Re: Weekly Oricon Comic Rankings

I think that sales have gone down this week probably because of damage caused by the tsunami because sales of bakuman and many other books have lowered

for example : Bakuman, in its first two weeks the last time, has sold over 400000 copies, and same for nura & toriko and many other manga

I hope that sales will resume usual their pace very quickly

I'm afraid sales will be low for quite some time. :( They're running out of necessities such as food so they probably won't be able to afford leisure goods.

Re: Weekly Oricon Comic Rankings

Not only that, I can't imagine how many stores have their stock damaged either by the floodwaters or idk, getting squashed/crumpled in the earthquake.

Also, I think since the Oricon rankings work on a computer-based system to collect sales #s from the shops all over Japan, some of these numbers might be a bit off because of the power shortages and all that?

Either way, hurrah for KimiTodo :zomg

That could be true. Oricon may have experienced a power shortage prior to the time they usually release the sale numbers: a total amount sold in one hour is different from the next.

It may take a while for things to stabilize considering sales since a portion of the buyers reside in the Touhoku region.

Re: Weekly Oricon Comic Rankings

Not to mention that Touhoku is huge and includes the capital Tokyo where presumably more people have the spending power to buy lots of manga, and otaku haven Akihabara...

Maybe the next One Piece volume will be unable to break its previous record as it has been doing with every new volume? It all depends on how long it takes for sales to stabilise again.

One correction: Tokyo is in the Kantou region. ;) But yes, there's still a significant portion who contribute to the sales.

Maybe the next One Piece volume will be unable to break its previous record as it has been doing with every new volume? It all depends on how long it takes for sales to stabilise again.
I liken ONE PIECE's Volume 61 to Michael Jackson's Thriller; they're both the biggest selling product of all time in their respective fields. Since OP set a bar so high (even for itself) it might take awhile to break its own record. :p

Re: Weekly Oricon Comic Rankings

Yeah, I realized that after I posted :sweat Japanese geography is obviously not my strong suit :p iirc, Touhoku is one of the bigger regions of Japan, though smaller than like, Hokkaido and Chuubu?

Haha, but this is kinda a sad way to lose your record-breaking streak, isn't it...? I mean, it wouldn't have been caused by a fall in OP's popularity, but because of the earthquake. Though I do also think that eventually OP will hit a peak it cannot break past. After all, there are only so many people in Japan :eyeroll

Re: Weekly Oricon Comic Rankings

Wow, that's a lot for Shingeki no Kyojin. The previous volumes all have sold around 500-600k, so I guess this time they're expecting something in the 800k range for vol4? They should print more of vols 1~3 as well, seeing how when vol 3 went on sale the first 2 volumes got huge boosts.

It's always better to have a sufficient first print, as oppose to having a small one and then scramble to make it up.

*Glares at ToLoveRu Darkness Vol. 1*
The figure could've been higher for the tank and databook if Shueisha was willing to do a bigger initial printing... Instead, Amazon.co.jp couldn't even fulfill its pre-orders = ="

Re: Weekly Oricon Comic Rankings

do you think that sales will take long time to return to its normal pace as before the earthquake ? I think it will take many years (approximately 3 years) :/

Re: Weekly Oricon Comic Rankings

@Finestela: That's definitely true, but sometimes you just can't gauge how well something is going to sell, especially with just its first volume. I'm guessing that's what happened with To-Love-Ru Darkness ^^

@Tarouch: Honestly, it all depends on how soon the nuclear emergency... Well, goes away (for lack of a better word) :s And after that, how fast Japan can rebuild herself.

But the problem is that it's not really its first volume. It's a rebooted series, sure, but not really a brand new series. Yet, they actually shrunk the first print number relative to the WSJ days even though they know it's going to sell MORE. I mean, jeez, if they don't want to look at PoT or DGM as examples (both of which sold with more intensity right after going to SQ than its previous volumes), at least look at the SQ reader feedback. There's a reason why SQ 2010-11 and SQ 2010-12 sold out as fast as they did (less than one week after its publication, and they're out at Amazon, permanently).

I was forced to cancel my order on Amazon (and buy it from BK1) because I couldn't get my copy even though I've pre-ordered about 2 weeks before its release.

Ho ho ho, my "sweet" Sekai-ichi Hatsukoi. The anime really pumped your sales.
It's the yaoi world showing its claws slowly.

Re: Weekly Oricon Comic Rankings

From ANN:
The 60th volume of Eiichiro Oda's One Piece pirate manga became the first book to sell over 3 million copies since Oricon began posting its sales ranking charts in April of 2008. It sold 16,000 copies during the March 28-April 3 week for a new overall total of 3,011,000 copies. Volume 61 also sold 26,051 copies during that same week for a new total of 2,996,545 copies, so it is poised to become the second book to sell 3 million copies.

Last November, volume 60 became the first book to sell over two million copies in its first week of sales in Oricon's ranking history. Volume 61 sold over two million copies in just three days in February. The same volume already holds a record for having 3.8 million copies published in its first print run. The series overall now has more than 200 million copies in print.

Oda launched the manga in Shueisha's Weekly Shonen Jump magazine in 1997, and Viz Media will publish the 57th volume in North America in June.
Awesome stuff, well done One Piece! :yay Not that it's any surprise, but still, a feat nonetheless.

I'm pretty sure that the volume 61 of "One Piece " will exceed 3 million copies sold before the end of this week and will do better than the previous volume
