By melee combat, I mean hand-to-hand fight with no magical weapon and very limited magic use. Things like Erza's Benizakura, Laxus' Roaring Thunder and Makarov's giant form are forbidden for obvious reasons. And let's only include human characters/forms - it would make absolutely no sense if anyone is to go on a hand-to-hand combat with, say, Aldoron.
Surely we've already had a power ranking thread, but when it comes to melee combat, the result would be vastly different. For instance, Hades was miles stronger than Tenrou arc Laxus overall, but he got stomped in a melee combat. Despite Zeref's immense magic power, he could only fight with base Natsu toe-to-toe in a hand-to-hand fight.
IMHO the best melee fighters in FT (that I can think of) are:
1. Acnologia - blitzed God Serena, took 7 dragon slayers - Laxus included - like nothing, no explanation needed really
2. August - single-handedly (literally) stomped an enraged Gildarts in a melee combat, which is especially impressive considering his age; other people at his age show no impressive melee feats at all
3. Aldoron - blitzed Natsu, not a chance until nerfed by the death of other four seeds
4. *Larcade - casually blocked Kagura's sword attack with one finger (not sure if it counts though, might as well be his magic ability)
5. Laxus - probably beat up Madmole, who could tank FDK Natsu's attack with ease, in a melee combat (looking at the lump on his face)
6. Gildarts - just a solid fighter, might be above Laxus, not sure but he has yet to show more melee feats post-TS
Not sure about the rest. I didn't include Suzaku - he blitzed people only because of his Sword Drawing Art (抜刀術), I don't think he could still blitz without the magic sword. Mercphobia and Selene showed no impressive melee feats in their human forms neither.
What's your opinion?
