I think it is cool to get the nod if it brings new active members but if it brings legal issues, it will suck. I will hope for the first option and not the second.

While it is cool that MH has become so famous, it will eventually bring legal actions if we get too much attention ^^;

Let's just hope that it doesn't go any farther than this. I don't think Japan minds that we're spreading their mangas to other countries, as it helps them do more overseas business, but at the same time if their countrymen gets involved with leeching too much, they will get annoyed as that means declining local profits for them.

So as for "new members," actually, we may have to actually ban Japanese IPs just to ensure the site's survival >.> (And not risk angering their companies.)

We'll see, though. It all depends.

That's obviously not our first choice. One of the last things we want to do is not allow people from Japan to join this site. Lots of our translators are there.

wow! that's cool! mangahelpers is really famous... but yeah the legal stuff... :(

hmm... if people from japan are banned (hopefully not) how are the raws gonna come (exception to kylara of course)

how bout people can only leech if they're countinously active members... :sweat (if it becomes really bad)

but hopefully nothing will change. I love this site! :heart :XD

We've never really gotten our RAWs directly from any Japanese members, though. Rather we've had "middle men" that found the RAWs elsewhere on the internet that the Japanese community posts.

The Touch, for example, who provided most of our RAWs the first year, is actually Australian. Dyroness, who helped with RAWs for us at the very beginning of MH's existence (and at Naruto Forums as well), is a girl from Brazil. Most of our current RAW providers here right now, I couldn't name one from Japan.

Even the majority of our translators, even the ones who happen to be in Japan right now, are definitely not Japanese. Still, it's because of the translators who do spend time in Japan that we don't really want to ban the IPs in the first place, as Zinny already mentioned. Let's hope it doesn't come to that at all.

I guess I should mention here that I don't think anybody needs to be too alarmed about it right now. It's just one page's coverage within a magazine right now.

I just wanted everybody to be aware that this may not be necessarily a good thing for us as far as getting more members from Japan. We want MH to continue being relatively inconspicuous in the large scale of things :p

Maybe if we actually understood what the article says then we can make better assumptions. And yes some websites had to ban Japanese IPs after thousands of Japan based downloads of raws took place but like GK said it's too early to take about such thing now and hopefully this won't happen here.

I dunno, aren't we technically safe? None of the RAWs or scans are actually hosted here, and I think the artwork counts as original enough that we wouldn't be in trouble for them.

I say - kick ass!!!!! :D

Yeah, this kind of thing is exactly why we decided to stop hosting RAWs two summers ago, so you guys are likely right - we aren't in any immediate danger because of that.

Wait!!!

I thought this forum is only 100-people strong?? =P

hahaha, this is certainly an interesting news. This place has grown so much since the end of 2005.

how do they get raws outside of japan anyway? snail mail?
i read somewhere sometime ago that kylara actually gets her raws earlier than the people in japan do.... makes no sense to me :headscratch

Well, the magazines finish printing a few days before people can buy them at the stores. After they're printed they get shipped to the Japanese and foreign stores. I guess that Shounen Jump probably starts shipping on Tuesday, so that we get the first confirmed spoiler texts and pics on Wednesday.

Seems that some foreign stores have a pretty fast mail delivery and - unlike the Japanese stores, who have to sell on a specific day (e.g. Shounen Jump = Monday) and aren't allowed to put them out earlier - the foreign stores can already sell as soon as they get the package (e.g. Friday or Saturday). Our foreign RAW scanner are basically lucky to have such a store near to them. The Japanese bookstores in my area don't sell Jump before Monday/Tuesday although it's possible that they get them already on Friday/Saturday.

And others are not RAW scanners but RAW hunters. They're not scanning themself but know where it's possible to find the RAWs at Japanese websites and through Japanese file sharing. It's a pretty time consuming job and you need to know the language good enough to find your way through the sources.
