I don't read sket dance, I only watch the anime but its really good and since you guys said it, I'm sure it deserves that place
Not really glad that reborn is up there again but I guess this might be the final arc of reborn!
Seems like engima is going to be over...and mago, please don't end up in the last place after engima.
Oh and I like that kurogane is up there, I hope it stays that way too.
Been a weird few days preventing me from commenting...but Sket getting first is a nice surprise. Been a while since a pure gag series has taken tops, so congrats to it. And...yeah, Enigma did make a year but it's pretty much dead now. Too bad, sort of discounting the entire '10 class with it going already.
@Reith: Pretty much every gag manga has at least had one 1st place on its run.
IIRC most mangas didn't take that long to take 1st place, in example Shimabukuro's (TORIKO mangaka) Leader Takeshi won a couple of first places on its first year IIRC...
Also I don't even have to check since I am pretty sure Gintama has gotten at least a 1st place too..
And there are 2 mangas whose anime adaptations had the most ratings on TV, Dokonjo Gaeru and Dr. Slump, its obvious both of these titles were pretty popular on their days and ranked very good on the TOCs managing to get lots of 1st places.
IIRC Kochikame had its fair share of 1st place too.
Sexy Commando and Jaguar didn't got 1st place for obvious reasons.
(BTW is there any site with TOCs from 2001-onwards since biwa doesn't have from 2001 onwards).
TL: DR no, Sket Dance is not the first gag manga and it definetly took long for it to get a first place in comparison to 90% of other gag mangas in JUMP, although to be fair the series of the past didn't had to compete with a Big 3 barrier and also in the past the manga that got the Cover not necessarily got the Color pages so that helped because CP normally would go to a popular title so the manga that would have been 1st place that week was CP likely, so the 2nd place would in turn be 1st place.
EDIT: But I am definetly happy about SD getting 1st place, diversity is always nice, hopefully BLEACH doesn't return to BIG 3, I hope BIG 3 becomes BIG 2 (ONE PIECE and NARUTO) and while BLEACH probably won't get ranked top 3 it won't be cancelled not as long as it anime keeps running.
IMO REBORN will likely end soon, no anime means no manga lol. And NARUTO seems like its gonna finish soon (As in 1-3 years soon) so that will provide more diversity to the TOC (No BIG3 anymore).
Of course this is all my wishful thinking.

Well, Toriko will take Naruto's place for sure, and as for the third place, who knows. Maybe Bleach gets back to its feet with the Royal Guards and all that.
What's sure is that many "big" series will be ending pretty soon. As in, Naruto, Bakuman (since its story can't stretch much more) and possibly Reborn.
I definetly see all NARUTO, Bakuman and REBORN! ending in a 1-3 year period. IIRC I also said Gintama was gonna end soon probably, the author has far surpassed the 30 volumes mark he said would do.. But that many mangas ending in so short of a time would be a big hit to the magazine..
But still its not like these mangas don't have replacements, if NARUTO ends TORIKO could become the next big thing (emphasis on could) as for Bakuman I don't know but Gintama already has a sort of Spiritual succesor in Sket DANCE.
I also think Hunter X Hunter is gonna end in this batch of chapters, and if not in this batch of chapters in the upcoming batch. I base this conclusion in the new anime, there wouldn't really be a point in making a new adaptation if the studio didn't knew the manga would end soon.. Kinda like FMA Brotherhood, the studio did the adaptation because Arakawa knew she was about to end it soon, you can see she had to put lots of more things quicker and in less pages though.
Way to go Sket Dance!! It's definitely the series that I'm enjoying the most at the moment! As for Bakuman, I know it's had a bit of a slump but it shouldn't rank that bad. That's just me though. It's also good to see Reborn! doing so good!

Except the new Hunter x Hunter anime is not a reboot in any sense of the word but simply an animating of the just recently finished Ant arc. I highly doubt Hunter x Hunter ends anytime soon. Definitely not within this batch of chapters (assuming it is a batch and not back for regular serialization).
Personally, I see Naruto, Bakuman, and Reborn potentially ending soon as a good thing. It will free up space for newer series to flourish. Maybe Jump won't have as many massive selling hits but I'd be cool with that. Of course, Bakuman could actually be stretched out for quite a long time. There are so many difficulties mangaka face the authors could explore even after they get an anime, so who knows. Only definite "gonna end soon" manga is Naruto.
As for that ToC thing, great seeing Sket Dance on top and consisting being in the top five, same with Toriko. New faces up there is refreshing. I hope Kurogane ranks decently well. It's a lot more entertaining than people have given it credit for. Sure it's nothing new but it's still a solid sports series so far. Plus I'd love to see how the kendo thing plays out over the course of the series. Shame about Enigma but the author kinda wrote herself into a corner with the story's premise. After the E-test, it didn't really have anywhere to go.
Even though I don't read Harisugawa, I'm still happy is doing well since it adds some diversity but I'd gladly sacrifice it to save Stars The latest chapter was quite interesting and maybe(?) could help it in the ranks but who knows. Hopefully at least it or Kurogane will survive but knowing my luck...
But it is a reanimation from the beginning of the series and not the Ant Arc, I doubt it will any time soon though. He can't just end it with Gon surviving his current situation.
Sket isn't really a gag manga, not like Jaguar or Inumaru. It is more slice of life/school life with a good sense of humor, rather than comedy. Humor is very important to the story but the focus is on the characters and their lives, rather than simple jokes. Despite being an assistant I would not even compare his style to Gintama. Sket Dance seems more influenced by Adachi, with a very similar pace, style, and attitude. Cross Game without the baseball would be a good comparison. I am also a member of the "need to catch up on Sket" club, it's been a while since I read.

IMO there are 2 types of endings, the ones where the plot is pretty much closed and the ones where certain plot elements aren't closed..
Examples of the first would be Yu-Gi-Oh!, Hoshin Engi, Rurouni Kenshin.. examples of the other are most sport manga (I have seen that most sport manga tend to end in a National Tournament arc of sorts and if they continue is in another magazine), Dragon Ball, Yu Yu Hakusho, Saint Seiya, Shaman King, Hikaru No GO.. Now for both SS and SK those titles were cancelled and SK had its true ending and SS is now being continued.. But YYH was left like that with tons of things unresolved..
I just hope Togashi doesn't pull another YYH, but I can definetly see him doing that.
What I mean is that there are certain mangas where you just don't see the ending coming and then.. it just comes.
If you have watched/read Dragon Ball imagine you were a reader in Japan, would you have guessed the manga was gonna end 2,3 weeks before that?? Or if you have read Slam DUNK, would you? Or have you read Hikaru No Go, if you have then we can be clear you couldn't have guessed the manga was gonna end like that..
HUNTER X HUNTER just feels like that sort of manga, after all the whole purpose of the series wasn't to be like for Gon to be the best Hunter ever but to find his father and it could be quite close to that, sure LOTS of things are left opened but, c'mon its Togashi we are talking about.
Right now the mystery of
Killua's family seems to be resolving, out of the top of my mind the other important plot lines are Kurapika vs the Spiders, Hisoka wanting to fight Kuroro, Gon meeting his father.. And well there is this thing that has been bugging me since it was mentioned, Melody (IIRC) mentioned Sonata of Darkness or something like that and since that chapter I have been dying for an arc involving the Sonata of Darkness.. I guess it won't happen LOL
BTW I HOPE I AM NOT RIGHT AS I LOVE HUNTER X HUNTER.
Yeah, it was kind of cancelled. Saint Seiya ended during the last battle becasue its ranking has decreased; therefore, Kurumada released its final chapter in V Jump and he extended chapter in final volume.
I think the ending pretty much answers itself..
The most foreshadowed of all battles (well apart from Zeus..) ending in a single chapter.. WTF?! And with THAT ending. (I don´want to spoil, we all know how Hades arc ended)
Yeah it was cancelled.
As Negative Syndicate wrote it was so cancelled Kurumada was pretty much obligated to move the ending to V-Jump, although to be fair it was V-Jump's first issue from what I have heard so you can say Saint Seiya was its first manga LOL.
don't know why all of you think naruto's ending isn't far away, but his goal is not to finish of madara (or who the ex-tobi guy is), nor to help sasuke. his only goal is to become hokage. after the great war he could do something like a time skip and naruto will be a leader like kakashi. not like i want that to happen, but dragonball was longer than he wanted, death note had the same fate and so on.
bakuman:
i don't think that it will go longer than 5 chapters after the anime aired. you can do more stuff like working with the anime corporation and other stuff, but that would only be the cause if there is a goal, something bigger and more important than marry his girlfriend.
hxh:
gon needs only to find his father, that could be the end. the spider group and his friends rotten family aren't really "plot holes". there isn't a need to show them again, also hisoka's fight. the symphony of darkness is a perfect example for that. it's foreshadowing to extent the content of the story. afterwards you can say "oh look, that was mentioned and look how important it was", but thats only true if it's shown. now it's just a detail of the world without relevance to the story, because the main characters goals are not effected by it.
reborn:
i read every chapter but somehow i forgot a lot of things that were foreshadowed. in my opinion should this be the last arc and let him be the mafia boss. is there anything after reborns transformation, that needs to be cleared of? the mangaka recycles now all of his ex-bosses for a grand ending. don't think the she could do a better ending with all parties involved than that.
