Re: Shingeki no Kyojin by ISAYAMA Hajime

Yes, which is what I did, and was ignored in favor of something frankly stupid like "fighting style"

Why would it be an unamed new recruit from the scouting legion

The new recruits are taking part in the current expedition

I was merely saying that it could be a new recruit just entering the scouting legion, there was no basis. I'm considering all the possibilities here. Yes, Armin's roundabout words about Eren suggest its someone they know or a person with knowledge that Eren is Armin's best friend, but it could be a stranger from trainee camp that observed them.

Annie could just as easily have felt guilty for going to the safe military police, while her friends went to the scouting legion towards their deathbeds. She would have survivor's guilt (look it up if you don't know what it is).

Who knows, she might have a different role than being that female titan that someone of you people are guessing is. Or she could be an influential policewoman that rallies support for Eren in the kingdom or she could give information about the royalty to Eren and co. when they get back.

My point is that your prediction or everyone else's (including mine) could all be wrong. So you shouldn't disregard other people's predictions/guesses so easily.

But she killed unnamed scouting legion members who attacked her despite their pleas, yet she let Armin Jean and Reiner go even after they attacked her

How do you explain this difference?
I clearly did not say your predictions were wrong, I was just looking at this mystery through all the possible perspectives, no matter how unlikely they are. Although I can think of a few possible reasons why she spared the trio (Armin, Ryner, Jean).

1. She knew them, so she spared their lives.
2. She didn't care about them at all, since she already figured out Eren's location and didn't want to waste any more time on fodder humans. Her objective wasn't to annihilate everyone, but rather to get to Eren.
3. She only kills those that attack her, but spared the trio since they stopped attacking her. It might be something reactionary like with some animals, if you attack the animal first, then the animal will attack you back.
4. It was just a whim of hers.

Who cares

Why are you focusing on stupid stuff like fighting style and hair color and completely disregarding my points about the female titan's behavior and the way she reacted to Armin and his roundabout words about Eren
Stuff like fighting style and hair color are small details. When I first saw the eccentric titan with black hair in chapter 8 (didn't know it was Eren then), I thought his eye's and hair resembled Eren's a bit and the fighting stye showed it could have been human. Plus, the fighting style resembled Eren's like when he took down Jean in a brawl during trainee camp.

Back then, many of us thought Eren died when he was swallowed up by a Titan, but he was actually the eccentric titan in the end. Small details like those help when predicting.

P.S. Why does your post seem so disrespectful? "Do not condemn the judgment of another because it differs from your own. You may both be wrong."

P.S.S. On Kaiten's sigy isn't that a picture of a female titan? That brown haired one?

Re: Shingeki no Kyojin by ISAYAMA Hajime

I'm with Anacharsis and Aldrich on this one. Either the female titan is Annie or else Isayama Hajime wants us to think this way (for the sake of an upcoming plot twist). The most obvious hint (among others that Aldrich came with) is the difference in traitement between the two members of the scouting legion and armin's group whose lives seem to have been spared.

Aldrich said:
it seems the female titan knows Armin's name, and when Armin started shouting at her that she killed Eren to distract her, he actually didn't name Eren directly, he used roundabout ways like "my best friend" or the words Jean used many times to describe Eren ("that idiot who's eager to die") which I doubt is something someone who doesn't know the trainees personally would have paid attention to
Why do you say she knows Armin's name ? Is it because of the first bubble on page 04 chapter 24 ? The one shouting armin's name seems to be Ryner rather than the female titan (trying to wake him up). Armin reacted to the expression paited on the titan's face (a humain expression), not to someone calling his name.

Please remember to be respectful. It is perfectly fine to disagree, but please judge the argument not the person. Predictions are mostly speculation, it is very likely time will prove us all wrong. Thanks!

It is possible that the female titan is a new character, a villain who has taken the same serum as Eren. It is very likely there is an organization or group of people who created the Titans, Eren's father being one of them. Remember: as of right now there are no named villains. The titans are comparable to a natural disaster, unrelenting and destructive but faceless, emotionless. The female titan will probably be the first villain with a name and a personality. It does not need to be someone important we have already met. This arc is still a dramatic way to introduce a new characters.

It did not seem like Armin's group was spared. When he was alone and the female titan saw that he was not Eren and was not going to fight back, she spared him. When they attacked, she clearly was intent on killing them. Ryner himself was nearly killed, he had to slice her fingers off to escape her grasp. Armin was badly injured in the end.

Why do you say she knows Armin's name ? Is it because of the first bubble on page 04 chapter 24 ? The one shouting armin's name seems to be Ryner rather than the female titan (trying to wake him up). It is possible the female titan spoke to Armin when she peaked under his hood, but she did not call his name at the end of the fight with Jean and Ryner. I believe you are right, that it was Ryner who called his name, as in: Armin! Armin Can You Hear Me?!

Exactly

Also speaking on a narrative sense, Annie is the only member of the trainee squad that seems to be the odd (wo)man out

She's the only one who didn't enlist in the scouting legion among Eren's age group, hints were given about her backstory, she's had a couple of suspicious scenes as I already mentioned (I forgot to talk about that scene after the blockading of the hole where she apologizes to her fallen comrades, or the way she looked guilt ridden and regretful after Armin told her she was a kind person)

Given how the story is obviously going to focus on the scouting legion from now on, I fail to see the point of her character if she simply stayed a member of the military police
I don't really see any evidence that she is the female titan. It does not seem likely she could have passed through Wall Rose after the narrow gate was opened for the massed Scouting Legion while the Defensive Legion looks on, then move far enough ahead of the entire Scouting Legion that she could summon more titans, double back, and attack the Scouting Legion heading back in the general direction of the gate.

Also, the Scouting Legion did not set out immediately after the recruiting drive. There was even enough time for class room instruction for the new recruits. In that amount of time Annie was likely sent to the inner districts with the other police. If I had to guess, her role will be to show what is going on behind the front lines, the politics of the inner city and those who control the human world.

Re: Shingeki no Kyojin by ISAYAMA Hajime

The female titan we saw seem to be in control. The way she defended her nape, how she attacked, and especially how she did not kill Armin suggests she knew what she was doing. I believe she is someone who has trained her titan powers reasonably well. We saw when Eren transformed first time and even after that. He had no self-control and he was wild, quite unlike the female titan.

Now the question is, if it is Annie or someone from inside the walls, how could she transformed, gain self-control and nobody knew it? Whoever she is, she must have spent time outside the walls. Could the appearance of female humanoid titan be linked with Eren's father?

Re: Shingeki no Kyojin by ISAYAMA Hajime

Yeah, whoever this female titan is, she has had a lot of time to gain control of her powers. Eren lost all self awareness when he first transformed, even though he was not attacking his friends he was not in control and needed to piece his memories back together when he turned back. He obviously had no control when he attacked Mikasa, until Armin calmed him down he was in the process of fading from reality. Whoever this woman is , whether she came from outside the walls or within, she has had the time to train herself.

I am sure she is connected to Eren's father in someway. The question is whether she came from outside the walls in the first place. There are certainly more mysteries than answers at this point. We don't even know where Eren's father is, he could be hiding somewhere within the walls. He could be on the run somewhere outside. We don't even know if the world really is controlled by titans. I suppose there must be more people like our unidentified woman, capable of turning into a titan while still remaining rational. And there must be more people like Eren's father, who know what the titans are and have access to the serum administered to Eren.

Re: Shingeki no Kyojin by ISAYAMA Hajime

What I really want to know at this point is how she figured where to find Eren. She didn't hear Armin speculating about Eren's possible location, did she. Yet she went straight to where he was, but not from the start. At first I thought Eren could be emitting some waves or smell or something even in his human form that's drastically different from normal people's. But then again, in that case she would've gone straight to him from the beginning, without detouring through the right flank. That is, she didn't know his location at first, but figured it somehow during the skirmish with the trio. And I think, for that she had to be aquainted very intimately with that special formation Irvin invented... she came to the conclusion about the safest place through the deduction process, similar to Armin's, based on full knowledge of details about the formation...

Clearly there is a mole and the commander is currently trying to weed that one out, and so spreading misinformation as we saw was an effective way of minimizing threat to Eren as well as potentially narrowing down said mole. Remember the commander was suspicious after the death of the test subjects, and even Armin had already deduced as well what the commanders real motives were regarding this sortie out in the open (its more than just a test run but to find out if there is indeed a spy among them). The plan has worked in confirming this now they just need to survive~

Re: Shingeki no Kyojin by ISAYAMA Hajime

There has to be some connection between whomever killed the two titans and the female titan. Other than guessing they are part of the scouting legion, I can't really make much of a guess. If there is a connection between people within the wall and without I am curious how information is moved. The city seems to be so well sealed and it does not appear that anyone leaves Wall Rose on a regular basis.

A member of the army who can change into titan form can easily convey informations be it inside or outside human territory : inside, by using 3D maneuver to climb the walls. Outside, by turning into a titan to avoid being attacked.
Besides, there may be some unknown underground ways to reach the outside world.

Good point there. So the female titan aimed for the right flank because someone told her (or she herself read it) that Eren was to be stationed somewhere on the right flank. Then why did she change direction by the end of chapter 23 ? Did she get new informations on Eren's position or what ?

Either she was smart enough to figure it out as Armin did, well at least she definitely learned first hand that the information she was given is wrong from her initial assault so maybe her assault on Armin was her second one already so that she'd end up figuring things out. Or she had received certain sets of information to regarding his whereabouts. I'm leaning more towards the first one.

Glad to see a new fan! If you're looking for chapters 11-13 that is (most of) volume 3. Should be able to download the batch either from the Manga Editors website, mangaunderground, or mangatraders.

Can we be sure she knew where to attack? Maybe the attack against the right flank was exploratory, or to force the a full change of direction. Commander Irvin seems intent on driving her towards the forest, she may have intended to force them in a certain direction rather than attempting to go straight for her target. She probably received intel that Eren would be with the scouting company but she may not have been told exactly where in the formation he was.

There are definitely underground tunnels leading to the outside. Wherever Eren's father went, I bet he used them to get there. I am not sure about 3D maneuvers though. The wall seems to be sealed pretty tight, unauthorized 3D maneuvers might be a bit to conspicuous.

Re: Shingeki no Kyojin by ISAYAMA Hajime

People in 2ch speculating that Ryner is suspicious as he know Armyn prediction about Eren's whereabouts from Armin, and the female giant first appeared in the direction where Ryner told the whereabout of Eren. And when Ryner captured by the female giant, he unnaturally near female giant's ear before escaped and then the female giant go to the direction of Eren speculated by Armin.
I don't believe it, though. And his impression about "the goddess" Crysta also make me fell less suspicious about him.
And now, the formation where Eren is is entering the wood, while other formation go outward of the wood, and the female giant already entering the wood, so I wonder if Eren will become a giant to go against the female giant, or Levi and his gang will be enough to fight against her?
Also, I wonder. People already talking about the last chapters without using spoiler tag, is it already translated or no need to use spoiler tag anymore for chapters already out even if it still raw?

Its completely scanlated now Sama-dear (totally calling you this now)~. So yes we can now discuss it without spoiler tags since we're all on the same chapter now, it was scanlated quite recently by TDX.

Re: Shingeki no Kyojin by ISAYAMA Hajime

24 hour rule is still in effect (spoiler tags for 24 hours after new release) but chapter 24 has been in English for half a week now.

I'm not sure I suspect any connection between Ryner and the female titan. Killing the two captured titans is a different story, I'm not sure I suspect Ryner but I would not be surprised if it were one of the trainees. As far as connections to the female titan, or an informant, I am more inclined to suspect an established member of the Scouting Legion. The trainees are all on their first sortie, and likely first time outside of Wall Rose since the Colossal Titan broke Wall Maria. But the veteran members have all been outside of the walls on sorties before, they have all had a chance to come into contact with enemies.

I wonder if Commander Irvin and Corporal Levi are interested in testing Eren's titan powers out. Maybe they knew the female Titan was lurking in the area and went out to challenge her.

Re: Shingeki no Kyojin by ISAYAMA Hajime

Oh, so the Edited Manga have followed the raw now.
From Betsu Maga last month, we know now that the distance between Wall Maria and Rose is 100 km, Wall Rose and Shina is 140 km and the radius of Wall Shina from the center is 270 km, with area of each of the land between wall and center part around 450000-500000 km2.
So, I wonder, how much distance Eren and the Scouting Legion need to go through from east (was it? or west) of Wall Rose to the south part of Wall Maria? I guess it's around 1/4 of the circumference of Wall Maria, but it should be less as they go from Wall Rose.
Although the strategy of evading giants may add the distance they take.

Re: Shingeki no Kyojin by ISAYAMA Hajime

Chapter 24 was included in the final batch release. Starting with 25 will be getting one chapter a month :D

From what it seems, reaching Eren's old house is not the aim of this sortie. It seems to me there will be some sort of change in strategy when they do undertake the full sortie, unless part of the plan behind this sortie is to take out Titan "leadership". It seems to me that by avoiding Titans during the full assault the troops will be in more serious danger than a head on assault. There seem to be Titans wherever they go and the possibility exists of more "intelligent" Titans guiding them, even if they defeat this woman.

Well, from when Elvin gave his speech and reveal about Eren's basement to everyone, with Armin's suspicion, we know that there will be something wrong in this time sortie. But in the end they have to go to Eren's house so I think there's nothing wrong to know how long they need to take to reach it.
Also, they will pass south east part of Maria and Ryner and Bertolt hometown should be around there, with Ryner wants to go back to his hometown, I wonder if there will be story there (and his last moment probably).

Looks like there will be novelization of Shingeki no Kyojin, subtitle is "Before the fall". Author is Suzukaze Ryou and illustration by Thores Shibamoto..
