After finding out that Scarlett Johanson will play Kusanagi san in the Ghost in the Shell live adaptation, and they're already receiving criticism due to characters looking White/European and not Asian like in the anime/manga series...and despite the fact that I'm still heaving from the thought that my favourite anima/manga is being whitewashed with caucasian actors/actresses, and most of the cast being Caucasian too, albeit with a small percentage of them being Asian...
I took it upon myself to take a step back and rethink about character creation in Japanese animation, and looking at most of my favourite Anime and Manga's...I noticed that most of the character that are portrayed look nothing like they're Japanese...if anything they look more European...
the question I'd like to ask you is...
What Race/Nationality would you say best describes the characters in Tokyo Ghoul? Yes the characters have Japanese names and even Japanese fashions, but based on facial features and appearance? Where would you place each character aesthetically? Would you say Touka looks Japanese, is Kaneki Japanese, what about Yomo, Uta, Ukina, Akira, Amon, Arima, Rize, Hide...what nationality/race would you say they are?
