Hey,
I'm a little afraid that this thread might become dominated by repeating lists or already exists and I couldn't find it, but still, I'm curious and was looking for such a thread :)

I wonder what are the characters you can sympathize with the most? Naruto fortunately focusses alot on showing us the backgrounds and motives of many characters, even in fillers.

I guess (don't know for certain), the thing making a character really likeable to me is naivete.
Goethe distinguished between two kinds of naivete, sadly that's hard to express in english since it's based on two different meanings of "childish":
-The stupid-like childishnes, ignoring knowledge and experience when making decisions
-The innocent-like childish which means trustfulness and unbiasedness

My top three:
3 - Naruto: Never giving up and overcame his sad past of lonelieness. Now he's the moral heir of Jiraiya and the 3rd and 4th hokage in his attempts of bringing mutual understanding to the world. He's naive in the way of pursuing his utopia although it seems something that can't be ever accomplished.

2-Itachi/Kisame: Poor Itachi, only wanting peace and ending in a most painful situation, yet "He died with a smile on his face" to his own brothers after becoming the obstacle to overcome and target of all hatred... He certainly had a sad death.
As for Kisame... he isn't dead yet, but we can see now what an emotional person he really is deep down. He's clearly ready to sacrifice his own life for the person that ended his dystopia of a world that contains nothing but lies and has unending trust to him. He's all raging about a simple memory he wants to protect!
The last roar of a man who finally found his place!
Yet everybody detests him as a monster and he doesn't even expect to be understood by anyone. He sacrificed any chance on a bond when he did Kirigakure's dirty jobs of betrayal and knew it and must've been so touched by Madara that he goes so far to protect his plans and face..

1 - Haku/Zabuza: Having experienced the same loneliness as Naruto in his childhood, Haku had much more pain by seeing his father murdering his mother and killing his father afterwards without knowing. Yet he remains the forgiving person who doesn't want to kill even his enemies and was desperately searching for someone who needs him and remains naive in the best sense.
He managed it to become the pupil of the "Monster of Kirigakure" with a single sentence and without ever adopting his brutal style. Remaining innocent with Zabuza as sensei! Even Zabuza was clearly touched by this boy...

Their end was so sad when Zabuza finally showed his human emotions :crying
