It's so much easier to talk about the series without using a bunch of Japanese phrases that don't need to be Japanese because the series itself doesn't have many Japanese characters in it! So basically I got over my weaboo phase, I still do prefer a few names though because they "sound cooler" like Senritsu over Melody, I don't like it when they translate names of characters, and am much more okay with it being used to translate the meaning behind the name of a place or group of people. My argument with Senritsu being that once you translate some names, where does it end? I wouldn't exactly call her name a pun, this also goes for what I think of translating the Shadow Beasts names (shadow beasts and phantom troupe are fine because they are a group name) Again I think its to each their own, there isn't necessarily a right or wrong in this situation.
Melody's name is most likely an alias, and if it's not, it can only be a pun... leaving it untranslated leaves the meaning out just as much as using "Yorkshin" instead of "Yorknew."
And I'm not sure why you wouldn't translate the Shadow Beasts' names -- they're named after animals. This is exactly WHERE you should translate names. Melody's should be argued more to be left untranslated, not the Shadow Beasts. Unlike Melody's name, which is written in katakana: センリツ (like most of the characters in HxH), the Shadow Beasts' names are pure kanji. For instance, Porcupine's name is 豪猪, not ゴウチョ.

Isn't Pansy Gum just a dumb subtitle mistake? the Aku Fansubs kinda blow, I mean in comparison to what Viz and Crunchyroll have done for the series. Viz translations I love over Edited Mangas: Morel over Morau, Zoldyck over Zaoldyeck (granted thats how Togashi spells it) Knov over Knovu, and Flutter over Furatta (seriously, I can't believe the Manga Editors used that one till the end)
Yes, it's a dumb subtitle mistake. The attack name is "バンジーガム (banjii gamu)" when it's written in katakana.
AKU's subtitles are really bad... They also used "Vush" for "Zushi" numerous times, zenni over jenny, and a slew of other terribly wrong terms.

I also don't understand why people still use Kuroro Lucifer over Lucilfer when it is so blatantly wrong. ルシルフル = rushirufuru; ru = lu, shi = ci, ru = l, fu = fe, ru = r. Going with "Lucifer" totally leaves out one of the ル ru's... People really hate on Chrollo too, but at least using "Kuroro" isn't as idiotic as "Lucifer."

-sorta ranty/offtopic, but these names are relevant to the upcoming arc in the anime!-

I prefer the Visism to be honest. The Edited Manga translation just sounds awkward to me.

Gon "So you really are strong"

Killua "Don't make a serious expression while saying that. I'm ashamed."

:no

Who talks like that? Nobody I know of. I think something better would be...

Gon "You're really strong!"

Killua "Hey! You're embarrassing me!"

It gets the same point across without the awkward language and incredibly useless point of Gon's "serious expression".

Though I still like the Vizism best. I just like the joke and it matches well with Killua's expression who looks like he's just so proud of his drawing ability.

Freddy..No? Hisoka!

Is a bit silly though. I'm guessing the reference is Freddy Krueger?

People will complain about how inaccurate Viz translations are and I dunno if that is true but I prefer them some awkwardly worded translation
that sounds like it came out of Babelfish. Sorry, I don't mean to bash on the fan translators. They are doing a service for free and do a better
job than I certainly could. But sometimes it seems like they try too hard to be literal and accurate to the original that they forgot that the
audience are not native Japanese speakers but rather probably speak English as their first language. The less I can tell something was
translated the better. And it's awkward wording that makes me ask "Nobody actually speaks like that. What's going on here?"
I'm sure someone will say "Oh but you don't know Japanese so you don't understand." Yeah? I shouldn't HAVE to know Japanese
to enjoy a book translated into ENGLISH no matter WHAT the original language was in. I DO appreciate that they are trying to convey
the original message of the author but being too literal actually ends up having the opposite effect. Of course I can only complain
so much when these translations are free and immediate. I'm not really expecting any changes. But I suppose if you're a fan translator
and you're reading this. Instead of getting insulted consider it as advice to becoming a better translator. And if you rather not then just ignore me.
But one final thing for me to say on this is that if you need a foot note to explain your translation...Then it's not a very good translation. At least IMO.
Of course there are exceptions like explaining when the Meiji Period was or something like that. But when it's some joke about some kanji looks
like another kanji I'm quite terribly sorry but no matter how much you explain it it won't be funny to me. Ever.

Oh and I'm not gonna say I like the Vizism better because it's more accurate. I doubt that. I just think the line is funny.

I say Chrollo Lucifer because well given the whole upside down cross, butchering the Kurata Tribe, causing much havoc and destruction, and being an all around immoral fellow who I think is supposed to be handsome well it just kinda sounds like a little like a certain fallen angel. Rucifer just sounds like someone is "so ronery."

Lucilfer is hard for me to say, I usually say Lucifer in conversation but I do like the spelling Lucilfer, again its hard for me to say that's all. I flip flop on Kuroro-Chrollo, I like how Kuroro looks better. Some of these preferences are just those guys, preferences. reading your argument though I didn't think about Melody being an alias, that makes a certain amount of sense being a Mafia bodyguard and all. But if its the persons name I think thats more important then the "meaning" behind the name. So I tend to stick with Senritsu anyway, with the Shadow Beasts those do seem more like codenames kinda like with the Zodiacs.

And yes sticky, its totally a Freddy Krueger reference. I lol'd. 1 of my favorite new Hunter X Hunter quotes now. Changing my sig accordingly.

As it stands, Viz have actually done their best translation work on Hunter x Hunter. There was never a point where I felt it to be inaccurate.

I speak both languages and I do find it very odd that English fans are so against using proper transliterations/translations.

Wouldn't you prefer something that makes sense in your language? Most Engllish friends of mine struggle to say Kuroro but refuse to say Chrollo because 'its wrong' apparently. Which dumbfounds me.

The same can be said for using Genei Ryodan, what the hell does that mean to an English speaker? It is nonsense to English speakers but they use it (despite not being able to properly pronounce it) because they refuse to acknowledge proper translations because 'its wrong'.

Don't get me started on the people who think Chrollo's name is actually Danchou -_-'

I use the terms the manga over here uses. Genei Ryodan, Yorkshin, Kuroro. The pun in Yorkshin isn't lost, after all, that's what translation notes are for.

One spelling I find really dumb though is Kurta. It just seems... wrong. It makes me think that people will suddenly start spelling Kurapika as Krapika.

I don't see why it should be such an issue to use the English translation names/terms, and at the same time I don't see why it should also be an issue for someone to use the Japanese ones. Some times people use them simply because they prefer them. I for instance prefer to use the term "Zanpakutou" rather than "Soul Reaper" (Bleach), and at the same time I use "Esquire" rather than "Exwire" (Blue Exorcist). And about the whole "not understanding the meaning behind the name/word", I really don't think that matters in most cases. I mean look at all the foreign names/words the Japanese use in manga and anime (ex: Bleach and all it's Spanish and German words). In a lot of cases translators include a note explaining what the word means, and in my case I usually remember the meaning. I know that "Shadow Clone Jutsu" is basically what "Kagebunshin no Jutsu" means, yet I still prefer the latter.

Anyway, despite this discussion about names being really interesting, I think we should go back to a more anime-related topic of discussion. I really enjoyed the last episode (which really is the norm for me) even though it didn't really cover that much manga material. Next episode looks like a recap (oh joy...). Censoring really doesn't seem to be much of an issue now. I'm actually surprised they showed Gon cutting his eye rather than just implying it. I'm really glad too since I love that scene (Gon's such a badass!). And now we're so close to seeing Nen! Can't wait!

PS: About people mispronouncing names and words found in manga and anime, those are usually native English speakers. From what I've seen and heard they usually aren't that great when compared to native speakers of other languages. I think native speakers of Romance languages tend to pronounce them better (like the Portuguese for instance :D).

Actually, senritsu means Melody in English, so it is more of a direct translation.

I don't think there's any problem whether someone uses the English or the Japanese names, or Kuroro/Chrollo, etc. as long as everyone understands what you mean. I prefer the Japanese terms because it's more "universal" (I live in Brazil, so it would be weird if I kept changing between terms), and it just rolls of the tongue really smoothly when you say them, at least for me.

I don't mind the translation issues debates in here, since it's somehow ontopic and I actually think this forum needs activity while we're on Hiatus. So it's ok. As far it doesn't override anime debate is fine.

About the names, I tend to pick those who are easier for me to remember. Purist my ass, it's easier for me to say Genei Ryodan than Phantom Troupe. Or Senritsu over Melody. Or Morel over Moreau, or Novu instead of Knov...Kuroro over Chrollo. FOR CHRIST SAKE CHROLLO SOUNDS AWFUL.
Probably I think it has to do that my own language has similar pronunciation in most cases.

^ This. It's hard to shake the names you were introduced to first honestly.

In my opinion Genei Ryodan is cool, Phantom Troupe is lame.

And I do understand that. Phantom Troupe sounds a bit generic compared to Genei Ryodan. But that doesn't mean it's wrong either.

To go back to the topic for a bit, are we getting a recap episode every 13 episodes? I guess they need something to make sure the manga won't catch on with the hiatus and redone artwork for the volumes.

I am a person that speaks both languages, but I find it awkward using the Japanese names/pronunciations instead of the English translations when speaking English with people. Chrollo is the transliteration of Kuroro whats so bad about it? The major problem I see is that people misuse terms and names specifically 'Danchou' and people calling the Bomber, 'Boma/Bohma'... Why? I just do not understand the logic of some people. Why make things harder on yourselves when you don't understand or speak the language? haha

The thing is, we are all speaking English on this forum correct? That is why I find it more than a little jarring seeing romaji used instead of the proper English names/terms, specifically the ones that don't mean anything to English speakers such as 'Genei Rydoan'. But at the end of the day, this is a never ending discussion. Noone's gonna ever agree on what is the right terms to use when discussing this series.

Just wanna say, please for the sake of my sanity no more using 'Boma/Bohma' PLEASE. Whatever scan group that did that needs a smack in the head.

The recap seems to be following the last recap in being due to a major holiday taking place on the same day (Easter this time).

There was a break between episodes 13 and 14, right? Is there another holiday this month?

We can't be mad because animators celebrate Easter, can we? Be that Easter or another Holiday. Let the workers have a break xD

Easter. But it's Japan so I'm thinking it might be another holiday.
Easter is celebrated in Japan, much like Christmas is, but that's only the Christian families.
There is a Shinto version of the holiday which is much more commonly celebrated, but yes point is, this weekend there is a Holiday. Recap episodes aren't all bad, I think of them as just a breather for both the animators and the audience. We have big things coming soon, after this I don't think we will see another recap for a long time (maybe one after York New) but as with all long running series recaps are unfortunately inevitable due to a number of reasons. I don't have a problem with them as long as they are at the very least a nice summation of recent events and told in an interesting way. I like these Mito recaps as we get to see more of her.

From what I know of those recap,is basically about Gon sending Mito a letter to tell her about what's happening?

I wonder would it affect the episodes later on because ever since Gon left for the hunter exam ,he never call, send her a letter or visited her until august (according to the manga). But if it is a filler episode,it wouldn't affect it ,right?

While I didn't watch the episode ,I think it will be a bit weird for Gon to tell her about all the hunter exam and visiting the Zolydck. With all the deaths and stuff,it is a wonder if Mito don't freak out.

Dear Mito,
During the hunter exam,I met some new friends ,met a pedophile that tried to kill me and my friends, saw one of my friend rip the heart out of his opponent and then knowing that friend is from a family of assassin.I had to hunt down the pedophile for one of the test.I also got my arm broken because I refused to surrender during the last test.I also went to visit and get back my friend from his family.I went inside the famous zoldyck family home ,met a guard dog that could eat a person up,nearly got my face beaten to a pulp by one of the butler.Though I was finally able to met my friend after all of that.:D

If Gon really send a letter like that,I'm pretty sure Mito will freaked out.
