If Hasegawa Tomohiro already gets serialized what was the point of him entering Jump VS?
Even if he would win he already has a series...smells like the "insider" that said Iwashiro will have a new action series with Miyokawa Masaru as an artist in last year issue 48, only after that came a real insider with correct information for the next endings and serializations.

Of course it will. Obata is known for battle manga, right? He's never done anything outside the Jump norm. All generic tournament manga from him.

So does it mean that a battle manga in jump will be generic, whoever write it ? As for me I wouldn't mind to see what they could do with this genre, especially with the curreng lineup.

I'd be rather bummed if Medaka ended, but at the same time, I feel like it could have ended on a good note a few times in the past already. Not really too pleased with the current arc.

I know and I disagree with the sarcasm since i believe these authors can pretty much do every genre they want, battle manga include.

actually i don't know if i would like a battle manga by ot, because i simply can't imagine something that would fit their style in this genre as good as their previous stories. on the other hand if they try a battle manga then they know that they need to deliver and won't do a generic one. whatever they do, i only expect something great and new.

assclass would be something like a "new" battle manga, even if it is not 100% original it gives the genre a different approach.

If Ohba and Obata are really coming back that's great news. After Death Note and Bakuman I've faith that they came up with something great again. I kinda doubt it's going to be a pure "battle manga" but ofc you never know. The only sure thing is that it's not going to be something generic

And I'm really pleased with the TOC. When I remember the old TOC's with the same series always at the top for such a long time, I'm really glad things have changed so much. I don't really see it as a decline in popularity for these series but more of a good sign the fans finally have the competition they wished for. The TOC has long stopped being boring and predictable, nowadays it's pretty hard to tell which series are going to take the top spots (besides OP I guess XD). WSJ's current lineup is way more varied and strong than it was for quite some years and that fact alone makes me really happy.

Yeah, the names are definitely mixed up. The furigana above the mangaka's name on the colour page definitely says Yagi Tomohiro.

Actually, yes. By any definition of the word, Jump action manga tend towards the generic. Even the best of them (One Piece, HxH, Toriko, for example) closely follow an established template. The good ones are simply better at working within the template. Jump has a reputation as an assembly line for a reason. Obata has already done an action manga, Blue Dragon Ral Grad, after Death Note but before Bakuman. It was canceled after four volumes.

If you think about it, Bakuman was a battle manga of sorts. Though not the action battle manga you think of automatically when you hear the word "battle" or "tournament" associate with manga.

It was a prediction by jose I guess, and I wouldn't be surprised if he was being sarcastic himself for the same reasons that were stated.

Competition definitely was an important element to Bakuman, and it was almost paced like an action manga. Competition is not exclusive to action battle though. Bakuman could also be compared to a sports manga, or manga about competitive games, like Hikaru no Go or Chihayafuru.

Yeah, I think the main characters even explored the concept of an unconventional battle manga in the series. Tournament manga and many Sports manga have a ton of similarities, but are treated differently due to the element of sport.

But to go back to the original topic, I wouldn't feel confident predicting anything Ohba and Obata do

Jump sports manga certainly can have many similarities with Jump action. Eyeshield 21 in particular felt like an action manga. The pace, the format, the way the characters "leveled up" throughout the series. Not as much when you read sports manga from other magazines, but certainly in Jump.

Obata probably will be predictably unpredictable. This is the guy who did a manga about Go in a shounen magazine. I'd still rather they follow Inoue out of Jump, but so it goes. Whatever they do should at least be interesting.
