Everybody (including Naruto) assume that he can't do genjutsu. What I find hilarious is that he is the master of genjutsu, just not the traditional kind.
What the show should realize is that there are 2 types of genjutsu...the type that Kurenai uses and the kind that Naruto uses.
1: Kurenai uses normal genjutsu, which is the kind that uses a lot of chakra to cause the victim to see what the caster wants them to see eg: Kurenai seeming to slowly disappear in front of Kisame.
2: Naruto uses natural genjutsu, mostly using Kage Bunshin, to show the opponent what they expect to see eg: everybody (except Hinata, but especially Neji) expected Naruto to be weaker and to lose to Neji, yet not once, but twice, Naruto fooled everyone in the stadium into believing Neji had won, first with Neji hitting the tenketsu on the clone he thought had to be Naruto because it was holding back and Neji assumed that's what Naruto would do, and second, when Naruto left a Kage Bunshin in the crater in the ground and Neji again assumed he had won (before Naruto surprised him by popping out of the ground and nailing him).
So when you think of it, he's even better at genjutsu than Kurenai...he even fooled Sandaime and Orochimaru!
What do you think?
