after reading the latest chapter i kinda wondered why the shifter titans gave up, so i thought about it for a while then i started coming up with scenarios and ideas about what could be happening and i came up with a big theory about the entire manga. so ill start from the beginning.
THEORY:
in the beginning before titans started attacking the "ape" titan was the scientist who created the first titans. he did it in secret because his research was deemed inhumane. so he created a area where he could experiment on humans that he trapped. in the beginning he invented the first titan shifter that i will call beta colossal titans who were around 40 meters tall and had fast hardening abilities, but when the test subjects became aware of their powers they escaped the "home town".
when the scientist found out what happened the s.o.b created a new form of titans that didn't need humans to control and had them kill off all humans they came in contact with so that he wouldn't be caught and in some hope that the shifters would be eaten too. but instead of dieing one by one the shifters combined their powers and formed the 3 walls to save the remaining people. but they left behind their children back in the town with scientist who now is keeping them captive with his titan army.
this second generation became the new test subjects because the scientist needed humans to control more powerful titans. and he decided to give up on the first generation assuming they were all dead. years later a plague hit and Dr jager came up with the cure and saved everyone in the walls. when the second generation found out about what happened they began imagining that maybe he could find a way to save everyone again, so they contact grisha and explain everything to him.
grisha agrees to help them and decided to live near the walls so that the worriors could sneak past the gate and deliver samples to the dr. soon after dr. jager finally develops the power to control the titans similar to the ape titan and was about to show aren that when in the first episode that they will be free soon. but shortly before that the messengers were attacked and a sample was stolen by either ymirs mother or ymir herself.
curious as to why people were missing the ape titan found out about the plan and demanded that the second generation had to invade the walls and kill everyone. because he was unsure of what was behind the walls he couldnt go and regular titans are to stupid to break through. when they refused he began to threaten their children that he will kill their parents so this 3rd generation (riener, berholdt) launch a attack on the walls
and thus started the story.
what i think that erens dad injected him was a small sample of the aps power and that a more powerful version is hidden in his lab in the basement that will allow eren to control the titans power at his whim instead of requiring extreme emotion.

when eren used his power everyone felt a connection and began to give up so i predict that in the next few chapters the ape titan is going to attack the walls with a titan army and kill alot of people. while the shifters are going to live in the woods because they failed and cannot come back home.
