Sensen Senki's getting reprints before it's release.

Was not expecting the writer to be a-10.

Normally, I would say Sensen Senki's off to a fantastic start, but it's absolutely been scalped. Has tons of listings on mercari. There should be some popularity there, enough to continue though. Killer+Sitter does decent.

It was well liked already, so it was likely already going to sell in a survivable range.

I also kind of feel like that a WSM series getting physically scalped matters less in the long run. Pocket offers you an easy way to catch up to series since you can buy the individual chapters easily (and they offer free chapter promotions, though that's usually only pre volume 1). I'm pretty sure WSM readers are more open to buying digital volumes in general too. The main two things scalping does is annoy people who want to legitimately buy the volume, but also opens the series up to word of mouth, mainly "Is there an actual reason why this would be worth scalping?" And for Sensen Senki specifically, word of mouth boosting it has proven to be a thing in the past (there's a few chapters that got noticed on social media, which caused more people to check out the following Pocket chapters and they're positively received every time it happens). So the short term annoyance the scalping caused, is probably worth it for a new WSM series since it's way harder for them to get noticed early on, compared to a WSJ or Jump+ series.

Also for what it's worth, when I checked Amazon, Sensen Senki was #52 in Japanese Books/#106 in Graphic Novels (Japanese Books) physically and #106 in Graphic Novels (Japanese Books) and #139 in Shonen Manga digitally. It was also doing decent/good on Rakuten digitally (which is a miracle for new WSM series) and physically, it was essentially the top new release that day as well (the top 2 were preorders for things coming out in November), and the weekly ranking (reflecting the week before release), was in the 200s, which is also pretty good for a new WSM series. For reference, Killer Sister's was in the 600s physically and its digital rankings were in the 8000s for the 16th. So I think, if nothing else, some people did decide to check out the series after the physical volume got scalped.

So yeah, obviously Sensen Senki isn't already more popular than the SDS sequel or A Couple of Cuckoos, but I think there's a good chance it can be the next Yaernacht, and it has more mainstream appeal so it can end up being bigger than it eventually.

Which is good, it was looking rocky for awhile, but the next era for Magazine is starting to shape up well: Umine, Yaernacht, Sensen Senki, and Lilim Holic (probably) and I guess Dream Jumbo Girl too being added on top of Kaijin Fujeki, Yumene Connect, and Orion's Board, is a solid lineup of series waiting for an anime.

Isn't that super common? An assistant getting an obi rec from the mangaka they worked under. Gachiakuta doesn't seem that big either. I'm leaning more towards jellyfish's post. Scalping for this has more to do with speculation of it being a big hit due to the reprint before release news. Reprint for a new work by a rookie before release is almost unheard of and shows how popular it is. Resellers must have been salivating at this news.

It won the Kodansha Manga Award this year after getting nominated several times in previous years. It's one of the most relevant series on the current market.

It also sells 25K physically and doesn't do much digitally. Sensen Senki's going to either do around those numbers or end up with a bit more. The bigger thing which brought attention to it was the reprint before release, that's most likely what brought scalper's attention.

Assumed it was a lot more popular abroad but reception was more muted domestically hence why I didn't see the obi being a major draw. My bad if it's a lot more mainstream in japan than I gave it credit for.

I'm using K Manga to read Witch Hat Atelier. It is pissing me off that I cannot binge read everything (at least one time) like it is for Manga Plus. In addition to that, some chapters are behind a paywall.

Is there any way to get more points to read if all? Or this app is really designed for us to pay to read?

I'm also noticing that this changes a lot depending on the manga. Some have more free chapters than others. That's sad.

This pay per chapter thing works in countries like Korea but I doubt it'll ever catch on in most countries. I wish they would just offer a monthly subscription or something.

If it was just like Manga Plus it would have been enough. Reading one time only is enough when binge-reading it.
