I am curious how the curses passing on would work, in the sense that once you get rid of more than two it'd become less "Roku's House of Oddities" and more "Roku's Weird Roommate and Dog." Like, for a short series I could totally see it since the emptiness wouldn't be felt for as long but for something presumably meant to last at least a couple hundred chapters? I dunno.
I think what’ll happen is the curses will have their narrative resolved but won’t move on. Everyone will be curious why. At the end, once all 5 curses are resolved, they’ll move on (meaning all curses backstories resolved and making sure Roku has a girlfriend) Because they’d have regrets since they’re a family.

You all know I hate posting twitter posts, but this is the only exception because anything from Togashi regarding HxH chapters is like a treat.

The Bleach anime has finished, and I just watched this interview, and it has some really interesting parts.

Here are some interesting parts of the interview:

HYPEBEAST: BLEACH was serialized weekly for many years. How did you decide what would happen in each chapter? Which elements were planned far in advance, and which were decided week by week?

Tite Kubo
: I had a long-term plan for the overall story. I had also decided on the ending very early in the series. BLEACH begins with Ichigo and Rukia meeting, and ends with Ichigo’s child and Rukia’s child meeting. I structured the entire story so that everything would gradually converge toward that ending. Each week, I would make sure to include at least one scene that I genuinely wanted to draw, and then construct the rest of the chapter around the path leading to that moment.

Did the production team become much larger as the series progressed? What are the difficulties involved in expanding a manga production team?

The team never became particularly large [laughs]. The original three assistants worked with me from almost the beginning of the series all the way through to the end. Later in the serialization, we added a fourth assistant, so we became a team of four. This person changed a few times over the course of the serialization. Other than that, very little changed.

When you add another person, you first need to prepare a workspace for them. There is also the question of whether the assistants get along with one another [laughs]. From a technical standpoint, someone also needs to have reached a certain level before you can immediately entrust them with the work.

For many readers, the daily reality of being a manga artist is difficult to imagine. What did a typical day or week look like during serialization? Did your working style change as BLEACH became more successful?

It wasn’t a particularly healthy lifestyle. I would stay awake until late at night, go to sleep around four or five in the morning, and wake up at about eleven. That said, I’m someone who needs sleep, so even during serialization I always made sure to get at least six hours. I think I would have struggled much more mentally if I hadn’t slept properly.

I wasn’t drawing continuously for every hour that I was awake. I’m not someone who can maintain concentration for long stretches, so I would focus intensely for a short period, draw as much as I could, and then rest my mind for a while. I repeated that cycle throughout the day.

Even after BLEACH became successful, my basic routine didn’t really change. But as the series became more popular, I received more requests for things like color pages and cover illustrations, so gradually I had less and less free time.

As a general weekly schedule, I would spend about three days developing the story and creating the name, or storyboard, then another three days drawing the finished pages, and take the remaining day off. At my fastest, I could ink around 15 pages in a single day. I think most artists would manage around five, so I was probably quite fast.

Was there a period during the fifteen-year-long weekly serialization that you found particularly difficult?

The hardest times were when I was physically unwell but still had to keep drawing. Back then, Weekly Shonen Jump wasn’t the kind of place where you could easily take a break just because you had a cold. I imagine things are different today, but in my time, taking a hiatus simply wasn’t something that happened very often.

I remember catching the flu once and telling them, “I really can’t do it this time.” Even then, the editor-in-chief called me and asked, “Are you sure it’s actually influenza?” [laughs].

Emotionally, I also found it difficult whenever Ichigo was going through particularly dark moments. During the Lost Agent Arc, just before the final storyline, Ichigo was pushed to his emotional limits. It happened to be around that same time that my own health started to decline.

Until then, I didn’t think I was the type of creator who absorbed my protagonist’s emotions. But that experience made me realize that I was far more affected by Ichigo’s mental state than I had ever imagined.

During the long serialization of BLEACH, you received an anonymous letter from a seriously ill child that urged you to continue the series and end it the way you wanted to, without compromise. How did that letter affect you?

After many years of serialization, I was going through a period when my health had deteriorated. The letter arrived during that time, and it gave me a reason to keep pushing forward and continue drawing until the end. It became a major source of support. I believe the letter arrived sometime during the final arc.

Three months after the serialization ended, I publicly asked for information, and that was how we were eventually connected. Later, I was able to get in touch with one of the child’s friends, and I was also able to send a message in return to his family.

Many readers believe BLEACH established a blueprint that has influenced a new generation of manga. Do you see it that way, and if so, what do you think that blueprint is?

People often say that the captains of the Gotei 13 influenced the Hashira in Demon Slayer, or that concepts like Bankai inspired aspects of Jujutsu Kaisen.

The creators of those series have told me that they were influenced by BLEACH, so I think it’s fair to say that influence exists. But I don’t think influence is something that flows in only one direction. It’s something that’s passed from one generation of creators to the next.

When I was a child, I absolutely loved the anime Saint Seiya. The Gold Saints left a huge impression on me, and the Gotei 13 captains were my own interpretation of that kind of powerful ensemble cast.

That’s how creativity evolves. Every generation of creators absorbs ideas from the works they admire, reinterprets them through their own perspective, and transforms them into something entirely new. That’s what influence has always been.

Since your debut in 1996, how do you think the manga industry has changed? In particular, how do you view the rise of self-publishing and online platforms?

I think it has become much easier for new artists to enter the industry and compete, and I see that as a very positive development.

Ten or fifteen years ago, when people began posting their work online for free and using social media to build an audience, I remember thinking, “Is that really a good idea?” or “Isn’t it a waste to give your work away for free?”

But that was simply based on the way I thought at the time, and looking back, I was completely wrong [laughs]. Now there are far more ways for new creators to share their work and find readers. I think it has become a much more accessible environment

What advice would you give to someone who wants to become a manga artist?

Compared to the past, it is much easier to pursue a career as a manga artist now. So I would encourage people to keep trying and take as many opportunities as they can. Manga artists can actually earn a more stable living than people might think [laughs].

Nearly a decade passed between the end of the original anime series and the adaptation of the final arc, Thousand-Year Blood War. Why did you decide to add new material that had not appeared in the manga?

Around ten years passed between the end of the previous anime series and the beginning of the new one. There were fans who had been waiting throughout that entire period, so I didn’t want to simply adapt the manga exactly as it was. I wanted to give them something more.

For that reason, we added parts that I had omitted when drawing the original manga, as well as elements that I hadn’t been able to fully depict at the time. There are new developments in every episode that even readers of the manga don’t already know, so I think they’ve been enjoying that.

Now I guess we wait and see when this supposed 'Hell Arc' is going to be announced. I thought it would have happened by now. Maybe after Sakamoto?

I need this yesterday though not at the sacrifice of Sakamoto days. Having bleach again will be amazing.

Kubo confirming Bleach is inspired in Saint Seiya (something obvious) is pretty nice. Hopefully that gives Saint Seiya some visibility in 2026 aka its 40th anniversary year.
Didn't he say that many times before? Soul Society's arc is so obviously inspired by the Sanctuary arc it's impossible to not make the connection if you ever watched or read Saint Seiya. I think Kubo mentioned before as well about how much Kurumada influenced him as a mangaka, Bleach's emotional core really is something that could only come from someone who grew up idolizing Kurumada.

I'm not sure if it'll ever be more visible in the US (probably not), but it's a huge series pretty much everywhere else. You see parodies often in japanese stuff as one of the main examples of nekketsu and it's one of the classics in most of the world with new projects all the time for this audience. Few franchises get as much love as Seiya.

Yeah, "after the anime," "after end Sakamoto," "at Jump Festa," "in 2027" - what's the next excuse? Obviously, if you claim an hell arc announcement is coming every month, you'll hit it eventually, but don't act like you knew it all along like some insiders this summer (Broseph, not talking about you, just generally speaking)

Lots of people use it, it's botted as hell and anything counts as views on Twitter, even just scrolling by this algorithm bait slop. It's just the usual nostalgia trash and JP Twitter always giving engagement to anything negative.

Could just be old heads. I saw someone in the quotes of that tweet basically say that people have said that for 20 years but they go on to say they agree now lol

Translation:
I've been a subscriber for about 25 years. It's been around 20 years now that has-beens who quit reading Jump keep saying the same old line about how the current lineup sucks and Jump's no good anymore just by glancing at it. Every time I heard that line, I'd get pissed off and mutter to myself, "But right now's the most fun it's ever been..." while reading, but honestly, the current Jump really is the least fun it's ever been in its entire history.
Doesnt really mean anything though. Ever since X got automatic translation I see JP thoughts on manga and anime more often than not and they’re not as different from the West as you think lol. I learned that quick from following Japanese One Piece discourse. If you think Gear 5 can be divisive in English speaking communities, it’s significantly more explosive on the Japanese side. It’s just online discourse at the end of the day

This is an issue in West too. People don't like current Jump because they are too attached to their 10s series. I can't picture the Keze guy for example trying to check current Jump because that attachment to 10s series and laziness to try to check anything new.

Have they considered reading other magazines for their mental health? Other manga, these aren't the only 15 manga out there.

A bunch of the quotes are whining about how there are no good manga left (which is so blatantly untrue).

It's all nostalgia-boomer nonsense, these people should probably find different hobbies.

I’m going through the quotes on it just cause I find this stuff interesting and it’s funny because their discourse is so similar to the Western fanbases

There’s a tweet from someone complaining about how half the magazine is romcoms and gag and wishing for more ‘Jump-style battle’. Stvie you are not alone lmao
