Bleach is an interesting case. A few months ago people were shouting "cancellation!" or saying that it'd be moving to SQ. I read a lot of comments about Kubo not being good anymore and (more imprtantly) something about the Shinigami not being able to get it back to top anymore.

Well... 2nd place, at least 3rd if OP had been there (and now I know this isn't even Rukia chapter). Next week will probably be similar.

The thing is, many people thought tis was a restart of the series when it wasn't. It's a transition arc. There are a hundred plot threads still open, remember.

What do you guys think about Kurogane? I found it pretty bland.

Kurogane is sort of interesting, but with Kuroko getting an anime and solidifying itself as THE Jump sports series at the moment, I'd say Kurogane doesn't have a prayer. I won't be upset if it survives or anything, but I'd certainly rather see it go before Enigma, St&rs or Magico.

I don't get why st&rs get so much love in this thread. So far its nothing more then a generic shonen in an astronaut disguise. Generic plot, generic characters, generic art, almost no humor. It's execution is so bland. No surprise it ranked dead last two times in a row.

Only thing going for it is supposedly its originality. But really? What's so original about it? Astronauts theme? All it takes to be labeled as original is an astronauts theme? So if we replace astronauts with.. Say.. Ninjapirates.. We leave everything as it is, but instead of astronauts preparing a travel to mars, we have ninjapirates and an island far away. Same plot, same execution, exact same story, but its ninjapirates going to far-far-away-island. Would you still like it? Would you still think its original?

If i start a manga about dishwashers. Would you label it as "orginal" by default? Would you love it just because you never seen a generic shounen disguised with dishwashers theme before?

it is unoriginel... you've get the main heroe with mysterious super powers and his 2 best friends, the msart guy and the pretty girl fighting against same years with typical characterization. the guy being bullied, the antagonist with seems superior and so on.

Only the theme is something different, but that doesn't make it a good story.

did kubo ever said that he want to write a perfect plot? if so he failed, but otherwise he does great. he wrote a top tier manga, got excellence art and style and only need to show some characters to rock the top.

Whether he said so or not is irrelevant. The problem here is that people can use this against Bleach whenever the conversation does come up. Bleach's plot isn't doing it any favors. Anyway, it's common to try to boost up ranks by introducing popular characters, that's what fanservice is for right?

BLEACH is an interesting case indeed, history has shown us that continuing a manga which main thread has been solved isn't that good of an idea, even in cases where the main story hasn't resolved but the most important characters aren't there (I.e. they die) tend to be less popular or simply die a slow death.

What we have seen is that BLEACH voters just plain-love fan-service, sure the plot-twist of
Ginjo being a bad guy
got BLEACH a better rank. But what really got BLEACH back in its normal Top3 position was
Rukia returning, and who knows what rank will BLEACH get next week with the return of all those fan-favorite characters.

I.e. Hokuto No Ken, a manga which had a reboot too, and by the way reboot IMO is a manga that could have perfectly ended in x part with all plot (or almost all) plot threads resolved, unlike say Naruto-Naruto Shippuden (I know it doesn't exist in the manga, but for the sake of easy-explaining) which had lots of plot still untouched.

It was practically Top 5 always in its first year, then always Top 3, you can see that beginning from its 3rd or so year it rank was stable but declined slowly, sure it didn't drop like BLEACH but it ranked (I.e. in 1986 it had 6 4th ranks, 1987 29 4th ranks or worse and in 1988 out of 35 issues 28 were in the mid ranks).
Now for those that haven't read/watched Hokuto No Ken, from its 3rd year the manga had a reboot, I won't enter in detail but it had one, the manga could have end at volume 16, chapter 135 or so.

Another example from the mid 80s, my beloved Saint Seiya it had various reebots..... Well, you could say they aren't reboots because it was obvious after Poseidon they had to battle Hades and then Zeus.. Ok scratch that.
Anyway Hades arc wasn't that well received, it got lower ranks, the anime wasn't running back when Hades began and that probably hurt its ranks, but when Kurumada really, really, realllllly put the nail in Saint Seiya's coffin was when
He killed the Gold Saints in the Lament Wall
the rankings really fall from there on.. That means you don't kill fan-favorites in JUMP!! NEVER!! Imagine if Kubo would have killed say Rukia or even worse Hitsugaya!!

Other recent example is Death Note, while I don't have the ranks at the moment I recall the general fan-reaction when
U know who dies and part 2 begins, if you haven't read DN I just saved u from a big spoiler LOL
the fan-base was pissed and I RECALL the ranks for the manga did fall a little bit, and well, the story just wasn't that good from then on, even in the anime adaptation it shows, the part 2 just got like.. 10 episodes?

Now, there is a manga which had various reboots and did quite nicely, you don't need to be a genius to guess which manga was.. Dragon Ball.
The episodic nature of each saga of Dragon Ball.. What I mean by episodic is that they really don't interconnect much (Although they do) makes the manga very, very rebootable, heck.. Even now with the manga finished and Goku being
The most powerful being in the universe, also I don't want any Mystic Gohan vs Goku debate pls
IF Toriyama wanted he could continue.. Imagine, like a new arc where a survivor Tsufuruyin which wants to destroy Saiyans with technology. Or something like that..

Dragon Ball could do that because:
1.- The Dragon Balls could revive the characters, thus fan-favorite characters could (and did) return at points of the manga.
2.- Toriyama changed the rules whenever he felt like it (Remember how Dragon Balls couldn't revive people twice?? Oh well Not Namekian Dragon Balls! Or how about Majin Buu arc where everybody went to Kaiohsama's temple.. With a ship..)

thanks for ruining for me! JK JK

I get what you're saying, the reason why i feel bleach wasn't so well received this past arc was just cause of lazy writing. The reasoning behind Ginjo and Tsukishima whole motivation is just so shaky, and
recreating ichigo's friend's memories and not him, why? why not change his memory to avoid a future conflict?
that was my biggest plot whole in this arc.

i guess people are right, this is just a throw away arc to transition into a new villain(hopefully not as big of a anti-climactic one as Aizen) for Oda so he can show off everyone's new hairstyle and abilities.

As far as St&RS and Mirror is concerned, i kinda figured one if not both would flop. Mainly st&rs just for the simple fact that it's so out of the norm for jump it would need to grab a whole new fanbase that probably wasn't there to begin with. Mirror is kinda like the sports manga in jump, you kinda need a battle, a sports, a romcom etc to have a good magazine otherwise if you had nothing but battles it would be extremely bland. Maybe if there was another one of the same genre as Mirror it may not of done this well but as of right now it's looking good.

I'm just glad it isn't like ichigo 100%, omg just thinking about that manga gets me so angry, 19 volumes of what? an unlikeable protagonist with bland, unmemorable traits and no qualities i could see a plausible reason for 5 girls fighting for him, why? sorry lol i just really hate that series

If I'm not mistaken, Naruto got number 1 for that chapter where Nagato and Itachi fought (a pretty anticlimatic battle). That is NOT fanservice.

Bleach would probably have gotten third had OP been there. But if what you're saying is true, Rukia's chapter should skyrocket Bleach's ranking.
Didn't mention Naruto being fanservice or not.

Not sure how much Bleach can expect to "skyrocket" exactly. Being #3 is pretty much what Bleach could expect prior to the Fullbring Arc, with some rare exceptional chapters bumping down Naruto, OP or both. Bleach can possibly get #2 or even #1 next week and the week after, but I wouldn't be disappointed with #3. No matter what I expect all of 459-466 to get "high" rankings.

Naruto is doing well at the moment. But I think that even after the shinigamii appearance, BLEACH didn't recover as much as they hoped. The fights look very easy and all those troubles they had in the previous chapters look worthless now... OP absence would really help BLEACH look good.
I would say Bleach recovered remarkably well. Being #2 this week even before the shinigami appear (likely #3 if OP was present) is pretty much as good as Bleach can hope to get. I doubt the rank will drop much in the upcoming chapters, especially not in the next two rankings. OP's absence didn't really help Bleach either, as beating all other series in Jump this week besides OP and Naruto would have been remarkable anyway taking Bleach's recent bad run. I doubt Naruto or OP being absent in the near future will help Bleach either, they are usually both in the top 2, so as long as Bleach beats all the other series besides those two, it should get the thumbs up.

How's Bleach being 2nd a cause of discomfort? It's a pretty good manga.
I know, it seems like we had a minor misunderstanding. I thought you weren't very pleased with Bleach's great rank, hence the comment about comfort.

I don't even care about Naruto, Bleach or One Piece's rankings. It's not like they are going to get cancelled and it's not like I enjoy them less if they are ranked low or more if they are ranked high.

I agree. To be honest I pretty much stop caring about the rankings of any series once it gets an anime adaption. By that point it has it;s place in the magazine, and most likely isn't going anywhere.

Most of my attention for the ToC is on the newer series, specfically Enigma at this point.

I totally agree Divinenega, once a manga gets an anime it automatically gets those magical 26 weeks with no fear of cancellation, and most JUMP mangas get more than 26 episodes, although now they go into seasons like Bakuman season 1 & 2, Nurarihyon No Mago season 1 & 2.

That's why I don't read JUMP manga with no animation, because what I read and like tends to get cancelled.. KO Sen, Double Arts.. I miss u :*(

i can't really know why you think this is a plot hole...

he wanted to steal ichigo's powers so he had to give him a motive to train so he could awaken his sleeping powers.... the whole plan was made so that they can steal his powers so why would they recreate his memories ?!

Guys, let's keep the conversation civil -not that anything is wrong at the moment, just saying- and remember to keep the discussion about specific plot-points to a minimal. Thanks!

I love fan books, and Toriko's will be pretty interesting since it'll most likely give a description of each ingredient covered in the series so far.

Cool. Nice to finally get some data on Medaka's sales since JUMP never likes to mention them outside of Oricon rankings. I wonder how much the sales will go up with the anime though. I imagine a good chunk of the Nishio fanbase is reading it already, but it would be interesting to see a bit of a boost.

Yeah. Toriko doesn't have any special things next issue. They sometimes just stick something there on those preview pages to say "Also this manga is in it!". One Piece doesn't either.

You can see, there's a little box next to Nurarihyon saying "Center color to celebrate the popularity of the TV anime".

I just realized..... if this is gonna be a "Big 3" cover again, and Bleach isn't in there, and instead Toriko is in, that feels really cruel for Bleach as it just started picking up again.

I don't think it going to be a "Big 3" cover, I think Naruto going to get cover.
