Just as an addendum, Sachiko would logically have been the simpler curse to research given that her circumstances are most likely more recent than the others. Johan's got a vampire thing going on, so his history may be lost in medieval texts. Kabaneji's from a wartorn era, so his could have been stuck in feudal texts. Altra and the dog are hard to pin down, but they could be just as old. Sachiko's garb immediately pins her down to be at least from 1950 and beyond, so more contemporary mediums would've been found.

And for a drama arc, I also agree with Sachiko being the first. One underlying question I wondered about is if the curses would leave the story once they find peace. If there's anyone here that would lead to an immediate heart attack on the reader at the threat of them never appearing again, it's Sachiko.

It's a very good first step, that much I can agree with.
I think I can agree with all your points. My only concern is whether the series will take a noticeable dip in popularity when she’s (eventually) gone, and I think Nakamura and the editorial team will want to delay that eventuality as much as possible. That’s why I’m a bit worried that it might be too soon for Sachiko, because the way this is going, it seems the curses will be gone in the same order that their first “serious” arc will go.

By the way, I forgot to say one thing.

I don’t want to hear any arguments: Shoichi Usui is the best character designer in Weekly Shonen Jump
After 113 chapters, he hasn’t missed even once!

lol you guys actually think any of the curses will ever disappear in this manga? And specially Sachiko being the first to "disappear"? :XD

The whole point of the manga is watching Roku's life with these curses, without them there's no manga and i doubt Nakamura is planning to end this in less than 4 years to say the least after getting axed twice.

I think it might happen. Because curses or spirits if you dwell with the supernatural, the main thing that compels them to stay and not pass on are lingering feelings and unfinished business. So while they don’t exist in this world, they will always find a way to stay and try to communicate or use their powers to make a point. But if they do pass on, my guess is they will return in the end but reincarnated to living beings. I may watch to much media but it would make sense in my mind for Roku in seeing them again as they are making an impact on him in a positive way and much more.

I mean, wether or not they DO disappear in the end which really just depends on how Nakamura tackles the theme of life and death the series has, it definitely won't be so soon or so simple. It took Nue over 100 chapters before they killed the first Hyo, same with the Seitei War flashback for Kagurabachi.

It's something I'm guilty of too, I think many of us think too linearly when it comes to storytelling. You never know what plot twists authors have in store.

Sure. Maybe I’m paranoid, and quite frankly, I do agree that it would be suicide for Nakamura to do that (but then again, there have been authors who got soft-axed simply because they couldn’t stretch out their manga any further than it did). Another option I see is, resolving like 80% each of the curses’ secrets and then wrap them all up in one big shebang in the final arc.

I think it might happen. Because curses or spirits if you dwell with the supernatural, the main thing that compels them to stay and not pass on are lingering feelings and unfinished business. I definitely like the idea of them reincarnating at the end.

I agree. We still don’t know what kind of curveballs Nakamura will throw at us (I just hope he doesn’t play them for laughs. In comedy, timing is everything)

No one actually believes they'll disappear this early on, it'd be career suicide to write Sachiko off this early. But the narrative of the manga has established that curses who find peace are sent to the next world, and has not established an alternative. For the context of the manga where it's at, the only possibility at the moment to completing Sachiko's arc is for her to pass on. So the drama surrounding it becomes very real the more Roku investigates them, and without a precedence that they can stay, the threat that Sachiko of all characters may be the first to go creates a compelling narrative that would keep readers on their seats. It's smart to put her on the hot seat instead of say, the dog.

You gotta meet the story where it puts its beats down, instead of the meta knowledge of a reader who knows the manga wants to go on for another 200 chapters. Yes, obviously, they won't write her out at this point. But the readers don't know that and have no clues how the situation would develop, and that's where the meaty drama unfolds.

Roku is a comedy manga about the mc living his life with these courses and the curses living in the human world doing regular stuff, once you remove even one of them, the manga stop working, it will be like a horse with three legs, and the impact will be directly felt in the writing and alienate readers, the "we need to resolve unfinished business" it's just a plot tool to shake things up from time to time, and doesn't even has to have the characters "passing" after resolving this unfinished business since the whole selling point of the series is not to find out what are the curses unfinished business but seeing them living regular human lives, Nakamura can just simply pull a "oh well, i love living with Roku so i will not go to heaven or something" type of twist and no one will care lol

I am curious how the curses passing on would work, in the sense that once you get rid of more than two it'd become less "Roku's House of Oddities" and more "Roku's Weird Roommate and Dog." Like, for a short series I could totally see it since the emptiness wouldn't be felt for as long but for something presumably meant to last at least a couple hundred chapters? I dunno.

I definitely agree with both statements because the only real person to know this is Nakamura. But we can’t lose Sachiko this early. In the end, we still have time, and this also being a comedy series, it will spread the arcs very sparingly. Kind of like what Witch Watch did.

However, after typing my previous post and reading everyone else’s comments, and finally after showing a video to my dad on when Bleach started back in 2001, I realized something. When dealing with a story that revolves around death and spirits, whether they are exorcist battle series or something like this with Roku, the main aspect is regarding death and how it’s dealt with and how those spirits move on. However, in the end, it is all about how the author sees it and have an answer for that in their story. Not like the answer to the subject itself, but more like an answer to the narrative they introduced themselves from their story and what both the author and us as the reader got out of it and if it was satisfactory to us all from them.

With death stories like this and exorcist battle stories like Bleach, D. Gray-man, Demon Slayer, JJK, ect. they all lend themselves to being dark shonen stories, but as well, it makes them really feel like they’re coming out age as their innocence is lost or gone and they truly face growing up and the like but in a much darker direction.

Sakamoto Days (Yuto Suzuki)

Thanks for six years of support! I’m so happy to get such an awesome cover!

Ichi the Witch (Osamu Nishi)

If 10 + 5 is so easy, why does 8 + 7 become so difficult?

Someone Hertz (Ei Yamano)

I bought a pen with a transparent tip for my iPad. It’s thin and easy to use. Plus, it’s so cool how it’s see-through!

Under Doctor (Kyo Tanimoto)

I saw that they were doing a Dragon Ball collab, so I bought some rest and recovery gear! Can’t wait!

Akane-banashi (Yuki Suenaga)

I watched my kid’s school sports day for the first time. Seeing them running hard full of energy gave me the feels.

Witch Watch (Kenta Shinohara)

I don’t play games at all except for Threes!, which I use for a quick break.

Roku’s House of Oddities (Atsushi Nakamura)

It happened a little while ago, but thanks to everyone who voted for us to be ninth in the Next Manga Award. Unparalleled gratitude!

Graykeith: Translator Daemonica (Natsuki Hokami)

If I drink black tea while wearing a cold compress on my arm, it tastes like herb tea.

Animal Signal (Taishi Tsutsui)

I’m going for a bench press personal record, so I’m challenging myself with the Ted Arcidi training cycle.

Me & Roboco (Shuhei Miyazaki)

I went to a toe live show. It was so awesome! Now I want to play an instrument!

The Ura Files (Shun Numa)

The onion oil from Momoya is so good I keep pouring it on rice and boiled chicken.

Shinobi Undercover (Ippon Takegushi)

The fried salmon at 7-Eleven is so good that what’s the point of preparing it myself?

Ultimate Exorcist Kiyoshi (Shoichi Usui)

They’re now selling Yu-Gi-Oh! cards re-created from the manga! It’s bringing back memories and hyping me up.

Nue’s Exorcist (Kota Kawae)

As if chasing after a setting sun, I went to see The Odyssey in the theaters.

Hal Formula (Kento Terasaka)

Wow! Three straight wins for Verstappen! I hope he challenges for the championship like last year.

Class 2B Hero Destroyerz (Hideaki Sorachi)

I received word of the passing of an old classmate. I was filled with sadness and also the realization that I’m getting to that age…

Cannon Master (Reiya Machida)

I’m often thinking about how I should have studied English harder. I want to watch subtitled movies while working…

Kagurabachi (Takeru Hokazono)

Mujirushi isn’t stocking the Baumkuchen with salted icing. I’m living in sadness. My lifeline is gone…

Some real good chapters this week between Roku doing some drama, Under Doctor actually having half decent action, a bit of romantic progress in Shinobigoto, and Fujino finally getting some spotlight again in Nue.

I'm not getting any sense of Hal Formula ending yet, and it's position usually above Cannon Master and Class 2B gives me hope that it can last a little longer at least. I don't see it surviving long term with its performance so far and lack of any colour pages but the racing is fantastic, so I hope it can at least get into the 30s before it's cancelled. it would suck for the author to have three series in a row that all end just before ch 30.

All of this that you said is a pretext to prolong the work, just like several other manga that have already been published in WSJ. You say that the manga is about "curses living normal human lives," but there's no development in a dog in clothes cleaning its own dirt.
And Roku is no different from other manga in the magazine, especially Witch Watch, which says that the story is about a little witch living normal days, but the author exaggerates the number of chapters and in the end you have more than 260 chapters, with less than half of those chapters developing the plot.

I literally said I am in FAVOUR of the time skip, and that the arc has been dragging for me.

I have the series in my top 5 a lot of the times, it's just this flashback as a whole that I am conflicted on. What do you MEAN I don't like the manga??
So, you must agree that, even with the "flaws" pointed out in this forum, one of the things the Kagurabachi fandom wants to see in this arc is the Kodoku. It's one of the most anticipated moments of the Seitei War, so the arc can't end without it being shown, at least that's the opinion of many Kagurabachi fans.
