Now I seen that the hangout thread had a discussion about this but I feel it deserves to be discussed in it's own thread. Now the question many have is, why did Netero go so hard on the King?
Well it's simple really. Netero is a hunter at heart and Meruem was his hunt. But it goes deeper than that of course. Other than the fact that it was his job to exterminate the threat of the Chimera Ant King from the world, this battle was more than that. This was the fight that Netero had been searching for his entire life.
As we see Netero is thankful for everything he has been given in life and everything that has lead him to Meruem. Netero knows that Meruem has to be taken OUT. Meruem is too much of a danger to live. Sure he may be showing that he can value humanity, but at this point in time, Meruem does not understand fully what humanity really means (he discovers this afterwards when Welfin incites the memory of Komugi, but that is another topic altogether). Meruem is of course a danger to the world and must be stopped. But to Netero, he is the fight that he has always searched for, an opponent that pushes him to his utmost limits.
Netero admits to him selfishness, he is enjoying this fight and wants to put Meruem in his place. The fact that he implants himself with the Rose bomb tells us something. It tells him that Netero went their knowing that it would be his final fight. But interestingly enough, I do not believe Netero went in to the fight intending to die, but instead to see whether he was truly alive.
For decades he had not been challenged. He became too powerful. With nothing left to conquer Netero became a bored man, which lead him to become a very eccentric man who much like Hisoka and Pariston, enjoyed having fun above all else. Hisoka enjoys killing powerful opponents, Pariston enjoys trolling intelligent opponents and Netero enjoyed a challenge regardless of it's form. Meruem was the ultimate challenge and in the end, even though he dies in the process, Netero overcomes one last challenge by poisoning and killing the King.
This battle to me is not so much about the King's development but more about Netero's development. We see the truth of this man. He is a man who loves a challenge and after his entire life at such an old age he discovers his ultimate and final challenge and he enjoys every minute of it.
I see Netero's death as a glorious one for a character who died doing what he loved. Sure he was saving the world, but that's not all he was doing. He was doing what he loved above all else - challenging himself.
There is an interesting quote from Netero during this battle that he says to the King that really is quite telling. He says 'You underestimate the limitless malice within the human heart' and he is right. Meruem did not understand or comprehend the lengths that Netero would go to in order to defeat him and ultimately Meruem's undoing was that he underestimated humanity. But just like Meruem realises the limitless malice and darkness within all humans he also discovers the limitless love and light that sits directly beside it within all humans. Light and Shadow, the main theme of Hunter x Hunter. We are all walking that balance. Noone is entirely good and noone is entire bad, it is not possible to have a bit of both within us.
SO what do you think of Netero and Meruem? Let me know your thoughts.
