It sucked seeing the fight cut off blood and it certainly reduced my hopes for the upcoming one.
By blood you mean this bruise? Like it mattered to the plot.

If I were satisfied with just the plot then I wouldn't have started watching this adaptation to begin with.

Im pretty disappinted in Gon's fight but I give this an 8 though. The ebst part of the ep was Kurapika and masters appearance.

Provided you have realistic understanding then you would have looked at the amount of violence 'One Piece' can get away with at its more kid-friendly time slot than that of HxH. By defending it and insulting others when it's obvious that something has been screwed up you only put your fan boy position above critical judgement, which is utterly wrong.
Even One Piece gets censored sometimes.

Hey I wanted to see that bruise too. Sure it doesn't really matter since Gon gets
seriously injured anyways but if they can show Gon cut his eye open why can't
they show him cutting a bruise? Heck it doesn't even have to be as bloody as the
manga made it. They can just have a reddish mark. I'd be cool with that.
But they didn't show anything.

Though I'm gonna say it was more due to the laziness of the animaition team this time
rather than censorship since the real problem in this episode is the lack of animation.

I give this episode a 7 out of 10 as it WAS a good episode as far as what happens
and all that jazz. But this was one episode where great animation was needed.

They didn't even have good animation or ok animation. They had virtually zero animation.

---------- Post added at 06:35 AM ---------- Previous post was at 06:29 AM ----------

Maybe holding the budget for Kastro vs. Hisoka and Hisoka vs. Gon?
I do think the fight was animated well enough though for something that really isn't much of a fight to begin with haha.
I'm sincerely hoping for that.

Well, let me put it this way. If the 1999 version could animate Gon vs Gido then why can't the 2011 version animate it?

But anywho the 2011 version SHOULD surpass the 1999 version in terms of animation.

What good is it to watch a subpar version of the fight? They BETTER not give Gon vs Hisoka this kind of treatment.

One Piece airs on Sunday night at 8.30pm. Hunter x Hunter airs on Sunday morning 10.55am. How is One Piece in a more kid-friendly time slot? I'm not insulting others nor am I being fan-boyish. Just having a level of common sense and understanding of animation and anime production. I explained that still animation actually serves a purpose in some instances and backed it up yet I am apparently a fan boy who is above critical judgement? Okay then. I'm sorry for not hating on things when there is justification for it or it didn't detract from my experience. Regardless, believe as you will, I prefer not to bother arguing with someone who can not even do a modicum of research when making outlandish claims such as One Piece being in a more kid-friendly time slot than Hunter x Hunter.

I'm of the opinion that this was less of a censorship issue and more of a lazy animation issue.
I think they didn't draw the bruise simply because it was easier not to.

I dunno it's possible that they thought that nobody cares too much for Gon vs Gido anyways and that Hisoka's battles were all that really mattered.

I mean what do people remember more? Of course Hisoka's battles are what people remember.

But it irks me still because Gon vs Gido COULD be excellent. This was bad to ok (the fight that is. ) The 1999 fight was good but not excellent.
The 1999 Gon vs Gido had good animation but I can't say it was excellent animation as most of it was just repeated images and far away shots.
But at least it was animated. That Madhouse failed to even meet the standards of the 1999 version's animation is actually rather sad.

Censorship is one thing and if the rest of the series is censored heavily (which I hope not) then well that's that.

But I EXPECT better animation than something made 13 years ago

Zero Animation? That's a little over the top wouldn't you say?
Sure their was no real significant sakuga scenes, but did there need to be?

In the 1999 series, one thing they did often was misplaced sakuga animation, the battle with Gido was one of those in my humble opinion atleast. The other major misplacement is the fight with Hanzo. Gon can not fly, yet both these fights make Gon seem capable of defying gravity in favour of a pretty scene that ultimately does not serve a purpose. I am a firm believer in purposeful animation over pointless sakuga, that would end up resulting in a blown budget (see Evangelion).

There is a time and a place for everything and I think that we will get the real gorgeous animation in the next two episodes.

I know we all love to see sakuga animation, but there are times when it's just not necessary. It takes a skilled director with a lot of restraint to know when to use sakuga and when to use standard animation.

Was the battle in need in super animation? All what Gon did was standing still, dodging and get hit once in a while. There were no super moves that needs to be animated in a super fashion.

I think that a lot of people might be missing the point. The battle between Gon vs. Gido isn't the most important part of the episode. All it does is explain that Gon naturally learned Zetsu during the Hunter Exam arc; it's more of him reusing a technique we've seen him do before. Thus, the animation was fairly lackluster. But the animation quality significantly improved starting from Killua's conversation with Wing. Look at the framerate and the motion from thence point onward. Both that scene and Kurapika's segment are well-animated because they're what matter more in the end.

One more thing: Crunchyroll mistranslated a line that is extremely crucial in setting the tone of the series from thence onward. Instead of Wing saying "I may have awakened an incredible beast," he clearly says "unstoppable beast." I'm actually quite surprised that it was mistranslated to such a degree. The former line implies a positive tone, whereas the latter? Well, those eerie choirs were placed during Gon and Killua's meditation scene for a reason.

Sorry to disappoint Sherlock but I do my homework before stating something and if you need more details then I'd add that it airs on Sundays at 9:30AM.

I have to say that I really liked the intro. And the scene with Kurapika was movie-quality. From colors to animation, it felt like so. I actually LOVED that scene.

Except for this pose, in particular:

But aside that, excellent.
Boys and Wing interaction was handled quite good. Particulary enjoyed their conversation and when Killua smiles at Wings saying it's too late already. Epic.

The lack of chair and closeness makes me think producers WANT to show a high level of homoerotic relationship between Gon and Killua. Not that I'm mad about it :3c

About the blood...I think it was just laziness in the animation rather than censorship. If you look, there is a lot of animation and movement of Gon's head. When you don't see the feets moving it does look as lack of animation, but now I think that they just picked wrong their focus in this battle.

Yeah I really don't see what the big deal is. This isn't the most important battle in the series so expecting movie quality animation would be a bit much. Sure there were a few too many static scenes but that didn't bother me at all honestly. The highlight of this episode was definitely Kurapika's meeting with Mizuken. The acorn bulllet scene was just badass. I don't think we'll actually see Kurapika's training though, his scene mostly served to show viewers that he too would learn about Nen. I loved the "Death Note-esque" music that played during Gon and Killua's training. Made me shiver and all! xD

dang it I wrote a whole bunch but looks like it didn't go through.

anywho in reply to Futurefrog , Shinobi-3 and Popo

Y'all seem to think that I'm asking for Hayao Miyazaki here. I'm not. I'm just asking for the fight to be animated.
Something like Gon and Killua vs Netero would have been great. There we got some great animation with some
well timed still shots. If they did something like that with Gon vs Gido, I would be fine.

But it was clear they were not trying in this episode.

THE ONLY EXCUSE I'LL ACCEPT IS IF THEY WERE SAVING THEIR RESOURCES FOR HISOKA VS KASTRO.

They BETTER NOT give that fight lackluster animation and then give Hisoka vs Gon awesome animation just because the latter is more popular!

I'm NOT expecting movie quality animation (that I would be VERY happy with it) I'm just expecting it to be animated. Get the difference?

BTW as I said before (I think unless it was another forum)

I give the episode a 7 out of 10.

Which is still a good rating.

The lack of animation is what killed it.

I probably should've worded that correctly. I get that a lot of people weren't expecting movie quality but at least some pretty good animation like Hisoka vs that guy in Trick Tower. I'd love that too, but I'm really not that disappointed with what we actually got. But if you look at what Uriel showed with the GIFs there was animation, despite there also being a lot of still shots.

I fully agree with you. I watched this with the Nippon episode next to it and it wasn't really all that different. Gon vs Gido isn't that important and people need to remember this is an anime that might go 100+ episodes. An average episode of Hunter X Hunter looks better than an average episode of say Naruto.
http://29.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_m3...p4x9o1_500.gif

The only time where there were a lot of still images was when Gon dodged some tops. Even then they showed it in the flashback. Many people aren't even talking how well done Kurapica's scene was. Not too mention the incredible music direction.

Same here, I don't know what the problem is with this whole animation issue. When I was watching the episode, the still images didn't bother me at all, I mean there were more still images than usual but look at what Uriel posted earlier. I wouldn't consider this having "zero" animation, I get that someone was tyring to make a point but that was just generalizing the episode a bit. It might've been sub par considering the potential Madhouse has, but we should save the controversy for the next episode (if there is any, but it's almost guaranteed to have reactions like the ones from killua vs jones, some way some how haha).

OK, I wanted to ask you about something similar a while ago, in episode 24 when Silva was talking to Kikyo at 21:20, he said something like "wakatteru janeka" and it was translated "So you understand what's at stake" but it sounded to me that he said "So you don't understand", which is the right one? thanks.

Yeah, I didn't really see any problems with today's episode. Really enjoyed it, excellent music selection. If there was one detail which I had to nitpick about, it would be that, when Gon got hit while using Zetsu, his face didn't really seem "in pain" as the manga. The face is exactly the same, but the drawing style in the manga makes it seem really painful... I don't know.

I'm not worried about future fights. We already saw what Madhouse is capable of in the Netero ball game, and in various other occasions. I'm curious how they will handle the next episode, though...

Also, white-haired Kastro? That'll be interesting to see!
