I think One Piece is the complete knowledge of the Void Century and ancient weapons. The final poneglyph and complete history is hidden at Raftel, who ever can sail the entire Grand Line and reach Raftel will be strong enough to challenge the World Government, and thus the Pirate King. I can not think of anything else that would so terrify the World Government that they would not only execute Roger but also extinguish his entire bloodline. That would also explain why Roger turned himself in. Rather than be captured with the secrets of a weapon he was to sick to wield, he turned himself in and kept history hidden until someone else could reach Raftel and find the One Piece.

I think that ONe Piece will be something leading the Straw Hats to some kind of final showdown. Up till now everything is leading towards a battle of justice against the marines. The revolutionary army is a party that didn't do a lot by now but I am sure that it will have a great influence and the marines will lose in the end because of their freaking way of calling their doing justice. So One Piece maybe something that uses the power of unleashed priacy (by Roger) in lead of the Straw Hats to free the world.

Just my thought because the positions are more or less switched in one piece. Marines are mainly bad and all good guys of the marines leave them or fight against their way of justice and the rising pirates except for blackbeard have a much better understanding of justice.

Well who knows. We'll see

I also think that reaching Raftel and becoming Pirate King will not be the end of the manga. The climactic arc will likely be a confrontation between the Pirate King, his allies and the World Government and her allies. Whatever the One Piece is it has a connection to the Void Century and will allow the Pirate King to fight on equal terms with the Government and Marine. Not necessarily a weapon, but possibly some knowledge that could turn the citizens against the government, or allow the Pirate King to understand some vulnerability.

I have a few theories about what one piece is:
Raftel is/was part of the ancient kingdom and is one piece.
It's nothing but the adventure that the pirates go through.
The true history.
Friendship. (just like in Mojacko, if anyone knows that)

I agree with both of you. I made a prediction here about One Piece being the very Ancient Kingdom itself. I don't think One Piece will be found in Raftel. I think Raftel simply holds the Rio Poneglyph which was said to contain the true historical text, including details of the Ancient Kingdom (One Piece) and possibly its real location. I believe the concept could be something like The Lost City of Atlantis, something that nobody knows exists and cannot be found through ordinary means. In any case, the manga constitutes themes much larger than a mere treasure hunt, so it's unlikely that it will end upon finding the 'treasure'. With the destruction of the Ancient Kingdom 800 years ago, the story essentially began with the world government and it will probably end with them.

Re: What is One Piece?!?!

I've always found the kanji for One Piece interesting. It's "ひとつなぎの大秘宝", Hitotsunagi no Daihihō. Daihihō simply means Great Hidden Treasure, but it's the Hitotsunagi that's interesting. I've been told by a Japanese person that it means, like, a ring, or a necklace, "hito" being "one" and "tsunagi" being "connection", so like, one connection. So maybe it's something that's supposed to connect all living things together or connect the history of the world together into an understandable circle. But since "hitotsunagi" is written in hiragana, "hito" could also mean "people", so it could also mean (in that wonderful way that Japanese can be so ambiguous) the Great Hidden Treasure that Connects People Together... kana?

I believe there was also an interview once done by Oda-sensei where he said one of his goals in making One Piece was to make a manga with the greatest ending ever, so I somehow doubt that One Piece is simply some trick by Roger or "friendship" or "adventure". But I don't remember where I read that so I'm sorry if that's not even true.

Personally, I believe One Piece is some piece of information or some tool. I've always thot it was way too convenient that there JUST happens to be the Calm Belt and the Grand Line and the Red Line, etc., just to make this long race to Raftel, so I'm wondering if maybe the World Government made the world this way to keep people away. Or when they destroyed whatever the lost country was, the world was turned into this shape, waiting for someone to reclaim One Piece and join the world back together into a whole ocean and planet. But if that's the case, I don't know why Roger didn't do it, but I still like the sound of it.
If what you said is true about "ひとつなぎの大秘宝", then that support my idea.
I have this idea for a long time. It is, One Piece is or refer to the long lost World History.
Cause the History is the thing that bond people together(in many way).
The history always wrote by the winner. Even in the real world, as you grow up,
you will find out that there are always a fake information or reason that add to make your side or your country look reasonable to do a terrible things. In One Piece case, it this world government. When they think they can control the whole world then one man appear.

When Roger set sail he didn't aim to be a Pirate King at all, he just want to change the world(one piece vol.61, page can't remember). Finally, Roger reached Raftle where the true History that must not be tell was hidden. The government felt fear of him, so they called him Pirate King to make people fear him, spot him. Whatever they did to Roger, it just calls a justice that should lay upon the criminal.

(This kind of concept just make me think about World War II. When the US bombed Japan with Nuclear)

The moment before Roger died is the moment that he reached his goal, to change the world, finally he turns the world up side down.

Also, I don't think the world government is a bad thing, there must be a reason behind their action. One piece always shows that nothing good or bad. Just live on, go on to the future you desire, and you have to be strong to survive and achieve it.

(PS. Sorry for my poor English)

Re: What is One Piece?!?!

The Ancient Kingdom was deposed by the ancestors of the Tenryuubito. They founded the World Government, the World Government exists to represent the will of the Tenryuubito. As a class apart they don't seem to have any interest in the dirty work of governing but the institutions are in place to protect their needs and world view above those of anyone else. While not every one involved in the institution is evil, the World Government as an institution is hopelessly corrupt and intolerant, reflecting the morals of the Tenryuubito. Those of high moral standards are likely marginalized, while men of questionable standing such as Spandam rise to positions of authority. If not evil, the institution of the World Government is an antagonist, probably the most important antagonist, in One Piece.

I have a few theories about what one piece is:
Raftel is/was part of the ancient kingdom and is one piece.
It's nothing but the adventure that the pirates go through.
The true history.
Friendship. (just like in Mojacko, if anyone knows that)
I agree, I think Raftel was a location of importance in the Ancient Kingdom. Being part of the Ancient Kingdom would not make Raftel unique: Shandora, Skypeia's city of gold, was also part of the Ancient Kingdom. Raftel could have been a more important location though, a political or religious center. What is likely important, as Fried said, is that Raftel contains the Rio Poneglyph. Rogers found the Rio Poneglyph and this is clearly the reason not only he was executed but his entire blood line extinguished. Ace was not killed because Roger was the Pirate King, he was killed because Roger knew the true history. Knowing the true history made Roger the most dangerous man in the world and meant everyone connected with him had to be killed.

I don't think one piece will be a moral lesson. The journey to find the One Piece will teach Luffy and crew the importance of friendship, individuality, tolerance, and being true to yourself. One Piece itself will also represent those qualities. Defeating the World Government will represent individuality and tolerance defeating intolerance and oppression. But One Piece will be an object and one that leads to the downfall of the World Government.

Could not have said it better myself. The true history is Rogers treasure, by dying he protected the location of the Rio Poneglyph from the World Government he left his treasure intact. What really interests me is why no one has been able to find Raftel yet, not after 20 years. While not easy, navigating the Grand Line is relatively straight forward: use the log pose and follow one of seven routes to Sabaody and the Red Line. If navigating the New World were so simple than surely pirates as strong as Shanks and White Beard would have reached Raftel by now. But what if reading the Poneglyphs is the only path to Raftel? One has to follow clues written by the ancients from one stone to the next, finally leading to Raftel. We already know that is what Roger did. It is entirely possible that navigating the New World, finding the One Piece, and learning the true history is wholly dependent on being able to read the ancient language.

The theories are endless, but i agree one piece is liking nothing at all. I'm sure Roger would know that to reach the end of the grand line, the crew would have to be one capable of understanding the true history of the void century and that any pirates dream would be achieved to be able to get there, fulfilling themselves and taking away any reason to need a monetary or physical treasure. Treasures have already been elaborated deeply in the story, so it's definitely not a physical thing that somehow has a great value. We already know SHs (except maybe nami :D) wouldn't care about gold, jewels, etc type treasure.

The theory about the dreams is the best i've heard, and probably the most likely. The way whitebeard says one piece does exist, he probably understands what it is by that. Since he no longer was looking for it, it also means that perhaps his goals and dreams are fulfilled by ruling as a king, building a family pirate crew, and nurturing the new era to find theirs, or probably something connected with a D. We don't really know his past so its hard to say for sure what his motives and intents were.

There's a lot of ways it can go, and its definitely more a symbol than an actual treasure, and probably something that only a D could have use for.

It is possible but "One Piece was in you the whole time" would be a let down after reading such a long title I don't think One Piece will be treasure, money, booze, or women but I do think Roger left something substantive to the next generation than a life lesson. The lesson will be learned on the way but I can not imagine that self fulfillment is all that will be found when the Strawhats reach Raftel.

My theory is that it is not that White Beard stopped looking for Raftel but that he could not find it. Unless it is later revealed that there are others who can read the Ancient Language, the Strawhats are the only crew that can find Raftel anyway.

Roger offering to tell Whitebeard the route to Raftel makes it clear that he did not know. We are also informed that Whitebeard is more interested in "D." On the next page Whitebeard makes a very clear statement about One Piece:
  • Only an elite, select few individuals have inherited the will of Roger.
  • Blackeard is not one, he and presumably many pirates, are merely pretenders.
  • While the bloodline of Roger has been extinguished, his "flame" has not.
  • That "flame" was something much older than Roger, passed down for many generations. Roger was merely one inheritor of many, another is bound to emerge.
  • The emergence of this person (Luffy) will lead to a great battle that will engulf the world.
  • The rediscovery of Rogers treasure will change the world. One Piece is something capable of restoring the world as it was before the World Government was created.
To state that Whitebeard was no longer looking is not necessarily correct. He likely was never looking and never interested in the first place. On page 11 of chapter 576 Whitebeard states that he became a pirate to find a family, not treasure. The implication of this is he never inherited the will of Roger, the willingness to fight for freedom against a corrupt, conformist world. Instead Whitebeard knew his role was similar to a father raising son, to find and nurture the future pirate king, not to be the pirate king himself. Thus he was interested in "D.", particularly in connection to William D. Teach, Blackbeard.

He also knew that One Piece was real, waiting for that special individual who inherited the will of Roger, a will passed down for generations, the so called "D." "D." represents a love freedom, following your dreams, being true to yourself, putting friends first, rejecting greed, and being a responsible adult. One Piece does not represent those things, it is more than a moral lesson. The moral lesson is the journey, whomever reaches Raftel will have achieved those qualities before they ever set foot on the island, let alone find One Piece. One Piece itself will be just as Whitebeard foreshadowed: something so dangerous to the world government that it will trigger another war. And One Piece itself will be something the Pirate King will be able to use in order to win the world and change history. It will be something far more practical than a moral lesson. It is already canon that the Rio Poneglyph, containing the true history, and the final poneglyph is located at Raftel. One Piece is clearly connected to the Ancient Kingdom. Whoever reaches Raftel will, like Roger, know the true history and have the capacity of restoring the Ancient Kingdom. That is the One Piece, not symbolic of an individual finding discovering the secrets of living a good life, but something capable of giving that already enlightened individual the power to bring freedom to the world, vanquishing greed, corruption, oppression, and conformity in the process.

I wonder that as well, but actually that's the biggest secret in One Piece, therefore it's very difficult to foresee what it is. I hope it won't end up being just a lot of gold...

I feel like Luffy himself could be One Piece. In the same way that Shirihoshi is Poseidon. We know that Gol D. Roger had the ability to "hear the voice of all things" Luffy has shown that he may possess that same ability through being able to hear the Sea Kings when destroying Noah.

Whitebeard one of few men who knows what One Piece is had no interest in it. I'm thinking that maybe to actually claim One Piece you need to either have this ability, which will unlock others or perhaps other treasures.

Either way I believe Luffy is the key to One Piece, or the great treasure himself.

I think the one piece is a device that moves the red line (serpent) and probably takes a few powers (like Loki, Shirahoshi, Luffy? Vegapunk / mother flame) to operate it. Likely Imu also found a way to operate it. Maybe with enough people (like the 20 kingdoms) you can control it?

Why: In some translations when Cody first talks about it he says it's "the power to connect all as one". Clearly the redline has separated the world with the calm belt and Mary Geoise controlling from above.

Likely somehow the redline forming also probably flooded the ancient world like a dam and so the ancient kingdom might be below the sea somewhere. Probably at reverse mountain.

But connecting all will also connect everyone's land and culture. Being an ancient piece of tech would also align with the old world of high tech but Roger alone couldn't operate it - needed someone who'd be around some 20 years later.

I'm also going to to on a wild one here that makes no sense yet but I think one of the reasons when massive haki is released and the sky is split - people are reversing the energy/currents caused by the redline / imu.

This device / previous world might be what Rocks was referring to as "the world" and could also be what Loki wants to "destroy".
