I just thought about it:
There are so many terror in the DC (we know the calamities, the ants, we know there are gigantic creatures everywhere and we saw some pretty scary looking things on the stylized DC map
Look at the shadow hand, at the giantes in the upper right, that strange arena and so on, and keep in mind the wildlife in HxH is already pretty dangerous (see hunter's exam).
There is no reasonable way to let most of the people who set out for the DC survive, and there also does not seem to be a reasonable way to not kill off a good chunk of notable and liked characters along the way.
HxH tends to kill off more of its chars than other shonen, exspecially when it comes to newly introduced characters, but as i imagine it, the DC slaughterings need to look more like a gantz arc than a shonen.
How can togashi handle it without killing off too many beloved characters?
I do not think it would ring well with most readers if ppl like biscuit, Morel or Hanzo died on the DC (and not only one or two of them, but lots of them).
What do you exspect and want to see here?
The DC being a tad tamer than we think it will be?
Personally, i dont like that option. That would have been possible when ging told gon about the DC in the first place, but with all the hype about the calamities being more dangerous than the ants and so many destroyed expeditions alraedy, that is out of question for me.
Personally, I think Togashi will keep introducing a lot new characters (like ging's group and tmep hunters and newby hunters and stuff) so that he has more than enough material to kill them off.
It would also be an interesting turn of events if ging is slowly broken by being unable, even tho he is competent, to protect his own group.
