Sorry, I sort of tuned out after you called Xavi "extremely overrated" :oh
Perhaps the use of the word 'extremely' was a bit harsh, but Xavi is overrated. He doesn't deserve to be in the UEFA Pro XI, for example.

Anyway, regardless of any of that, that's not a reason not to discuss the issue, although given that I'm not sure if you're interested in Bayern politics, it's probably not that high on your list of interests.

I was just being a smartass...seemed appropriate with that level of hyperbole though.

I'm actually interested in why Pep chose the job. I guess he saw it as the easiest to succeed in. Going to a dominant team like Barca, with an equal or even less level of competition within the league.

All right then.

It was the easiest job for Pep to succeed at. The Chelsea job required rebuilding time and having to deal with Roman, for example, He actually ends up going to a more complete side than Barca, although Bayern lacks the explosiveness of a player like Messi.

Who does? Lampard?

No, of course not. Lamps, while I love him, is old and can't run anymore. Marco Reus or Ozil, in my opinion, should be there.

Don't tell me that you really believe that Pique deserved to be there? :frown

Really? I think he's a different player. Ozil and Reus are more comparable to Iniesta and Messi. He is not as heavily involved in getting or assisting with goals. He tends to leave the final product to more suitable players. But his ability to find space, dictate tempo and control games has not diminished. Xavi is one of those players who is appreciated more when he is not there. Barca with Xavi and Barca without are two entirely different beasts.

If you were going to compare him fairly, an easy one would be Xabi Alonso.

Pique is a different story. There are better center backs than him, not that he isn't a good player.

The Xabi-Xavi comparison is probably more appropriate than comparing him to players like Ozil or Reus for sure. Even though Xabi Alonso tends to play deeper than most attacking mids do. A lot like Pirlo does, in my mind.

I actually think Pep at Munich will find winning the Bundesliga a bigger challenge then in the La Liga with Barca. Sure, with the current stats it looks like an easy scoop for him but I don't see winning the german league as straight forward like others may depict it as. I honestly haven't seen a lot of games but the season start is more crucial in that league. I also think there are more teams in that league that can cause an upset for the "dominant" national team(s). I'm sure with the disappointment of losing out in two recent CL finals, Munich are even more fired up to win it. I guess it really is a matter of time now~

Bugzee, don't forget that Dortmund won the Bundesliga the last two seasons, although Bayern's already out of sight for the league title this season. I think that they're 15 points clear of second place.

When Gomez's lead feet meant that he didn't even get a single shot on target in the CL Final, regardless of the act that he was fed like five times in the box, Gomez didn't get blamed. No, instead, Robben was blamed for the loss because Cech had his best season of his career. Did you know that Cech hadn't saved a penalty for Chelsea before the 11/12 season?
First of all, thank you very much for all the insight! It’s always nice to hear how one’s national league is seen overseas. It was quite illuminating. :nod

Oh, get out… I didn’t know. Makes it even worse.

If there is one guy I blame for not winning the title last year it’s Anatoliy Tymoshchuk. For me (and many other Bayern fans) the dude has become a real "persona non grata". Tymo is one of the best penalty shooters I have ever seen: he’s taken dozens of them for his national team and his former clubs and has a ridiculously strong shot he can even position well… still he did not have the stones to take it. – Even though Müller and our former Sporting Director Nerlinger were literally begging him.
A professional with his CV and status has to take responsibility at times like these. He did not. Thus Olic had to take the shot and failed. I do not blame the Croat because he at least had the courage to make an attempt.

As for Gomez:
I think that has only been the case for the international press then. The guy has been getting crap for years. Even Hoeneß had been shooting against him after the final. (He said "Gomez is a striker of international class. But if we had a world class striker we would have won the UCL title…," supposedly in hope of spurring him on but I don’t think that’s the case.)
And during Euro 2012 former player Mehmet Scholl (nowadays working as a TV commentator/expert) had been pulling a similar stunt by stating Gomez is moving so little on the pitch he sometimes fears he has to turn him over with a spatula so the striker is not getting bedsore.

I don't really like Heynckes as a manager, but I do feel bad for him. Even if he wins the CL this season, Heynckes gets sacked, which would even be worse than the treatment that RDM got from Abramovich this season, because at least RDM got to have the manager's job, even though we knew that Roman would sack him at some point. In fact, Heynckes has already been sacked because Mr. "I'm unproven without having the best player in the world to use" Guardiola has been hired.
Well, it’s only understandable really… Heynckes is in my opinion NO modern team manager. He just is not up-to-date. He’s an old-timer whose job was to inherit a team with a tactical focus/philosophy that Louis van Gaal had set up. His main focus was to strengthen the defense, which he did over the last two seasons. (And he did a great job in doing so! Compare attached graphic.) Another job of his was to "entertain" the players and bring the fun back. He also succeeded in doing so due to his charming personality and qualities as a mediator/moderator.

But seriously, what else is there for Heynckes to do?

He is no master tactician or somebody who will develop a new identity for our team. He’s an administrator and custodian who has done his job. We must not make the mistake and stop at this point or rest on our laurels. "If you don’t go forwards you go backwards!" (We already made that mistake back in 2001.)
We need to continue improving. We need to progress and advance. This is a great squad, maybe the best Bayern team we had since the 70’s. I think they have the potential to become the best team in Europe bar none, i.e. the squad to kick Barca off the throne. – It will not be easy and will still need a lot of hard work and great efforts, but Heynckes is not the man this can be accomplished with. Of that I am sure…

__

In other news: We spanked Werder Bremen today with 6-1 at Allianz Arena. Arjen was a starter and became Man of the Match. (1 goal, 2 assists, most sprints, intense runs and shots taken of all players and brilliant ratio of tackles won.) :hip

Darn, I’m so happy for the Dutch. He totally deserves it after his dark last year. He’s still the most valuable weapon in our offense.

Lahm is also finally playing at his best again. He's proving that he was and still is, without doubt, one of the best full-backs in the world. Another guy who is on fire this season is Javi "Majestínez". Oh boy, what an elegant defense monster he is. Fans here love him already and call him Majestínez and "Magnetínez" amongst other things.

Good to know.

Oh, get out… I didn’t know. Makes it even worse.
For years, Cech was a great shot stopper, but an awful penalty saver. In the 07/08 Final, Ronaldo missed, but Cech didn't save his penalty. Last season in the CL, Cech turned things around with three saves out of six Bayern penalties.

Perhaps, but not everyone wants to take one all the time. Freaking Neuer took one and scored, shockingly.

If he's been getting crap in Deutschland for years, why'd Bayern buy him, because he scores? He scores in meaningless games. If you had Cavani or RVP or someone like that, you might've killed us like 5-0 in the Final.

At times, it looks as if Gomez is glued to one spot and just hopes that the ball will bounce off him into the net.

True, but you don't have to be an amazing manager. In Chelsea history, for example, Roberto Di Matteo is our most storied manager of all time because he was an inspiring defensive manager, but he didn't really know how to play an offensive style.

Heynckes isn't a Jose, a Pep, or a Joachim Low, but that's not the point. Heynckes could be considered to have failed, actually, as he didn't get a title the last two seasons and the club didn't win the CL.

Bayern is already a more solid, complete side than Barca, but Bayern lacks an explosive striker.'

That graphic is a bit deceiving because most of it is against bad teams in the Bundesliga where you can't really judge. Bayern is a top defensive team, but their stats get padded a little bit.

Well, that's good to hear. I'd like for Robben to get a CL title before he retires.

The one thing about Lahm is that he's a right footed LB, which is kind of odd, although he can play as a RB. Still, he is one of the best fullbacks in the world. Martinez was a great buy, there's no denying that.

Well another hard match for Milan today, I do think they can get over the hype of what they did this week. The coach should train them in that regard, Inter is not that strong this season, but it will be tight.

I don't think that it's all about the manager, but perhaps the manager is more important than we'd previously thought for Barca.

Fans of the club here seem to think that is the case. But I do agree with them to a degree, Barca was a bit more stable with Pep.

Btw, lol, people seem to be calling Jordi Roura - Muttley here. :XD

Yeah, Barca was more stable and better with Pep.

I don't understand the Muttley reference.

He started the whole passing tica taca thing, of course they are still implementing it not in it's original form.

Um, it has something to do with the way he looks, his chin is a reminder of Muttley's. :XD
