Since there is no Q&A thread I'll ask it here. Does anyone have a non-far-fetched explanation why there are only 661 hunters when we've seen many powerful non-Hunter nen users? If such weak people like Pokkle or Ponzu could become hunters why more powerful people aren't hunters? After all hunter license gives only advantages (and huge ones at that) and has no disadvantages (if someone doesn't like it he can sell it for an astronomical figure). I thought about it and the only thing I could think of was that some of the more powerful nen users weren't necessarily powerful without nen, like the ones that Gon and Killua fought in York Shin (and Killua could defeat these three easily even though he was a rookie in nen department compared to them). And since many of these users were specialized they could have troubles with some of the tests. Or they were too stupid to find the place where exam was. But these don't convince me and I'm not even sure if these three were that weak in the first place. Anyway, we've met many more powerful users like Gensuru and some others which we don't know were hunters or not so that might also explain it. And you could take into account that the time Gon, Killua, Kurapica and Leorio were taking their exam was special and averagely 2 people passed each year (just a guess, figure from a hat). But still, since hunters don't die easily the number of hunters should increase significantly over time. So I wonder, how long does this organization even exist and who started it? I wonder if there will be any answers for it.

If anyone has an idea feel free to share.

^Well, the advantages are there but that does not mean everyone has interest in being a hunter. It does not harm to have the license but if there a point in getting the license if you are not going to do a hunter's job nor use the benefits. If it doesn't make a difference to have it, why go through the trouble?

But it does make a difference since it's considered as priceless and gives access to resources otherwise unavailable. It gives money and power and access to an elite database. There are other advantages too, hence every year there are so many trying to get it.

I think it's not really necessary to some. And some just really need it for business, so it all depends. Like in the Zoldyck family alone- Illumi became a hunter for business, Killua became one because he just wanted to test himself (and didn't really know what he was in for), and the rest of the family despite being excellent nen users (what an understatement) don't really care. They have their own means to get money.

Some nen users like the Spiders don't feel its necessary. They have Shalnark to access stuff for them.

Plus, for an association like Hunters, I think there are certain requirements in your lifetime you have to comply to, like maybe a quota on jobs or services rendered annualy, and this just might be a bother to some nen users. Being a hunter is a profession, so naturally you have to work to earn your keep, is my theory. That is why even weak hunters exist.

I think it's not really necessary to some.

Not all men are willing to risk their lives (after all, would YOU have taken the exam if a monster like Hisoka takes it with you?) for something that will also make them the target of license card collectors. Hence nen training is mandatory to all who pass. But if you already know nen, and want the freedom of anonymity, why have yourself registered at an international list where everyone's moves are monitored?

Outside of Hisoka, Spiders, and the Z family I don't see too many powerful people that doesn't have a license. Some of the exam part requires some brains too. Someone like Ubogin could easily be disqualified halfway (Hisoka got disqualified before), and while it's anything goes in the exam, I'd assume if you're a convicted criminal (like Spiders) you probably don't want to make too big of a scene while near the Hunter's headquarters. While the Hunter's association isn't something that exists for pure good, they do seem to care about their reputation so if you got a license and then start commiting massive crimes, you might get unwarranted attention unless you're always a fugitive like Shalunark. I'm guessing in his case he either got the license before he joined Spiders, or he always kept a low profile so people don't know who he is when he took the test.

Note that an ordinary person that knows how to use aura still isn't going to be able to complete the exam which is roughly at the level of a superhuman being that doesn't know how to use aura. In GI we see there are a lot of people who are in the game but are extremely weak. Those guys are extremely unlikely to even have the stamina to finish the marathon leg of the exam let alone the harder parts. Neon has a pretty powerful ability even in the world of HXH, but there's no way she'd be able to finish the Hunter's exam at all.

Hisoka got disqualified because he killed an instructor. Even killua had an easy time becoming a hunter the second time (understatement of the year, he did not even have to try) and the ryodan were massively stronger than him at the time. IMO any ryodan member would have an extremely easy time becoming a hunter, even the non combat ones. Obviously it is not impossible for them to get disqualified however most scenarios under which such a thing would happen are extremely unlikely.

Hisoka got disqualified for attacking the instructor, not killing him. It almost happened again the second time he took the exam too.

The majority rules test can't be completed with only brute force. You at least have to not kill the other 4 guys you paired up with or you can't even get the 3 out of 5 wins.

The Spiders do not want to get near anything Hunter unless they had no choice- for the reason that they are black listed. -_- This was the main reason Kurapica wanted to become a hunter- to get access on information about them.

So naturally, any other criminal nen-user who wants to stay low on the radar prefers not to be anywhere near Hunters, let alone be in the dead center of the association which is the exam. There are high chances that they can encounter Black list hunters. Gourmet hunters might not care about them but others might.

It's up to you if you like or not your technique, we're just making comments about if it would work or not :P

And don't worry, if I get enough participants I'll make a thread to explain how this will go. Don't rush because you have time, I'm just testing if we can reach at least 25 candidates.

Yeah, that should definitely be the case. I think at least two people should be assigned to judge, and both of them should have to approve for an ability to be useable. Equally, there should also be rules governing how many different hatsu someone can have. Gon, for example, technically has three (Rock, Paper, Scissors), whilst Killua has one, but various different techniques derived from it (the palm shock, lightning bolt, Kanmaru etc.).

Actually...No. It's one special technique according and I'll see how many Hatsus involves in order to approve it. The more posts you have the more I'll allow. This is to encourage posting in MH, actually.

I was going through the chapter and I noticed this part and I can't believe it did not strike me before. The bet of the game was that komugi will call the king by his name without a suffix when he wins a game. Should we assume in the end mereum won a game against komugi?

LOL, that reminds me that I'm pushing my friends to play rpg irl with my friends about HxH xD
Anyway, I hope you get some answers but I actually doubt it will work out properly. I think most of users here wont spend much time into roleplaying due how HxH manga works (Hiatus and all) and they'll grow bored eventually and focused in other mangas and its activities.
