The MangaHelpers Manga Awards Discussion Thread

[DeBaron8]

Re: The MangaHelpers Manga Awards

Don't know if I can change this, but...

I'd like to withdraw my previous nomination for Best Color Page and vote for One Piece 609, pages 1-2. This spread is truly remarkable!

[saladesu]

Re: The MangaHelpers Manga Awards

Nominations end on December 30th, 2010 so hurry and get your nominations in! You may also change your nominations and votes until then!

DeBaron8, yes you may change your nomination but it would be real helpful if you told us what your earlier nomination was so it is easier for us to switch your nomination from one to the other thank you!

[M3J]

Re: The MangaHelpers Manga Awards

Can I stab you guys for switching nominations?
I don't have a problem with it though, just make sure you guys don't do it constantly for the same category. I wanna do it too, but I'm too lazy to change my nominations. <_<

Oh, and for the best WTF moment, can you guys describe the moment in as short a sentence as possible while being descriptive?

The Manga Awards is really popular though! Thanks so much for participating! We have at least 50 people that have participated, and hopefully we'll see a lot more. I can certainly say we have a great community here!

Invite more people to nominate their favorites! OSCARS! OSCARS! OOOSCAAARS!

Re: The MangaHelpers Manga Awards

Best overall manga
One Piece
It's the series i recommend the most to people that are wanting to know of a good series to read. It's funny, inspiring, and just leaves you feeling amazed after each chapter ^^. I can't get enough of OnePiece and am excited to what new events pan out.

Best new series
shingeki no kyojin
Not sure if this series has seen much attention in other countries, but in Japan it's quite popular. The art is bleh at best, but the story is pretty fresh and fun. If you haven't, check it out, it's about giants that eat small people .

Best plot twist
Naruto

Spoiler

Seeing Gaara and the other ninja from the sand country show up to help konoha beat kimimaro and them really surprised me :O. That was the least thing I was expecting, and it was one of the reasons Naruto *used* to be in my reading list ^^; (notice past tense )

Best artwork
Oyasumi punpun
The art in Oyasumi punpun, I feel, does an amazing job in capturing Japan as it is - as well as proving its a manga with the oddities it likes to throw at you. The characters, and the settings are all drawn beautifully. So much so, I even bought a special art book released.

Best couple
Berserk
Casca and Guts had a rough starting up. But when they were together - however short it may have been, I really felt that they were truely made for each other. So much so that when *that* happened I was literally depressed for a week ._.

Best Chapter
One piece
For this one, it'd have to be the scene where Merry Go says good bye... while it's not the best chapter in terms of a happy end, it is an amazing chapter to have built up so much emotion for a boat - and to have it end there. Oda-sensei is amazing.

Best fight
Naruto
Alright, it's odd to bring Naruto up again even though I don't read it anymore but... The fight with Kimimaro and Rock Lee will forever be a scene in which I was HIGHLY impressed. Drunk Boxing for the win .

Best villain
Gantz
Nurarihyon. Sorry, after seeing that fight with that boss... I could never get into the Nurarihyon no mago series. I mean Oku-sensei totally made Nurarihyon the most wicked boss ever... Who other than him can dress up as a woman made completely out of boobs and kick ass?

Best Seinen
Oyasumi punpun
I'll admit it - I'm a huge Asano Inio fan. The work he does is amazing, and Oyasumi PunPun stands out as one of those series that you can only get from a Seinen work. Again, if you haven't read his works - do so now. It's a bit depressing at times, but well worth it .

Best Shounen
One Piece
Spanding 60 volumes and still going strong - One piece is everything and more of what a shounen manga should be. It covers friendship, growth, and action in such a way that I can call it no less than a masterpiece. It's my favorite - and will always be - unlike other series .

Re: The MangaHelpers Manga Awards

I have to disagree...OP's build is similar as well...and the grand plot is built up gradually...the grand plot being, WG's secret, conflict with Dragon, and the signs that point towards all this...I could say more, but I don't think this is the place, for detailed plot discussion
Just saying that my option would be OP all day long over FT...

Yes, but with over 600 chapters already, I don't see anything that will lead to the grand scheme of things. What I'm talking about is the hints and foreshadowing. And to be honest, OP just has waayyy too many battles that sometimes the story goes off course for a while. What I mean is that the battles take up so much space that the overall story is pretty much put aside. In FT, yes it's quite similar but one thing that Mashima always does and Oda doesn't, is that his story building feels more consistent.

Re: The MangaHelpers Manga Awards

I'd like to finish my nominations...
I support Major Olivia Armstrong from FMA, for Best Female Supporting Character ...
I also support The Breaker: New Waves for Best New Series, because it's just great...
And for Best Manga I nominate Blame! from Nihei...I nominated it in my first post here for best seinen, so if you're curious why I chose this for Best manga then look there

---

I will be absent starting today, so have fun with the Awards! May the best of the best win!
And Happy New Year to everybody!

If there is a limit in this manga, I didn't see it. This manga is Koroshiya Ichi.

Itachi turning out to be good. I'll go in depth for this later once i am on a pc...but for now all i'll say is that judging the unexpectedness, yet the finest seamless fitting of it with loads and loads of previously known details, the impact it had on the plot both before and after the revelation, the impact on the characterization and character interaction of the main characters (which is the core crisis of this manga), the way the whole thing changed complexion only by the establishment of a different perspective without changing the actual event(that is itachi being the one to mass murder uchiha), the emotional impact it had on readers and the political/philosophical debate it generated among them (so realistic that it remains an almost unsolvable debate)...that without any doubt it is The Best. A twist that is not only surprising, but with exceptional depth (the only other one that comes to my mind is the Lelouch twist...but its anime).

@ M3J and naruto-niikun: Thank you so very much for your amazing help in getting all the links of the manga series the nominees of the awards come from!! I really appreciate your help.

As naruto-niikun suggested it (which btw was an awesome suggestion ), I’ve posted your lists of links in the opening post of this thread.

@Des-chan you forgot to change my votes, please change them the next time

I did change your votes, naruto-niikun. I removed your previous nominations and replaced them with your new ones. So I’m a bit confused and worried because I don’t know what happened. Could you please check the new list of nominees and let me know what specific changes I need to make? I apologize for the inconvenience, and thanks in advance for your help. I appreciate it very, very much.

---

And @destiny4ever. Removing the nominees from the first page is actual a good idea but you may should leave the award categories or else someone new might not know in which category to vote for and make up new categories.

Thank you for that great suggestion, Josl! The awards categories have returned to the opening post.

---

Best new series
shingeki no kyojin
Not sure if this series has seen much attention in other countries, but in Japan it's quite popular. The art is bleh at best, but the story is pretty fresh and fun. If you haven't, check it out, it's about giants that eat small people .

Thank you for participation in this project, njt! Shingeki no kyojin sounds like a really cool series , unfortunately only manga series which start date is 2010 can be nominated for the best new series category. But you can nominate another series for that award category.

---

Nominations end on December 30th, 2010 so hurry and get your nominations in! You may also change your nominations and votes until then!

As Salad has correctly mentioned it, the nomination process will end tomorrow, December 30th, 2010, at 8:37 PM. So you can still nominate and/or change your nominations until that date. No more nominations or changes will be accepted after 8:37 PM tomorrow.

---

I will be absent starting today, so have fun with the Awards! May the best of the best win!
And Happy New Year to everybody!

Thank you so very much for all the hard work and dedication you have given to this project, bene!! And Happy New Year to you too!!

Re: The MangaHelpers Manga Awards

I get the feeling we should stop the nomination for Naruto 503 for the best color page as that's constantly nominated. <_<

Anyway, for those of you that know not of EST, it's 1:47AM currently.

This means you have, rounded, 19 hours to nominate before it's over. It's less than nineteen hours, but I don't care about precision. Eighteen hours and fifty minutes off the top of my head though.

I think in GMT time it's 6:48AM as of now? Oh, and 8:37 means 2037 for some of you that have different way of telling time.

Also, a bad choice to have come in this thread too early. Gotta find back where I left off and then do the count thingie now. T_T

Re: The MangaHelpers Manga Awards

I am not really satisfied with the couple of nominations i am gonna make, cause i won't honestly call them best, but they sure deserve to be mentioned at least. BEST MALE LEAD: Himura Kenshin from Rurouni Kenshin. BEST SHOUNEN: Rurouni Kenshin.

Re: The MangaHelpers Manga Awards

I find it very wise that you have changed it that way. Can you consider someone in Vinland Saga as a villain? At this moment, I can't. When reading all 8 volumes, I have liked Vinland Saga a lot because it wasn't focusing on a true villain. Okay, Askeladd was Thorfinn's nemesis BUT being a nemesis is imo not sufficient enough to stigmatize someone as a villain. Sweyn and his folks were Akeladd's nemesis. Historically, having your nemesis (your revanche) was very regular in those periods. Vinland Saga is all about Thorfinn's history...

Spoiler: looked up for wiki. Don't spoil yourself too much

Thorfinn Karslfeni, the Icelandic explorer who settled a colony in Vinland and who gave birth to a first child of European descent born in the new world

Well you do are right, Askeladd is not a true villain but at least the villain of the main protagonist, that's why some people may see him as one. Nevertheless I really liked his character and I hope that he will be in one of the final rounds!
Very interesting Spoiler I didn't know that Thorfinn's name is based on a true, popular Icelander

@ M3J and naruto-niikun: Thank you so very much for your amazing help in getting all the links of the manga series the nominees of the awards come from!! I really appreciate your help.

As naruto-niikun suggested it (which btw was an awesome suggestion ), I’ve posted your lists of links in the opening post of this thread.

thanks des-chan! you and the other mods are doing a great job here!
now as I think most of the nomination-time is over, here are the last nominated mangas, which weren't mentioned so far:

Spoiler

Mukashi no Hanashi

The Music of Marie

House of Five Leaves

Pika Ichi

Rainbow: Nisha Rokubou no Shichinin

The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya

D.N. Angel

Team Medical Dragon

Hana yori Dango

Koroshiya Ichi

Fate/Stay Night

I did change your votes, naruto-niikun. I removed your previous nominations and replaced them with your new ones. So I’m a bit confused and worried because I don’t know what happened. Could you please check the new list of nominees and let me know what specific changes I need to make? I apologize for the inconvenience, and thanks in advance for your help. Yes I do see them now. Maybe it was my mistake, I'm very sorry Nothing to be worried about, but thanks for your kind words

So the final rounds will start in a few days days now?

Re: The MangaHelpers Manga Awards

Best Male Lead: Yoshina Ageha from Psyren
Best Male Supporting Character: Colonel Roy Mustang from FMA
Best Female Lead: I nominate Takamachi Nanoha from Mahou Senki Lyrical Nanoha Force (The Nanoha series). Known as the White Devil amongst fans, she is easily one of the most powerful and upbeat female leads I have seen. She blasts straight through multiple walls to get to somebody, knocks her unconscious and still not at full power. How is that not awesome?
Best Female Supporting: Erza Scarlet from Fairy Tail
Best Shounen Manga: Full Metal Alchemist
Best Fight: I nominate Negi vs Rakan from Mahou Sensei Negima. At this point in the manga the reader can easily see Negi's exponential growth. With multiple reversals, and adrenaline pumping action, this fight keeps the reader on the edge of his seat. It is enough of a fight to take up most of Volume 27.
Best Villain: Father from FMA
Best Costume Design: FMA
Best Color Page: Bleach Ch. 416 Deicide 18 (THE END)
Best Double Page Spread:Zatch Bell Ch. 319: http://www.mangareader.net/266-35597...apter-319.html
Best Chapter: FMA Ch. 107
Best Couple: Yoshina Ageha and Sakurako Amamiya from Psyren
Best Full Cast: Full Metal Alchemist
Best Artwork: Mahou Sensei Negima! Hands down.
Best Plot-Twist:

Spoiler

Zeref's appearance on Tenrou Island in Fairy Tail.

Best Manga Overall: Full Metal Alchemist

Did you change your nomination to that or are those categories the first time you're nominating?

And please keep nominating mangas you think deserve to be nominated! The more manga that gets mentioned, the better it is!

Oh, guys, six hours and fifteen minutes before the nomination is over, if my math doesn't fail me. GET MORE TO PARTICIPATE! And thanks to those that have!
