ha, i didn't check the amazon link. it's called both Food Wars AND Shokugeki no Soma? That's novel. exclamation mark next to a colon though... ugh.

as to why this and seraph appear to be getting print editions before WT, i imagine it's related to their hesitance to go all in on it, in case it doesn't make it a full year (though they've made clear their intentions to do more with it if it lives that long with the two one-shots, so who knows). One Punch Man not having a print release yet probably relates to the erratic schedule and them not wanting to have diminishing returns if there's a substantial delay? I dunno, I don't know enough about that series' inner workings to really think about it.

I would call it "Soma's Food Wars"...but that's probably too wordy. Either way, congrats to Soma for getting licensed! But wait, why is it listed on having 3 authors? Shouldn't it just be two: the writer and the illustrator?

The lady chef is a key collaborator though unless the writer and the artists are really that skilled with cooking. I wonder how they got together.

Morisaki Yuki is also collaborating for providing the idea for food.

They got together because Morisaki was writing things (and maybe modelling) for Shueisha's Playboy magazine, from there they got connected

Yes, that's what she said when she appeared in Sakiyomi JumBang.

Food Wars sounds more apt for Toriko, if you ask me.
They probably should have just named this Soma's food or Soma's Adventure or something.

I think it is a similar collabaration to the guy who helps Fuyumi Souryo in Cesare.

On the other hand... It doesn't matter. Viz only sells to its insulated audience more often than not. they, as most int'l manga/anime publishers, only really advertise within the pre-existing circles of fandom. People'll buy in on what it is over what it's called.
According to Jason Thompson (former editor at VIZ, the first editor of US Shounen Jump magazine), Japanese publishers set very strict rules for licensing parties about where, and how, manga is advertised. It is from an article he wrote in 2012 about the state of the manga publishing industry. The article was published before the launch of Shounen Jump online, otherwise it's up to date. The amount of anime on TV is back on the rise. Streaming anime is also more popular than ever. I'm not sure how much that will effect international manga. There are still many successful manga adaptions, like Magi and SnK, with the latter (at least) getting a definite boost. Many of the most popular anime now are original stories or based on light novels, which doesn't help manga directly.

---------- Post added at 01:10 PM ---------- Previous post was at 12:10 PM ----------

Yeah the 4th season of TWD is much better than the third. :D

Man Oda has the honor to meet so many famous mangaka, must feel like being the king of pop during the 80/90s and meeting the legends from the 50/60/70s.

To be fair, how would you translate 食戟 into English? I guess they could try to retain the original pronunciation shokugeki, but then that'd make it sound like a board game.

It's the same problem they went through trying to translate 戦星 (sensei) into English, and they approached it the same way: eliminating the expression altogether (though they did translate it as "warring planets" later on, even though there might not even be a perfect translation for the expression).

For 戦星, I would translate into either "Battle Star," "War Star," "Battle Planet," or "War Planet."

I agree, 食戟 is difficult to translate. If I actually translate into English, then it'll be either "Gourmet Halberd" or "Gourmet Spear." And WTF is that?

Chapter 9 is what it's all about: a "challenge" between cooks with a form of "compensation" for the loser to offer.

Hmm... that sure helped a lot, didn't it? Maybe they should've just written it off as a proper noun and be done with it altogether like Erina with Goudabayashi.

After all, wasn't that the idea of that term up until that point; something no one, not even a Japanese-fluent person, would understand up until that chapter?

If you listen to the podcast, you'd understand that they tried to come up with a name that would appeal to readers, and not sound completely foreign. It's been said quite a few times that a direct translation would be difficult.

Sounds a little awkward, but they tried. I doubt anyone in here would come up with anything better. Rofl.
