Isn't this a great time for newbies though? There have been periods in time where Jump had, like, 16 long-running series, and the rookies had to fight for the scraps. Now, there are only 10-11 established series, so the chances of a decent new series sticking around are much higher.
It depends on how you look at it.
Between 2023 and now, there have been many series with untapped potential that just needed time to take off (for all sorts of reasons: storytelling, design, marketing and so on)

The real issue is that they’re simply not given enough time to rookies.
If you look at the series that have been treated the worst, you have to wonder: as an author, what can you possibly do in 15 chapters (or 18–20, if you’re lucky)? How are you supposed to convince readers to buy your work when only the first volume is even available?

In a utopian world where manga were printed like novels (with 300–500 pages and giving like 30–50 chapters to prove itself) how many series could have been saved?

Not to mention social media, a place full of people with “objective” opinions (I still haven’t figured out what experience they’re basing them on) who tear apart any new story starting from the second chapter (not even 100 pages, if we count them)

It has been like that since the 70s when the magazine grew a lot. There are Ole Golazo, which debuted in 2012, Tokyo Wonder Boys, in 2015 and Time Paradox Ghostwriter in 2020, recent and before 2023, all axed with less than 15 chapters.

Yes, but the world changes, and so do the rules; if we have to rely on readers (and editors) who are used to rejecting your work at the first sign of a flawed chapter, we're doomed.

Let’s take UNDER DOCTOR as an example (since I’ve read it and i can explain myself better)
If it weren’t for the boosted (scalper) sales of Volume 1 and the solid performance of Volume 2 (atm 8/10k in first month is a mid/good performance), the series would already be in worse shape than Cannon Master (if it hadn’t outright axed along with Kinato’s Magic and Alien Headbutt) and with that the readers wouldn’t have seen the chapters currently being published, which gradually reveal Tanimoto’s vision of an episodic manga with a wandering, nonlinear storyline (which is unusual by standard, but it works!)

This is one of many examples, like Kiyoshi, but that one is more about marketing controversy and how people reacted on social media... because, even though the story is pretty basic, it’s a guilty pleasure for most of the readers (except for those haters who, at every possible opportunity, always put it last in weekly ranking)

i remember mentioning earlier into serialisation that one of Tanimoto's weakest aspect on his art is that he has trouble drawing fight sequences.

Well shit, he completely improved on that aspect in this arc. Shuli's fight was great.

Issue 47:

1. Nue's Exorcist

This arc is a rebirth of Gakuro as Nue's Exorcist, not just as someone that happened to be passing there and found her, not just as someone following a family's destiny, but as an individual that created a personal bond with her. Nue to him isn't just a goddess or a monster, not just hist savior, but his friend. Following on that, we go back to basics in this chapter. Kasha is back being a boy, Nue and Gakuro are a duo again, but Shiroha is the piece that is going against the past.

At the beginning of the story, Shiroha's situation forced Gakuro to become a hero capable of shouldering the pain from everyone, but now it's time for Shiroha to gain her independece, she's who will save Gakuro this time and reclaim her destiny by bringing down centuries of atrocities done by the Fujino.

2. Ura

Manga about demi-humans and similar ideas aren't that uncommon nowadays, we have popular ones like Ogami Tsumiki serializing right now, so I'm enjoying Ura's spin is about Kibitsu growing as a person as he understands Ura's situation. Inari isn't Ura, so we know now it's not that he sees Ura as someone special because she's an oni, but because she's Ura. He's understanding fast even someone as otherwordly as a fox goddess may hide her true feelings just like he, a human, does and empathizes with that.

3. Ruri Dragon

Another manga doing the same thing, conceptually, is Ruri. But here we get the inner thoughts of someone trying to understand herself and her role in society as someone different. Ruri sees herself just as Ruri, but she knows how not everyone can do that. It's an interesting point being made here about how the space around someone may shape even their own perception of self. The ending was pretty interesting as well as we just had a whole talk about personality and change.

4. Roku

Kabaneji is such a cool friend to have around. We all need a Kabaneji to show us how amazing all the basic things we learn to do are. Excited for the arc that is apparently starting, lots of Sachiko ahead.

5. Hero Destroyerz:

Happy to see another gag chapter and this was one of the best ones so far. The Black Flames and the Toast plus Narration combo were both peak Sorachi comedy.

As for the others... In general, really good issue, both Someone Hertz and Animal Signal managed to be fun and progress their main relationships. And I assume that's Cannon Master's final boss? Hey, he looks cool at least. Maybe Hal Formula will survive for a batch after all, doesn't feel like it's wrapping up.

Who are the authors and magazine publishing manga for, if not the readers?
I don't believe Jump should change, they're already more lenient than they were in the past. But I honestly think it's fine for authors to create for themselves and generally that makes more interesting art. Of course, the readers end up deciding if they like it or not and based on that the magazine decides what to keep around. That's all fair, but generally I have a hard time enjoying things that feel they're stuck chasing mass market trends instead of the personal interests and styles of a creative.

Still hate the idea of old series taking space in the magazine unless they're one shots or very short serializations.

I liked the characters from Psych House.
:hee

who tear apart any new story starting from the second chapter (not even 100 pages, if we count them)
Ngl I'm guilty of trashing 2B and Roku early on too on x.
:dumpster

Another sweet and tender Roku chapter with the comedy dialed back like the altra chapters. Personally I prefer having Kabaneji mingling with the other curses or roku for these types of chapters but they gotta build up the camraderie with these coworkers for the readers to care about them since I assume they'll be in danger soon

2B was pretty dang funny today with the introduction of a new girl. I guess this is gonna be the core group from now on with the other students ditched. Maybe that's too early to say but it certainly feels like it.

Lol the villain in under doctor really was a M too. Generally not a fan of action in this manga but it was well done this time and always a plus to see Haiji's group become more closely knit.

This Akane chapter really is the culmination of years and it doesn't disappoint.

Boy they blitzed through the character introductions this time for Hal. I don't mind the qualifying races being skipped this time since they really took up way too many chapters last time. Probably taking a lot of the criticisms to heart from the earlier chapters or depressingly they're rushing through because he got the axe notice

For Kagurabachi it might feel sudden to jump into the middle of the war but I don't get the impression we missed out on a lot.

Kiyoshi all around hype the whole chapter.

Amazing:Akane, Kiyoshi
Bretty gud:Hal,Ichi, Roboco,2B, Under Doctor, One Piece, Kagurabachi, Sakamoto, Roku, Graykeith, Cannon Master

once again, i don't mean to sound like a battleshonen fanatic but ruri has been so much better ever since it started having battle shonen elements. I think the weird contrast to the slice of life elements is doing it for me in a positive way. I do still feel like the dialogues still meanders~ alot, it always feel like it overexplains stuff

Anyway, i hope the actiony stuff doesnt stop with this arc and we see start seeing more fantastical side of the manga.

Edit: This would all be season 2 material for the anime and god knows when that would start airing.

I'm in a book club and it's normal for people to drop a book by the 3rd or 4th chapter. You can smell when something doesn't work for you, and you don't need to see an entire volume to the end to know whether you would like something or not. Go on a webnovel reading binge and for sure you would drop 90% of them from the 1st chapter alone. Western comics adopt the model you're talking about, but it's not like they see more successes. If anything, Jump's model of vetting things early is the most effective way to generate a proper hit. One which doesn't waste their time, the reader's time or the author's time. Could you imagine drawing 500 pages of manga only for it to sell 5 copies? Yeah, horrible waste of time and resources. It's better to kill their darlings early before it consumes them, so that they can better use their time for a future project. And I say this as an opinion hanging around an artist circle. Fujimoto once talked about running his own version of Jump in his head, axing them all, and picking the idea that ran the longest. Creatively, not every idea one makes will be a success. And the best route to improvement is to not get too hung up on an idea and be ready to discard some beloved ones for better ideas.

This author has published several one-shots, and most of them are battle shonen. It's normal for manga to start one way and end another. Witch Watch, for example, started as a manga about a clumsy little witch, and now an end-of-the-world battle is happening in the final arc.
I don't think Ruridragon will turn into a battle shonen, but the author may want to include more elements of that genre.

Sakamoto Days isn't even pretending to care about plot now. Kanaguri shows and just blasts them off to a random other location because Suzuki wanted to draw a fight in is so funny. I'm all for it, fighting through various movie sets is a fantastic way to do a Sakamoto vs fake Sakamoto final battle.

Roku seems like it's possibly starting up a serious arc for the double colour pages so I'm excited to see how it tackles it, the premise has a lot of potential for that whether it's battle stuff with Kabaneji, or genuine horror-dedicated chapters which we haven't seen in Jump aside from a few random Roboco chapters in a loooong time. Not since Muhyo and Roji, perhaps?
