Re: Weekly Shonen Jump [2011] - Discussion and TOC Talk - Part 2

Maybe the fact that no serie is successful at the moment is because of series such as mago which poll terribly and only stay because they are historical. It's very hard for a new serie to survive at the moment. I hope Mago can end naturally but honestly its case is a bit unfair. I hope 2012 will be the year of renewal for Jump with the end of several veteran series
Um, Nurarihyon doesn't stay because it's historical, it isn't even four years old yet. It stays because it's profitable.

If you look at the top 50 series for 2011, and make a Top Weekly Jump series list, it looks like this:

1 One Piece 37,996,373
2 Naruto 6,874,840
3 Toriko 4,665,634
4 Gintama 4,415,491
5 Bakuman 4,399,938
6 Bleach 4,187,258
7 Sket Dance 3,157,012
8 Hunter X Hunter 2,922,876
9 Nurarihyon no Mago 2,853,552
10 Beelzebub 2,607,474
11 Katekyo Hitman Reborn! 2,550,542
12 Kuroko no Basuke 1,712,983
13 Medaka Box 1,111,444

That's not the sort of revenue stream you toss away just because of several weeks of low polls. Even assuming that half the price of a volume is printing/distribution costs, Nurarihyon's volume sales profits exceed Medaka Box's entire volume sales revenue. That's also true of Reborn, which is a bit closer to being "historical", but really, the only series kept because it's historical and not because of sales is Kochikame. And any editor stupid enough to try and force Kochikame to end will be fortunate if all that happens is that they get reassigned to some out of the way position in Shueisha.

Sort of. At some point Mago will move to another magazine, just like ToLoveRu and D. Gray Man did. Even JoJo's, one of the most popular Jump manga ever, switched magazines after it's TOC position collapsed. Jump won't cancel it outright, it is profitable, but they could engineer a move to SQ at some point in the future. But trying to predict when would be an exercise in futility, unlike trying to predict when a new, low ranking series will end.

Re: Weekly Shonen Jump [2011] - Discussion and TOC Talk - Part 2

No matter the reason, moving a series to SQ means it will sell less. It will come out at half the pace (thus make half the money), and lose fans (even if not much), plus it loses exposure to make new fans. Moving a series to SQ is risky and it sacrifices some amount of money and sales. It's not something that can be just said casually about a series just because it does badly in the ToC.

I'm not saying it won't happen, if the editors see it outweights the risks then it will, but it won't be a light decision that's guaranteed to happen.

Don't think so, SQ currently holds most of series with decent tank sales in out of all of monthly magazines. Plus, To Love-Ru's tank sale is actually more higher than when it was in Shonen Jump.

I think Nurarihyon can fit with SQ when it serialized into more mature magazine.

However, I also don't want Nurarihyon to move to SQ because it feels like SQ is becoming a recycling bin for Shonen Jump.

Shiibashi may even elect to end it early, who knows. He's still quite young, it's his first series (that I know of), and he may wanna try something new. Personally that's what I'd prefer. Mago, while I still enjoy it, has gotten a but stale recently, and since I think he has a ton of potential I'd like to see him do a new series. More than likely it would move though I guess :/

DGM and TLRD still sell the same.

It will come out at half the pace (thus make half the money)
The slower pace means that the series will be drawn out longer, so it will still make the same amount of money in the long run.

and lose fans (even if not much), plus it loses exposure to make new fans.
DGM's sales exceed the sales of Jump SQ magazine, so you can't say that moving series to SQ makes them lose fans. Blue Exorcist's sales also exceed the sales of Jump SQ magazine (not to mention Bleach and most of the current WSJ roster), so SQ series definitely have the potential to gain new fans.

Moving a series to SQ is risky and it sacrifices some amount of money and sales. It's not something that can be just said casually about a series just because it does badly in the ToC.
Mago has sales and an Anime to back it, so it would be foolish for them to outright cancel it. But it's no HxH in terms of its sales, so they can't just leave it at the bottom of the magazine. Either they cancel a series with decent sales and an established fanbase, or they could move it to another magazine. It makes perfect sense to me.

Re: Weekly Shonen Jump [2011] - Discussion and TOC Talk - Part 2

I'd say Nurarihyon is unlikely to be moved to another magazine. The likely-hood of that ranks not much above it being abruptly canceled IMO.

First of all, To-Love-ru did not move to Jump SQ. It ended. By all rumors, ended due to issue's in the artists personal life needing attending to. More than a year later, when the artist's personal life had been somewhat straightened out, he started a spin off/sequel, with a slightly different title, volume numbering starting from one, and a focus on different characters. And he opted to do it in Jump SQ as a monthly magazine would allow him to have more free time available than a weekly magazine.

D.Gray-man being moved to Jump SQ likely had little to do with it's TOC position, and plenty to do with the author's growing inability to meet a weekly deadline with anything resembling consistency. A random number of weeks on, then a week off, with some large hiatuses thrown in as well. At least with a monthly magazine she can produce a chapter consistently, even if she can barely manage as many pages as a weekly chapter some months.

Likewise, Steel Ball Run, the JoJo series that moved magazines, went roughly 10 weeks present, 10 weeks absent, 10 weeks present, 6 weeks absent, 2 weeks present, then absent and moved.

Similarly Beshari Kurashi moved to Weekly Young Jump, but it not only had TOC issues, but difficulties putting out a chapter every week just before it stopped running in Weekly Shounen Jump and started up in Weekly Young Jump several months later.

NekoMajin was a bunch of one shot chapters published by Akira Toriyama whenever he felt like it. Bastard publishes about as irregularly as Berserk, and that's pretty much it for series that moved magazines from Week Shounen Jump.

The bottom line is that "move to a different magazine" is not Jump's standard response to a low ranking, high selling series. It seems to be something they'll consider offering the option of if an author of a series they aren't looking to cancel for other reasons is having notable trouble putting out a chapter every week, or is just plain going to be extremely irregular, but otherwise they don't do it.

Granted it's still a possibility. It's not like Jump never tries anything new, and they've got some precedent with SBR and DGM to say that it'd be a viable possibility to move the series to a magazine whose polls might be more friendly to it. Still, they're more likely to see if the TOC rank can be raised with a new arc, and failing that have the author bring the series to a conclusion in the next 50-100 chapters.

Both TLR and DGM went through sizeable changes in their content (I do think Nurarihyon could shift to darker content, but unlike those other 2, it doesn't seem like Jump is restricting it as much as them. To begin with, if Nurarihyon moves, it will be for different reasons than those 2, like Krono said). And I didn't say SQ doesn't have exposure, I said it had considerably less than Jump's exposure, which I don't think is an unreasonable statement to make.

True about the length offsetting the pace. I assumed that Shueisha looks at revenue from a strictly yearly POV, but like you say, there's a possibility they look at revenue from a series POV. I have no clue which it is, so I can't say. You are right that it might not matter.
If I had to guess, I would still say they are looking from a fiscal year POV (their business issues yearly statements like every other, and investors wouldn't accept excuses like "it'll be the same in the long run", I think), but that would be just a guess with no proof.

I've been wondering, everyone is talking about Nura moving on to SQ.Since it is not faring well in Jump, what is the guarantee that it will fair well in SQ?I may be wrong, but from what I've heard Nura has got a good number of female fanbase.I don't know if the number of females reading SQ is that considerable, but if it is not, then it will fare poorly in SQ too, will it not?

Kurogane is also getting color in Issue 7 along with Nisekoi and Pakky.

Re: Weekly Shonen Jump [2011] - Discussion and TOC Talk - Part 2

The last total they gave with Toriko was it having over 11 million, and that was BEFORE volume 17 and the data book came out, which in total sold over 400K in a couple weeks. It's been growing in popularity since the anime came out, too. Just because it's growing at a slower rate doesn't make it less-selling overall. Some series are more eye-catching than others. Toriko's premise is fairly out of the ordinary. "A guy who searches for Gourmet Food" is a lot hard to latch onto than "Pirates on adventures" "Ninja trying to be the best Ninja" "Somebody trying to be the best in the country at a sport/game" etc. Plus the big/muscular protagonist is largely a popular concept from the previous generation and maybe doesn't fit in with the mainstream audience so much.

And as pointed out, it's sold really well recently since the anime came out, and has been going up. But besides that, if the manga itself is good and/or well liked by fans then it doesn't matter so much if not everyone's inclined to read it.

Jump Issue #7 Preview

Lead CP: Kuroko no Basket
Center Colour: Nisekoi, Kurogane, Genzon! Kodai Seibutsu-shi Pakki

Kurogane is getting a center colour as a thanks for the popularity, and Nisekoi is getting a center colour as a thanks for the huge popularity.

I wonder if this is a indication that the Nisekoi colour page will be placed in a higher position than the Kurogane colour page.

There was a lot of hype surrounding Toriko when it was new, some of it seemingly generated by Shueisha. It did seem that Shueisha was trying to promote it as the next blockbuster. Releasing two volumes simultaneously, consistently polling in the top five, being nominated for the first Manga Taisho award. Fair or not this raised expectations online. Many were expecting Toriko to pass Bleach on it's way to Naruto, rather than Shingeki no Kyojin and Ao no Exorcist becoming the next action blockbusters. While unquestionably a hit, I think more was expected and Toriko is unfairly judged based on what was expected rather than what was delivered.

Re: Weekly Shonen Jump [2011] - Discussion and TOC Talk - Part 2

Regarding Mago: Personally I feel as if Shiibashi wants to make the tone darker but can't due to isolating the dominant age group of WSJ. If he does moves to SQ, it will allow him to gain more freedom in his writing which would be nice to see. At the same time I don't want an automatic transference to SQ for every low-ranking-but-still-successful series.

Regarding Toriko: My theory is that young women are more likely to buy the tankobon rather than buy a magazine every week. (It might be why Mago fares better in tankobon sales since it has quite a number of female fans from fanart/fanfic sites, pixiv and blogs I've come across.) The character design of Toriko himself is not that appealing to the demographic so they would be less likely to buy it. Personally I enjoy looking at the quirky foods that are shown in the manga, but it's not exactly haute cuisine as well.

I know I'm generalizing, but hey, I'm going by what I see in fandom. :p

Since many people talk about whether Nurarihyon should move to SQ or not, so I have a question.

Does the editors choose a series to move to different magazine or a mangaka choses to move or both or neither?

If Bakuman is anything to go by, it seems to be sort of a compromise between both. Like a "we don't wanna cancel you so please let us move you to SQ (or w/e mag)".

The editor chief has the word, if a manga is movien to a different magazine or not, BUZT with an agreement of the mangaka.

One forgotten party is involved: SQ. The editorial staff of SQ has to agree to the move. The editors at Jump have little say in moving a series beyond meeting with their SQ counterparts. If they say no there is little the editorial staff of Jump can do to move the series.
