d have still won I think. Hinokura realising he’s become more of a machine when it comes to racing rather than enjoying it is nice, maybe their next race will be different! And Kyogoku is gonna becomes Adler Light’s manager! Nice.

Cannon Master #11 – Yo his power is actually pretty sick? To conjure stuff out of rocks. The art for Sadoh’s initial attack is also very cool, really like how it distorts everything. Actually, shit the art in general this chapter is REALLY good overall lol, I especially liked Ur’s face when he told Bharat that he never had any right being his apprentice, brilliant. I do unfortunately smell a bit of an axe here, but hopefully I’m wrong. I could see this just being an early raising of the stakes, like many series have had. They get their butts kicked, go into a training arc, kinda standard (I hope, although now having seen the ToC....yikes lol).

Graykeith: Translator Daemonica #1 (NEW) – As someone who read the one shot and it didn’t really leave too lasting a memory on me, the name change from Gray Keys to GrayKeith isn’t really that big a deal to me lol. Anyway, straight from the start I can say I like the art. Some people might find it a bit too clustered, but I enjoy that there’s a lot seemingly going on at all times. Makes it feel livelier. I actually don’t remember if the assistant character was in the one shot? Oh well lol. Aw the grandmother trying to translate the book for Kisaragi in the twilight of her life was nice. The Hanged Lady looks really cool. Welp, I think this is pretty solid overall and the premise is nice, and also I like supernatural and spooky kinda settings like these. The world building is also interesting. Not sure how well it’d do as a longer series, but I guess we’ll find out!

Me and Roboco #296 – Roboco’s muscular arms look like those fake muscle arms Spongebob had in that one episode lmao. Holy shit she became the muscle version of a Geodude, actually even worse because she has no arms. I don’t even know what to say about her final form….

Ruridragon #51 – Yes, as a cat person I love this. Even though I’m allergic to cats lmao. Ahh training arc time. Lol at the cats all sleeping on or around Ruri, been there. It’s both uncomfortable and comfortable at the same time tbh. Shit, her fire won’t turn off…hopefully it doesn’t burn down the shrine!

Tier 3 (Ok):

Sakamoto Days #274 – Nagumo hit Uzuki with the uno reverse card. Well, not too much to say about this chapter, but I have a feeling the main Uzuki is gonna come out now for reals and he’ll actually be stronger/more dangerous than before. The panel of Uzuki reflecting on his past choices was cool though. Let’s see next chapter!

Nue’s Exorcist #160 – We finally see Kazusa’s new abilities, well some of them. I do enjoy me a good fighting style that employs kicking, it’s always cool as fuck, and this isn’t an exception. The fanservice is whatever, it’s been 160 chapters, if you’re still complaining about at this point then idk what to say.

Animal Signal #13 – Wanting to get spit on by an Alpaca is…a choice. Looks like Shion has found his master. What an insane second to last page lol, this series is definitely the author’s barely disguised fetish btw. Tsubasa is attracting one weird harem lol.

Witch Watch #261 – Like I thought it wasn’t as easy as that…..well, actually, they still did it and Nico provided the winning touch! And shout out Rabuka for the last second save as well! I would be lying if I said that it didn’t feel a bit anticlimactic, I thought Shikimi would have one more trick up his sleeve, well he kinda did but Nico prevented it. I do like the idea of Shikimi helping to restore the reputation of Witches though. I wonder if there will be one more arc, a more SoL type arc, to end the series or if it’s ending REAL soon, like next batch soon? Anyway, the Bone Crisis arc in general was really good, enjoyed it a lot tbh but this finale seems rather lukewarm. I also suspect that the series still has a bit of a ways to go, I think we'll have some more shenanigans and a SoL mini arc to end things.

Class 2-B #19 – Between this, Animal Signal and Ichi there’s been a lot of dogs in this week’s issue lol. The new hero, Shihan has a bit of a screw loose, but he did save the dog soooo. The girl’s innocence was shattered lol. Hmm seems the Demon King took one step closer to becoming a hero more than something evil.

The Ura Files #2 – Hmm just realised Kibitsu’s name is Momotaro, so I’m guessing there’s gonna be some peach story stuff that’ll happen, since Ura is an Oni after all. Need a monkey and a dog, and a pheasant too. That’s certainly one way to use your super agent skills lol. That IS a really big hotdog tbf, I get why she wants it lol. Cute second chapter.

Overall a really solid issue of the mag!

The plot thickens! Prof Yagi definitely shooting up on my sus list, even if he didn’t do it directly, I feel like he’s involved somehow still.

Ichi the Witch #97 – LMAO Dess finally realises she hasn’t actually taught anything to Ichi, or at least not on purpose anyway. I have to say, Minakata’s introduction to Dess leading to Dess character development wasn’t on my bingo card, but I like it. Lol Ichi doesn’t want to learn stuff like taunts ffs Dess. And Dess definitely is the type to buy a plant and let it die lol. Wait, Ichi actually did successfully taunt Hakari, but by complete accident lol. Interesting that Hakari can “hear” the voices of captured Majiks, even ones that Dess keeps locked down faarrrr deep. And lol the last page, where the hell did all these dogs come from? Who’s spell/Majik even is this? Either way, it’s cute.

Under Doctor #31 – So he has hand tremors huh, and for such a specific time lol. Dr. De Beau seems to have his heart in the right place to help people, but it does seem a bit selfish imo to do surgery when you can fuck up at any time, even if you supposedly know when the tremors are coming. Who’s to say they won’t get worse, for example, mid surgery? Lol. SEE?! I knew it!!! How lucky is he that Haiji is here and Ashcroft. Irresponsible! But also kinda responsible because you did actually take the help offered hah. He should just go to some ancient monks and like get them to fix his hands with magic that he learns so that he can…become a strange doctor…or something hah.

Hal Formula #12 – Way too early to be getting emotional about a potential win man, way too premature! That double page spread is really really cool man, so sick. Miharu won, let’s goooo!!! I mean the race was over due to the Yellow Flag but even without that, he’d have still won I think. Hinokura realising he’s become more of a machine when it comes to racing rather than enjoying it is nice, maybe their next race will be different! And Kyogoku is gonna becomes Adler Light’s manager! Nice.

Cannon Master #11 – Yo his power is actually pretty sick? To conjure stuff out of rocks. The art for Sadoh’s initial attack is also very cool, really like how it distorts everything. Actually, shit the art in general this chapter is REALLY good overall lol, I especially liked Ur’s face when he told Bharat that he never had any right being his apprentice, brilliant. I do unfortunately smell a bit of an axe here, but hopefully I’m wrong. I could see this just being an early raising of the stakes, like many series have had. They get their butts kicked, go into a training arc, kinda standard (I hope, although now having seen the ToC....yikes lol).

Graykeith: Translator Daemonica #1 (NEW) – As someone who read the one shot and it didn’t really leave too lasting a memory on me, the name change from Gray Keys to GrayKeith isn’t really that big a deal to me lol. Anyway, straight from the start I can say I like the art. Some people might find it a bit too clustered, but I enjoy that there’s a lot seemingly going on at all times. Makes it feel livelier. I actually don’t remember if the assistant character was in the one shot? Oh well lol. Aw the grandmother trying to translate the book for Kisaragi in the twilight of her life was nice. The Hanged Lady looks really cool. Welp, I think this is pretty solid overall and the premise is nice, and also I like supernatural and spooky kinda settings like these. The world building is also interesting. Not sure how well it’d do as a longer series, but I guess we’ll find out!

Me and Roboco #296 – Roboco’s muscular arms look like those fake muscle arms Spongebob had in that one episode lmao. Holy shit she became the muscle version of a Geodude, actually even worse because she has no arms. I don’t even know what to say about her final form….

Ruridragon #51 – Yes, as a cat person I love this. Even though I’m allergic to cats lmao. Ahh training arc time. Lol at the cats all sleeping on or around Ruri, been there. It’s both uncomfortable and comfortable at the same time tbh. Shit, her fire won’t turn off…hopefully it doesn’t burn down the shrine!

Sakamoto Days #274 – Nagumo hit Uzuki with the uno reverse card. Well, not too much to say about this chapter, but I have a feeling the main Uzuki is gonna come out now for reals and he’ll actually be stronger/more dangerous than before. The panel of Uzuki reflecting on his past choices was cool though. Let’s see next chapter!

Nue’s Exorcist #160 – We finally see Kazusa’s new abilities, well some of them. I do enjoy me a good fighting style that employs kicking, it’s always cool as fuck, and this isn’t an exception. The fanservice is whatever, it’s been 160 chapters, if you’re still complaining about at this point then idk what to say.

Animal Signal #13 – Wanting to get spit on by an Alpaca is…a choice. Looks like Shion has found his master. What an insane second to last page lol, this series is definitely the author’s barely disguised fetish btw. Tsubasa is attracting one weird harem lol.

Witch Watch #261 – Like I thought it wasn’t as easy as that…..well, actually, they still did it and Nico provided the winning touch! And shout out Rabuka for the last second save as well! I would be lying if I said that it didn’t feel a bit anticlimactic, I thought Shikimi would have one more trick up his sleeve, well he kinda did but Nico prevented it. I do like the idea of Shikimi helping to restore the reputation of Witches though. I wonder if there will be one more arc, a more SoL type arc, to end the series or if it’s ending REAL soon, like next batch soon? Anyway, the Bone Crisis arc in general was really good, enjoyed it a lot tbh but this finale seems rather lukewarm. I also suspect that the series still has a bit of a ways to go, I think we'll have some more shenanigans and a SoL mini arc to end things.

Class 2-B #19 – Between this, Animal Signal and Ichi there’s been a lot of dogs in this week’s issue lol. The new hero, Shihan has a bit of a screw loose, but he did save the dog soooo. The girl’s innocence was shattered lol. Hmm seems the Demon King took one step closer to becoming a hero more than something evil.

The Ura Files #2 – Hmm just realised Kibitsu’s name is Momotaro, so I’m guessing there’s gonna be some peach story stuff that’ll happen, since Ura is an Oni after all. Need a monkey and a dog, and a pheasant too. That’s certainly one way to use your super agent skills lol. That IS a really big hotdog tbf, I get why she wants it lol. Cute second chapter.

Overall a really solid issue of the mag!

A lot has been said already about the TOC and Kagurabachi and Nue and more, and I’ve read through most of that discourse, so I’ll try to keep my thoughts not too repetitive on top of what was said.

I do believe that they planned on Chihiro being bigger on the cover and shrunk him after learning of the absence. There’s enough room around where he is and to the side of Luffy that it could easily have fit more of him. I hope that Hokazono is able to find a solution with editorial that prevents cases like this again.

I’m curious to see that the cover features what seem to be both Bunny ears and Horse ears on characters? Some of the floppier ones like Yodaka even look more like Dog ears, so I’m wondering how specific the prompt was. Either way I’m a little lukewarm on this theme, since it doesn’t do much to redesign the characters, really only sticking a headdress on and giving them whatever different clothes the authors feel like giving. I guess that makes sense from a out-of-place cover, though.

As others have echoed, this was a pretty poor time of year for a Sakamoto LCP with all the anniversaries, and the only way I’ll be content with it is if this is the final Sakamoto LCP for the series coming to an end, since otherwise they’d have to fit it in a few weeks later and that wouldn’t help much more.

I have come to accept Cannon Master’s fate, and am sadly starting to lose hope in Hal, but I’ll be curious to see which one between Hal and Under Doctor dies first, since the latter seems to still be kicking sparks; to say nothing of 2B’s peculiar circumstance. Truly, the next wave will be a curious site to behold.
