After re watching and re-reading the series, I realized something.

Togashi hinted, during the Heaven's Arena arc, that there's an arena setup beyond what's at Heaven's Arena. If a 200+ floor fighter can beat the floor masters, they get to progress into this next arena, a biennial event known as Battle Olympia. We're presently headed into the Dark Continent arc, where supposedly things that are a threat to all of humanity live. If our MC's manage to survive the boat ride and the Dark Continent, and then return from it, could we be headed into the Battle Olympia tournament? It's also stated that there is a rather big prize for winning the Battle Olympia tournament, but both the manga and the anime cut off the registration girl before she could disclose anything about it.

i dont really see any of the important characters fighting in heavens arena, leave alone in a tournament like that.

None of the is lured by money, and HIsoka and Chrollo got their own business to settle.

The only way i could see a fight there is if hisoka survives as long and gon gets his nen back and they decide to have a fair match up there. But really, there is much more important business to settle and the DC arc will probably be very long and might end the manga

Hisoka said he won't fight Gon here again. Death matches do exist but I doubt Gon would like to fight to the death in this place. I think Gon could go there but before going to the DC, in order to train. Zushi and Wing should still be there too. I was expecting to see at least one of them during the Hisoka VS Chrollo fight but Togashi didn't draw them.

Well, that is one thing Gon could do in order to get stronger, even if he doesn't get his Nen back. But the thing is, he doesn't have time to go there, train, AND somehow get onto the boat unless Togashi's next chapter reads "X amount of time ago" to start, and then veers off into Gon's training or nen reawakening, followed by the series of events that get Killua/Gon to the DC. It'd be kind of awkward and forced story telling, IMHO.

Shionoro, I'd like to remind you of why Issac Neterro came back from the DC. Ultimately, he wound up returning because although the entities and beasts/creatures over there are insanely strong, they lacked the kind of human ingenuity that made fighting interesting and challenging for Neterro. I'll grant that we have no idea if he faced any of the calamities or not. Gon in particular has shown that he gets excited by the prospect of facing an enemy that is potentially stronger, faster, smarter, or some combination of the three (you can see it by the way he acts around Hisoka).

So what do you feel our main characters will do if they discover that the Dark Continent, while challenging in terms of things like endurance and pure brutality, doesn't cut it when challenging them on an intellectual level? I feel like in that case, the Battle Olympia arena could put our mc's at a level where they have to start dipping into their adjacent classes in order to accomplish something. It'd mean new trainers, new enemies (because let's face it... not everyone is going to survive the DC arc), and of course that prize that Togashi hinted at but never revealed.

Also, with the series being titled "Hunter X Hunter"... idk, it'd just feel weird if it ended on "Hunter X Calamity".

I think after this DC ark we are ready for a time skip of some years. And I would love to see Gon being portrayed as a villain.

Worst if it ended on a Dark Continent Tournament =/

Hmm, i never read our mains as being overtly fighthungry except for gon, and even he has other interests.
For example, gon wanted to play the game on GI properly instead going arround and beating or even killing people by raw strength, even if good fight alternatives would have been there. If gon gets his nen back, i see a tremendous thrill for him in exploring the wildlife of the dark continent.
Killuah is not interested in fighting, he did it to get jobs done, but he was rather enjoying being dominant than the thrill of the fight.
Kurapika seems to somewhat enjoy fighting when he is on his own, but with his origin story in the way, he does not care for anything else.
And leorio simply never was a fighter. He likes to brawl when he is mad, but he is by no means a martial artist.

I always read the fact that togashi never showed us the prize as the same as him not showing us gon's mother: It is irrelevant to the maincharacter. It shows us that the world of fame and money has nothing to offer for those two. They are not interested in whatever prize it might be, because there are things they set out to do that money can't buy.
We don't know whether gon will ever get his nen back (yes, it would be a sure bet he will in other shonen, but i would not put it beyond togashi to have him being a support character for the second part of this story) and i see the DC as being a bigger thrill or goal for all four mains than any battle tournament could be.

Leorio learns under cheadle, which is a big help for him.
Kurapica is only interested in the eyes and possibly the spider, and those will be on the DC.
Gon is out of the picture for now and he always loved exploring things.
And Killuah? Who knows what he is up to right now, but going high profile on the battle tournament is the complete opposite of keeping alluka safe.

The only character i could imagine there is zushi. He was suspiciously absent in the fight hisoka vs chrollo.
I could see Zushi being included into the story more after some time.
If he kept training every day, unlike gon and killuah, he might be on a very high level even if he did not have their talent.

UNlike you, i would see the DC as a great final arc for this manga, because i feel like the DC is everything that HxH embodied.
The unknown, people having to work together, people having to smart their way arround obstacles instead using brute force and lots of intrigue.

If the manga ends in a big battle tournament, that would be a worse option to me, because HxH contains almost no real fair and square one on one fights.
It's almost always fights in which one character has a big advantage and the other has to try to outsmart him (which may or may not work).
Big battle tournament arcs make sense in manga with more even fights, like dragon ball or one piece (even if one piece didnt have one).
Fights like rob lucci vs luffy make great entries in such arcs, where character punch it out until one finally falls.
But i think it would get kind of tedious in HxH because there actually are not that many 'warrior' characters in HxH who go for fair one on one fights anyway, so togashi would have to either invent very artificial reasons for other characters to fight in the tournament or invent lots of new characters who are insanely strong but who we have never heard about, which would be kind of strange since we saw all the big shots of the hunter organization by now.

Also: The people who fight in this final tournament are most likely floor masters, because the 20 floor masters are the strongest fighters in heaven's arena.
And Kastro was said to be as strong as a floor master. Given that he might have won a lot with his trick, but this does not let me think that the battle in the final tourney are of a higher quality than what we have seen so far.
Really insanely strong people like netero, botobai, ging or biscuit dont seem to have the slightest interest in fighting there, even if netero searched for a worthy opponent and biscuit is a martial artist herself.
I think the bigshots going to DC are stronger than the people fighting at the top pf heaven's.

Which would be somewhat reminiscent of the Chimera Ant arc at best. To me, that would demonstrate that Gon took away nothing from his fight with Pitou, from encountering the Ants or from Kite's transformation. Look, I know he can be a bit thick headed, but his getting excited at the prospect of the DC is only going to show some serious character regression. It should have taught him to seek out people, not beasts or things that don't belong in his world.

Killuah is not interested in fighting, he did it to get jobs done, but he was rather enjoying being dominant than the thrill of the fight.
Now his interest lies in protecting his sibling. Both from his own family, and from other threats. Although we don't know exactly what Zzygg's interactions were with the DC, it's fairly safe to assume that Alluka's powers stem from one of the calamities there, probably because Zzygg either knowingly or unknowingly brought part of the dark continent back with him. Killua is not done dealing with his family by a long shot, and seeking out anything in the DC would only be a means of protecting Alluka. It doesn't change the fact that Illumi is not going to stop chasing him, or that his mother and father will keep trying to bring him back into the fold too. Then you also have the method his other brother is using to try to bring him home- going through the spiders. The DC may represent equal parts escape and discovery, but unless Togashi decides to have the entire Zoldyeck family challenge Killua there, he'll be back in his own world to face them down. And if he can set the time and place, as well as the traps, Battle Olympia would be the place to do it- they're sort of expecting things to get blown to hell and back, anyway.

Kurapika seems to somewhat enjoy fighting when he is on his own, but with his origin story in the way, he does not care for anything else.
I disagree. He seems to be somewhat affectionate and/or fond of Leorio. We see him holding Woble, and his world begins to change. He hasn't forgotten his past, but he's learning what it means to have some depth of humanity. He isn't going to get that in the Dark Continent.

And leorio simply never was a fighter. He likes to brawl when he is mad, but he is by no means a martial artist.
He didn't develop that warp punch out of nowhere. He hit Ging from across an entire auditorium, and can even use his abilities to locate hidden blockages, obstructions, etc. inside a human body. We saw Ging demonstrate what can be done with that kind of talent. Sure, he started out in the wrong style.... but look how it evolved after that. If he continues with the secondary talent, he could well start manipulating an opponent's insides- cause an aneurysm, a heart attack, etc, from across a room without the victim even being aware of what was happening to them. Which would put him on par with the Battle Olympia vets, at least. He might even find a teacher, if Ging gets fed up with the way Cheadle is guiding him.

I always read the fact that togashi never showed us the prize as the same as him not showing us gon's mother: It is irrelevant to the maincharacter.
I'm more of the opinion that Togashi doesn't write things into the actual story without reason.

It shows us that the world of fame and money has nothing to offer for those two. They are not interested in whatever prize it might be, because there are things they set out to do that money can't buy.
Wasn't Leorio's stated reason for becoming a Hunter to earn money? :)

We don't know whether gon will ever get his nen back (yes, it would be a sure bet he will in other shonen, but i would not put it beyond togashi to have him being a support character for the second part of this story) and i see the DC as being a bigger thrill or goal for all four mains than any battle tournament could be.
If he goes to the DC as a support character, that means Togashi will kill him. Which is an interesting twist, but he wanted a boring mc to showcase his other characters better (in his own words). The spotlight was on Gon in Chimera Ant, it's moving more towards Leorio and Kurapika now. And as neither of them are really all that boring... where does that leave Gon?

Training, learning, and trying to improve himself as he always has. The tournament is a perfect spot for him.

Leorio learns under cheadle, which is a big help for him.
Judging by the argument Ging had with her, she's more of a hindrance than a help in many ways. Too many blind spots, an unwillingness to consider alternatives, and not enough connections to those around her to have been able to win the one competition we've seen her in. She just isn't on Pariston or Ging's level.

The only character i could imagine there is zushi. He was suspiciously absent in the fight hisoka vs chrollo.
I could see Zushi being included into the story more after some time.
If he kept training every day, unlike gon and killuah, he might be on a very high level even if he did not have their talent.

Bear in mind that you know next to nothing about the setup in Battle Olympia. The ones at HA were already pretty much "anything goes."

It's almost always fights in which one character has a big advantage and the other has to try to outsmart him (which may or may not work).
Big battle tournament arcs make sense in manga with more even fights, like dragon ball or one piece (even if one piece didnt have one).

Did you find any artificial reasoning behind the Chrollo vs. Hisoka fight, or the first fight in which Killua faced Zushi and got impacted by Zushi's ren?

Togashi uses the battle tournaments, things like the Hunter Exam, etc. in order to introduce plot elements, characters, and motivations. If you were to ask people which Arc was their favorite, I've seen Yorknew hailed the most (because Spiders and also because Chimera Ant dragged on far too long for most people). People hail the ant king learning humanity as the pinnacle story/point of that arc. And where did Meruem inherit that capability, because it wasn't in his nature initially?

His food, or diet, while he was in the womb was shifting and altering his thought processes, enabling him to make distinctions and establishing a foundation for his character development. The ants themselves were interesting because they remembered some, or all, of the person they consumed in order to be born- and it shaped their paths.

As far as strong fighters we've never heard of, there is also this little thing called the Blacklist. Those people would not be on it if they weren't strong enough to withstand those who are inside the Hunter Organization as Blacklist Hunters. The spiders may be a class A bounty. If Hisoka kills most of them and Kurapika finishes them off, Kurapika just needs to find the eyes. He flat out admitted he was turning up nothing until Miazaistorm showed up with a lead. The very first thing we see him doing after the hunter exam is looking for shadier jobs.

I think the bigshots going to DC are stronger than the people fighting at the top pf heaven's.
They're two separate tournaments. They fight for glory in HA. What do they fight for in Battle Olympia?

@Terahawk You are being too harsh with Cheadle. She is competent and everyone agrees in the Zodiacs, it's just that she can't deal with people like Ging and Pariston.

I think the last arcs will be in the DC, It's the ultimate challenge for a Hunter after all. Kurapika and Leorio are already going there and are Zodiacs. They will progress there and maybe even get stars at their return. I am expecting Killua to work fully as a Hunter now, while keeping protecting Alluka of course. Gon's situation is pretty much the opposite currently. He has no goal and no Nen, he will have to get his Nen back and find a new goal. He too could start doing something other than hunting Ging and maybe get Stars. He could go to the Heavens Arena in order to get more experience fighting Nen users, train and meet Win and Zushi. Killua could go back there too but I am expecting Gon to go there first. Both could even have a battle there.

Gon is obviously the one who likes to fight the most, Killua enjoys it too albeit much less than him, he also likes to kill. The others are not particularly fond of it but I don't see how it matters anyway. Martial ability is necessary for them and they train. Leorio clearly was some kind of street fighter. His physical abilities and knife skills were excellent.

Wasn't Leorio's stated reason for becoming a Hunter to earn money?
His original goal was to become a doctor, and as he explained, the studies cost a fortune, so that's why he wanted the license to have enough money. For him money is just the means, not the end.

The ants themselves were interesting because they remembered some, or all, of the person they consumed in order to be born- and it shaped their paths.
There is a slight correction here, if the ants you are talking about are the soldier ants, then they never got their personalities from devouring some human, it's their own original personalities of when they were humains, before getting devoured by the queen. The memories you speak of are their past life memories as humains.

I read that character very different than you. I don't think Gon wen tthrough character developement about not wanting to fight monsters and explore the wild.
Gon would be totally fine with doing that and even dying while doing that. He just got mad because Kite was so important to him and he felt guilt about being the reason Kite died.
If Gon takes his buddy Killuah and they go on their own into the wild to explore, that is always an exciting thing for him he loves to do, and i dont think that changed much.
He simply cannot do it now because he has no nen. I can see him joining kite's group (which are also no fighters) and go explore with them.
I always felt like exploring was even more fun to him than fighting. The time gon was the happiest in the manga in my opinion was when he won greed island and when he brought killuah home.
There were stronger opponents waiting for him in heaven's arena, but his appeal was to see what is at the top. When Gon and killuah were told what's at the top, they simply stopped caring. That is a strong indication for me that gon seeks mystery and unknown more than fighting.

I don't see Killuah wanting to fight his family in serious fights, except maybe his brother Illumi. And the Zoldyeks are not exactly the type of guys who agree to time and date.
If they want to kill alluka, they do it the second they know killuah's whereabouts. They do it while killuah is fighting and then abandon the fight. They do it after they stages a fight which killuah wins and trail him when he returns to alluka. They do it any way they can.
Going high profile against assassins is never a very good idea in my book.
I disagree. He seems to be somewhat affectionate and/or fond of Leorio. We see him holding Woble, and his world begins to change. He hasn't forgotten his past, but he's learning what it means to have some depth of humanity. He isn't going to get that in the Dark Continent.
I phrased it wrongly. He does care for his friends and other people, but as far as lifegoals go, he abandons everything else for this.
Yes, he saved gon and killuah when he could have killed chrollo, but he also didnt go to help gon when he was in the hospital and his inner monologue tells us that he does not think he can lead a normal life with friends before he settled his business.
The only way kurapika would fight in battle olympia would be to either kill a spider or to get a chrimson eye pair.
Which would put him on par with the Battle Olympia vets, at least. He might even find a teacher, if Ging gets fed up with the way Cheadle is guiding him.
I didnt want to say that leorio cannot fight. He is simply not interested in it. Studying under cheadle is exactly the best he can do to further his lifegoal.
There is no reason not to do it as long as he can.
Money is only the thing he wanted to BECOME a doctor.
There could be a plotline about him needing more money and fighting in heaven's arena, but why would he go to battle olympia? For a usual doctor's purpose, the fights leading up to the nenbattles should be enough.
Everytime he trains his fighting skills is a time in which he does not train to be a better doctor.
I'm more of the opinion that Togashi doesn't write things into the actual story without reason.
It has a reason. The reason is to show us that gon and killuah are not interested in it, to characterize them.
It was the reason why they left heaven's arena. Without it, they would not have left but tried going higher.

But at first he would have to get his nen back. And that cannot be something that just happens offscreen, it is a rather big thing.
If togashi wanted gon to train and fight and whatever, he could have easily done that by not making gon lose his nen and training in heaven's arena because 'he wants to get strong enough to protect kite next time' or some shit like that.
It could be done in a narratively smooth way. But we know that this did not happen, thus i assume that togashi wants to go somewhere with nenless gon, and i can only imagine that to be a supportative characters (which does not mean he has to die, but we will explore gon in a more powerless state than we are used to).

Judging by the argument Ging had with her, she's more of a hindrance than a help in many ways. Too many blind spots, an unwillingness to consider alternatives, and not enough connections to those around her to have been able to win the one competition we've seen her in. She just isn't on Pariston or Ging's level.
Cheadle is one of the most competent characters we know.
Cheadle is, in her field of expertise, above ging and pariston. Ging and Pariston know how to use crazy wildcards to their advantage which noone else sees coming, but cheadles strength lies on the planning side.
Cheadle has to organize the whole organization's actions on the blackwhale, which is something i doubt ging and pariston can do. They are too individualistic for those works of details. They can use other people to get their way, but i don#t think they are very capable in managing large organizations.

Be it as it will: Cheadle's expertise as a doctor is unquestioned. She does have 3 stars for a reason.
She and Sanbica are the best teachers leorio could ever wish for.
But brute force is basically all the DC is. Neterro himself didn't find the kind of intellectual challenge in it that you've just ascribed to it.
I do not think it was about intellectual challenges.
Netero didnt find the fair one on one fights he wanted to fight, but monsters and diseases, which is not his thing.
But exploring such wildlife is partially the thing of our maincharacters. Leorio can study diseases, gon can explore (which netero was never interested in).
Kiraupika and Killuah are the wildcards here because they have other goals completely.
I don't think the DC is just 'brute force'. We know that the calamities partially have other ways of being dangerous than being 'strong'.

Bear in mind that you know next to nothing about the setup in Battle Olympia. The ones at HA were already pretty much "anything goes."
Okay, but it will happen in a confined space and if it is called battle olympia, it is about people fighting each other.
I simply don#t see that as nearly as thrilling as a whole new continent with completely new challenges.
It's not like the DC arc won't have one on one fights, too.

If Hisoka kills most of them and Kurapika finishes them off, Kurapika just needs to find the eyes. He flat out admitted he was turning up nothing until Miazaistorm showed up with a lead. The very first thing we see him doing after the hunter exam is looking for shadier jobs.

No, but to get a significant load of strong characters together, you need artifical reasons. Or you have a tournament without bigshots. No zodiac, no ging, not zoldyek and so on. Because most characters don't have a reason to be there.
Killuah had a reason to be there when he was. So did Chrollo and Hisoka. But none of those had a reason to go higher than they were.
We know for a fact that the strongest chars in HxH are not very interested in going to heaven's arena.
Even someone like hisoka, who seeks thrills for a living, didnt go to battle olympia and didnt even try going higher in heaven's arena (he simply forfeit matches that did not interest him). That tells me that he sees no merit in most of the contestants there.
The Blacklist exists, yes, but the people on it have a good reason to usually be in hiding. The spider for example usually hide and the only reason chrollo could fight on heaven's was because he was not actively searched anymore after the mafia pulled their issue back.

The thing is just: There are lots of characters who strive for battles and glory in HxH, but none of those who actually are strong has ever mentioned that he trains for heaven's arena or BO.
Not netero, not Uvogin, none of the fighting zodiac, not beyond netero, not hisoka.
And if they don#t think that those kind of tournaments offer a lot of entertainment and challenge, i see no reason why i should think so.

As i said, the only characters i can see going there is zuchi.

Wow, i don't know how much credibility those pictures have or whether they are just scribbles, but looking closer on it, the arena and the frigging shadow hand look REALLY scary when you imagine them being very big.
