Now that I finally had some time to take a break from work, I'm here to drop my thoughts. Long story short, this fight was extremely disappointing for me. Laxus and Mira are my absolute favorites, and seeing Mashima treat them with this level of disrespect really pisses me off. I've got nothing against Elfman getting the spotlight—it was actually pretty cool and made sense, even if it didn't really raise his overall combat tier. But did it really have to interrupt Laxus and Mira's fight? He could've easily just given Elfman his own exclusive dragon to deal with, man. Laxus and Mira haven't gotten any new powers since Alvarez, while Elfman has already unlocked like five new ones in 100 Years Quest. I'm genuinely hoping the fight against Levia isn't over yet, because honestly, what a letdown.
Putting all my hate for this chapter aside, a few things are actually worth pointing out:
- Take Over isn't a hax limited by power levels.
- Mirajane really did absorb all the demons from Tartaros just like she claimed before. Using the thorns was cool, but I would've preferred Memento Mori.
- Destroying a demon's book doesn't strictly mean they're wiped out completely—Zeref destroyed Mard Geer's book and Mirajane still managed to absorb his residual energy anyway, so she probably absorbed Larcade too.
- Did Mirajane and Laxus really just casual-diff a dragon? Even though it was a Unisson Raid, they didn't even use any crazy new techniques, it just looked like their normal everyday moves.
- What on earth did Elfman and Hoteye do with Farris's books?
- Where is Laxus's dragon soul? Where is Laxus's new power?
Anyway, a bunch of questions. At the end of the day, the only thing that actually fully pleased me in this chapter was Mira's flashback explaining how Take Over works. We've been missing that explanation since the original manga.
