The horrible performance of most manga serialized under Saito's reign (Someone Hertz was the sole survivor of 2025 ffs) have shown that the current editors are a complete disaster. Manga that while good, were obviously too niche for the magazine (Beethoven, Ping Pong, Ekiden), extremely generic and by-the-rules titles (Embers, Harukaze, DttF, and to some degree Shinobi), completely mismanaged titles with obvious signs of editor intervention (Kaedegami, Alien Headbutt, Kinato, Otr), obvious duds (Hakutaku, Nice Prison, Gonron, Mage, Hero Girl), a bunch of zombies that refuse to die (Kiyoshi, Under Doctor, Animal Signal, HAL), and just two titles that can be considered successful (Ichi and Someone Hertz, and I'm sure Ichi was pitched by Nakano before Saito became the new EiC). It's a mystery how Saito hasn't been fired yet.
Well first off follow the rules here please. But second, Saito had me concerned when I first heard he was announced as EiC, however yes last year was pretty weak. So far this year has been exceptional. The fact that we could get 5 plus hits from 2026 shows so much promise. Sure there are some genres that need filling in but I am happy with what I got that show potential for the newer artists and that there is variety again. Of course yes I can praise Nakano every now and then when the experimental choices become a success, but Saito is showing more range despite a few SoL and romantic aspects that were known from what he launched as an editor in Weekly Shonen Jump.

So yes, Saito has now gained my trust. I know that next year we might not get any hits, let alone one hit. However, would I sacrifice anything in the magazine right now for that? Absolutely not from me.

Pretty underwhelming batch for my tastes. Without sounding too much like a caveman, I’m on the stvie side right now. Sakamoto is about to end, we need battle series

And I’m thinking that Bleach rumor was bunk as of now. Too bad I was actually looking forward to Adult Ichigo arc

Saito is trying to appeal to me specifically by bringing back all these authors I personally really like (Shun Numa, Hokami, now Gondaira), but it won't work.

I'll probably eat up Hizuki-san because I love Yozakura to death, but yeah, didn't really wow me with this batch like I thought was going to happen. I'll just take this as a chance to hope that Graykeith and Ura can use these series as a chance to establish themselves for long term success.

How are Animal Signal and Hal zombies lol. They're literally at 19 and 20 chapters currently, they're surviving a single axe round.
I honestly forgot that there are only 20 episodes so far. AS presents a different story every week, which makes it feel like a longer manga (and I thought of HAL using AS as a reference, lol).

Well first off follow the rules here please.
Sorry. I tend to be "too honest" with my opinions, but I didn't call these manga "bad" just to offend anyone.

This maybe a hot take, but I am in the camp for Animal Signal to be axed. It’s cute and educational and all, but I need more so it has a certain “factor” that is all around appealing and draws me in more.
I think Animal Signal has a pretty small audience and demographic that skews younger. I “like“ the concept, but it doesn’t “interest“ me enough to follow it.

Another rom/sports to try to fill in bb's shoes oof.
Just saw that cover of the one-shot he did, and….heh, looks like it will be Blue Box with a dash of extra spice.

Hard disagree on Kiyoshi but otherwise pretty much agree on everything else

From what I talked with others about this, one suspects it maybe for little kids who don’t have the allowance to buy the volumes. Can’t argue against that since it could make sense as it does have that appeal despite some things that do feel “older”.

The concept of Animal Signal is heavily reliant on having a magnificent artists like Horikoshi to play around with all the anthropomorphic designs.
Taishi Tsutsui is such a mediocre artist. He adds nothing to the gimmick.

Yeah, that’s probably what I’ve been feeling about Animal Signal. Tsutsui is not a bad artist by any means, it’s pretty average tbh.

I am currently rereading High School Family as a project. I know that I was not happy with it or Nakama’s type of story but I am giving it and him another chance to see if I can change my mind. I think the greatest thing to do as a comedy writer is come up with good characters and writing. As for the art, I know its subjective but I think for Saito and Nakama it should be stated very clearly in the beginning that it will be a permanent place in the back as well as for it to feel short in page count like how it was with Nakama’s previous series Isobe Isobe and especially with how it started with Pyu to Fuku Jaguar. At least the latter was stated back in 2000 and the author already had credibility and recognition from his previous series Sexy Commando Gaiden!.

If that was the case, don’t do it like with Yokai Buster Murakami because it was not good. I mean I dropped it after chapter 2 and even by putting it in the back really didn’t do it any favors when there was that reputation since Shugomaru.

Animal Signal's first chapter was featured in Saikyo Jump. It's pretty obvious that the original plan for Animal Signal was for it to be a title explicitly aimed at young children (kinda like Roboco), although who knows if the plan has changed given the poor sales of the first volume and the recent shift in the manga's dynamics (it went from Kokone's actions prompting Tsubasa to recite animal trivia to Tsubasa becoming the main protagonist with the dog cops as recurring characters, while Kokone becomes less and less relevant).

Actually going back to something like the Mage next door, that was a serialization of a pre-existing oneshot. (And once again Demon Lord + Hero was a popular one). Drawn to the Fire and Harukaze mound were also fairly popular oneshots as well.
But overall, if a oneshot runs in jump, then jump does get some data from both survey votes and social media. And so I don't really see any fault in them trying to serialize those. (This is in regards to both GFC submissions, and generic oneshots).
Like if you're looking at current/recent jump, One Piece was originally a oneshot (this was 30 years ago tho lol). Then the newest batch, Ura and Graykeith both ran as oneshots last year, and they clearly are not instant failures. We also have Nue, Kiyoshi, Chojo, Blue Box, Undead Unluck, and so many others.
These are all the oneshots that they directly ran and ended up being successful. Of course there's others that floundered, but its a tried and tested strategy. Its not like they're running these series blind, they had previous feedback where people either voted for the survey, or praised it online. Hero and Demon Lord was really popular on social media, a similar thing also happened to the Blue Box oneshot. And yet one failed while one succeeded. So its not perfect, but its also not the worst method ever, every EiC has done it.

I mean I love Tsutsui’s art and think he is talented. When it comes to writing I can’t judge it on this since he isn’t the writer. The thing I think that separates those two when it does come to their writing individually is the risk factor they take. Unfortunately for Tsutsui, I think he plays it safe and doesn’t stretch past beyond his comfort zone which can also make the art feel that way sometimes.
